    Hello, everyone.

Browsing through Wikipedia, I found something I consider at least interesting in regard to the symbolism of Queen Amidala (later senator) throughout the movies.

It is the "Amygdala" brain region. Actually, there's two of them. In every brain.

According to the article, they are strongly related to what is called there "emotional learning", especially learning with fear as an impulse for a certain memory (pattern).

And fear is ... strong in Anakin Skywalker. Fear to lose his mother, fear to lose his wife, then.

I just wonder whether the person responsible for Amidala's name knew that.

For a better understanding, I suggest the reading of this article. At least of the chapter "emotional learning".

Well, Lucas came up with the names of all the central characters, so he might've been aware of this. But according to Wookieepedia, "Padmé" is Sanskrit for "lotus flower," while "Amidala" is the spiritual manifestation. In Egyptian, the name "Nabirye" means "Mother of twins." Padmé's own surname, Naberrie, appears to be a homonym.

I think all of the mentioned suggestions above are possible. Lucas has used translations and word meanings for names in the past, so I think it's a possibility that Padme's name has a special meaning.

I was searching and searching ... but my thread seemed to be simply deleted ?

Now I just did a word search for the word "Amygdala" and found it - here !

Now, if I never ever had replied, you now know why. Actually, I felt kind of offended that my thread was deleted without a word.

Finding it at a different place doesn't make it much bettern, only more understandable.

By the way, as I see it, "padme" seems to have several other meanings as well.

Buck Rogers is a good idea, because it's of a similar timespan like e.g. Flash Gordon. Early Si-fi movies.

Amidala as I believe actually comes from Amitabha which means 'Buddha of boundless light'. IMHO this is more likely to be the derivation as Padme is derrived from padma which is Sanskrit for lotus and also Buddhist.

I don't think the amygdala association really works because as I understand, that region of the brain is primarily associated with animalistic, angry outbursts. Sounds more like Anakin than Padme there.

I think it means the *effect* Padme has on Anakin, Dark One :p

I think the explanation Sinister mentioned is probably the most likely. Lucas has borrowed words from other languages and civilizations before. If I'm not mistaken wasn't the name Tatooine inspired by a city in Tunisia or something like that? Also the Nubian generator that Qui-Gon goes out to find in TPM appears as if the name is borrowed from the Nubian Civilization that at one time conquered Egypt.
