So the new teaser revealed something we thought was obliterated in ROTJ (and I'm not talking about Palpatine.) The Death Star! What could it's wreckage hold that our heroes will need? What planet is it on? That doesn't look like Endor to me! But remember Endor is a moon so could it be the planet that Endor orbits? So many questions...
I don't know. But in the TFA concept art book, part of the plot had them diving into the Death Star to find something.
I remember fondly that the original idea was Rey salvaging the wreckage of Death Star II in one of the earliest drafts of Episode VII. Instead of star destroyers, she dives in and salvages the wreckage of the Death Star II to find living resources.
Could it be the wreckage from the first death star? So might be Yavin (or a moon of) that's featured.
The grassland in the Ewok movie is a bit similar to what we've seen in the trailer and spy photos. Spoiler
That's what I'm speculating at the moment, and it would be a nice way to go back to somewhere that's somewhat familiar without it being exactly the same place.
Nice catch! That also looks similar to the grasslands where we see Finn, Poe and Jannah in those set pics.
I don't know, I kinda hope it is Endor. Seems weird to go to the DS2 wreckage and for it just not to be endor. Plus I kinda just wanna see a planet or two from the PT/OT somewhere in the ST anyway to make them feel a little more interconnected.
Didn't the Death Star run on Kyber Crystals? If the Resistance is in need of fuel, or Rey needs a new crystal...maybe that's a place to go? Seems far fetched, but just a thought.
I always assumed Kylo Ren would have combed the ruins of the Death Star for anything Sith related. He had Vader's mask in TFA. Didn't expect to see the DS but Abrams loves to engage in nostalgia.
When you see the matt paintings of the moon of Endor, it does seem to have savannas and small oceans, and the Ewok movies confirm grassland. The area where it was filmed (about 20 minutes from where I live), is grassland and woods. Behind Leia you see a redwood tree as well. My guess is its got to be Endor. Partly based on the facts above, party because JJ likes nostalgia and mirroring, and partly because we already know an early JJ concept was for the Emporor's archive on the Death Star to contain important information. A visit here also gives us a route in for a Sidious cameo, in the form of ghost or holo recording to fill out the saga back plot.
Chewie: Uughghhhgh wrrhwrwwhw huuguughghg aarrragghuuhw uughguughhhghghghhhgh. Lando: Back to En..... Why does everyone want to go back to Endor!!??
I think it's likely that this is Endor, but it could also be Yavin IV. We see a shot of presumably Leia holding one of the medals that was given to Han and Luke -- maybe the medal was left behind during the evacuation?
Oh JJ... of course you found a way to put a Death Star in this movie. That said, what a gorgeous shot... Feels appropriate to have the scavenger Rey explore the wreckage of a Death Star. Bookends with her TFA introduction nicely.
JJ seemed to say in the panel that this shot is from the beginning of the film, the "very beginning," and it looks like Endor which leads me to suspect that whatever they do at the Death Star II, it'll be wrapped up in the 1st act.
The sunken Death Star is a great idea, and I’m glad they’re revisiting it. All their ideas can be used, leaving nothing on the table. The sequel trilogy is all about the haunting legacy of the saga as a whole, so this fits perfectly.
I believe last 20-30 minutes of the movie would take place in that Wreckage. It seems like the Act 3 location. Also kinda reminds me Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince third act, with ocean and gian waves.
Maybe they find a hologram recording to show Kylo (in an effort to save him from the path he is on) that Vader turned good at the end...would probably get him to re-assess everything he thought up until this point. Would probably account for the ROTJ style Palpatine laugh without him being brought back from the dead. Although wouldn't Kylo know about Vaders redemption from Luke? I guess Snoke could have lied to him about all that... If it is Endor they mas as well show a couple of Ewoks...why not!
