    Hello, everyone.

I recently stumbled across a possible source of Anakin's name. George Lucas might have borrowed the name from a darts player.

The Wikipedia article states that there was kind of what we would perhaps call a lawsuit nowadays against one Jim Garside, who had been accused of allowing a "game of chance" in his Inn - a darts game was meant.

He defended himself with the help of one William 'Bigfoot' Anakin, who was the best darts player of the area, the article says. His name appears in other articles as "Foot Anakin".

This is the first real name containing "Anakin" I encountered. George Lucas might have borrowed this name from this famous darts player, but it is also possible that this name has been brought into America at a time as well.

You can read the whole article about darts here (including this incidend rather near the end) :

    Never heard that one before...

GL got the name of a film-making friend - Ken Annikan from what I recall.

Here's more wiki reference to it:

    Behind the scenes
In Sanskrit, the name "Anakin" means "warrior". Creator George Lucas took the name from his friend and fellow film director, Ken Annakin. The name may also be derived from the name "Anakim", found in the Old Testament. It is one of several names used to identify a race of giants "the sons of the gods [who] lay with the daughters of men' [Genesis 6:4]".
