I have a question regarding the design of the ships in the PT. Does anyone else think they made a mistake with the designs, with reference to the OT? Consider these:

    - Maul's ship should not have looked like a TIE fighter.
    - The evolution of the Jedi starfighter should not have tried to turn into into a TIE fighter. Rather, the clones should have flown some proto TIE fighter, instead of the ARC 170's. (The V-wing should have gotten more prominence)

But beyond my griping, I do love the design of the ships - my favourite ship of the entire Saga is the AOTC Jedi starfighter.

    Anyone agree?

There are some cool ass ships in the PT, and a helluva lot more of them, too. But, I feel they lack the inspiration that the OT ships posess. I mean, nothing in the PT comes close to the Falcon. I think one of the reasons is that the designers for the PT had to de-evolve the ship designs to figure out what they might have looked like before. It's easier the other way around.

I feel they had to use they had to use the starfighters as those that evolved into the tie fighters because it looked closer to Vaders model then anything and Im sure Vader recommended it.

Yeah Vader would presumably have influenced Imperial fighter design and thus the reason they evolved from his own Jedi Starfighter.

I agree about Maul's ship, but as I recall, the V-wing was supposed to be in the openning battle, but it was getting too cluttered, so while it makes the final cut in several Lucus Arts video games, it never actually shows up in the openning sequnce of the movie, probably for the better, after watching all the deleted scenes, it seems like the streamlined version of ROTS was the best choice

Yeah it's funny that it sounds like a TIE.

In retrospect I think it's pretty odd that Maul's ship is a giant tie fighter, when I first saw the movie I thought it was cool but now it's kind of silly.

I always imagined the clone wars being fought with x-wing type fighters and I thought the jedi starfighter looked to much like an A-Wing... or a mini star destroyer.

Either way I still love them.

Not as many icons, that's for sure.

    But I still love...

    - The podracers.
    - The Queen's chrome ship.
    - Everything owned by the Trade Federation.

It's all a matter of subjective interpretation, I suppose, but one could say that Lucas potentially dropped the ball by referencing future ships more than once. For example, Maul's Sith vessel looked like a cross between a TIE Fighter/Interceptor/Bomber and a Star Destroyer yet future Jedi vehicles individually resembled those designs (Obi Wan's ship in AOTC looked like a Star Destroyer and his and Anakin's ships in ROTS looked like TIE vessels). Why would an early Sith vessel and subsequent Jedi vessels BOTH evoke the same ships? It seems a bit messy and repetitive. Moreover, why would tiny fighter craft evoke a massive carrier ship like a Star Destroyer? The suggestion now is that the Venator and Star Destroyer ships are a homage to those earlier designs. It would seem more realistic if the Venators and Star Destroyers evolved from earlier large-vessel designs, would it not? I dunno. It all seems a bit rich for me.

How does Maul's ship look like a TIE fighter? Because it has little appendages on the wing-tips, like sideways T's? That's not much. My X-Terra has squre-ish fenders, but nobody has mistaken it for a Jeep. Heck, my '93 Escort had a spoiler, but I'm pretty sure no one mistook it for a Porche! Anyway I've not seen TPM in awhile so I'm probably not seeing what you folks are. As for the ROTS Jedi starfighters looking like TIE fighters, I like that and it makes perfect sense. The orginization that the Jedi are fighting for ultimately becomes the Empire, so why would'nt thay resemble each other?

A little off-topic here, but after watching all six films in a row the thing that's really noticeable is how the ships go from pretty big to off the charts! You can really tell in the sound in your sub-woofer. Episode I is so-so, but by the end of Episode II, when the first star destroyers are are taking off you can really feel it, then at the beginning of Episode IV when the star destroyer comes over head it's pretty loud and finally when we see the super star destroyer in Episode V your house has moved from the foundation! The sound really shows how the ships have evolved over the 40 years in the Star Wars universe...

    Try DEFINITELY not.

    A profile shot:

    A mockup using LEGO:

    [image=http://www.fbtb.net/customs/galleries/RetowarhawkGeiger/RetowarhawkGeiger91.jpg]

The rear end looks almost exactly like a TIE Bomber and the front end like a Star Destroyer. It's a very blatant reference that is then RE-REFERENCED using totally different ships in AOTC and ROTS.

My only problem with any PT ships (and I'm usually a PT basher) is Padme's chrome ship from TPM--it was really lazy design as it is just a real-world, 20th century Lockeed Skunkworks SR-71 "Blackbird" spy plane painted chrome instead of black minus the two vertical stabilizer tail fins--Star Wars ships shouldn't be ripped off directly from real 1960s/70s US military designs. As for the Starfighters, the RotS Jedi starfighter is the best fighter in all the movies, and I love how it connects Maul's ship with OT Tie's and Vader's tricked out tie. I might have prefered if the clones flew actual X-wings instead of the asterix wings, but that stead, I still liked the family resemblence.

I don't have any problem with the looks of these ships. At first, all of my fan friends said "Why are they slick, sheek, shiney and such while the OT are rougher and more industrial somehow"

I would tell them that in the PT, there hasn't been decades of war. You trade the refined technology for what works.

As far as the republic air force trading up for the TIE's, I always thought that the TIE's were cheaper to produce and you could just crap them out and fill em with clones. They lacked hyperdrives and any missles/torpedoes and wanted numbers opposed to quality. I'm sure Vader had a hand in picking the manufacturer having experience in one. I don't know why, though, he would pick the advanced from ANH over his Jedi starfighter from ROTS?

to answer the arc-170 dilema, the clones flying them
is that the x-wing was originally an imperial desighn but the desighner defected to the rebel alliance and tooks his plans and prototypes with him, that's why the clones fly its predecessor in ep 3

I think the ARC-170 databank entry talks about this. The ARC-170 was designed by Incom, which built the famed X-Wing. When they saw the direction the Republic was headed in, they took the X-wing plans and a couple of prototypes and ran, eventually delivering them into the hands of the Alliance.

I'm a big fan of the Naboo Starfighters. They look the way I always imagined the prequels would be: elegant, sleek, shiny, form-over-function, etc. I thought the Droid Starfighters were kind of boring, but I loved the Droid Tri-fighters in ROTS. I also was unimpressed with the Jedi Starfighter from AOTC, but in ROTS, they became much cooler! And, of course, the ARC-170 looks and sounds great. Heck, I even thought the Solar Sailer was pretty cool.
