Well, I for one recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in nanotechnology, even if you don't it is a GREAT novel. I got it two nights ago and already I am half way done with it and reading like a madman.

For those of you who dont know what Prey is about this is what the back of it says. In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles-micro robots- has escaped from the laboratory. This could is self-sustaining and self-reprouducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.

It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming mroe deadly with each passing hour.

Every attempt to destroy it has failed

    We are the prey.

So has anyone else read it? Feel free to discuss.

I read it. I liked the book's CONCEPT and the book's ACTION, but every single character sucked IMO. There wasn't a single likeable character (EXCEPT for maybe the narrator, but only at the very, very end). Everyone else was either a jerk, a moron, a wimp, or some other undesireable trait.

I liked it, but something just seemed off to me... like, the ending was just too much, for some reasomn I couldn't see it coming. Which is sometimes a good thing, but here it just made it seem like it was kind of tacked on.

Overall, it was a fun read, though.

I enjoyed the book, read it in a day, but it was a bit too much like Jurassic Park in many ways. It was kind of distracting, as well as the main character, who was pretty lost for lots of parts. The plot was interesting, idea was interesting, but this wasn't Crichton's best work in a long run.

Yes, I will say it does remind me of Jurassic Park, the whole predator thing, But I still like it. I haven't finished it yet so I guess I can not give my final opinion. I just find bio-engineering very interesting.

It was alright - I read it several months ago. Not Crichton's best work, but it kept my interest.

Yep, the movie rights were sold before the book hit the shelves.

I heard that as of Timeline, the next 3 or 4 books he wrote (Timeline, Prey, and the 2 after that) would definately be turned into movies, and the rights were already sold.
I don't remember where I read that, so maybe I'm just nuts, I dunno.

Every Crichton movie is a box office hit, so they're all basically guaranteed to be made into movies. The only fiction book not yet made into a movie is Airframe, but that probably wouldn't made a good movie. Too slow, and no killer techology.

They may be a hit all of them, but they still can't do one right.

"Prey" would not make a great movie - the book was interesting, but I wouldn't pay to see the film. It wasn't THAT good.

The only Crichton movie I've seen based on any of his books was "Jurrasic Park", and that was only because of the effects. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie, which was great - it did, for the most part, follow the book (with the exception of things they had to take out because of time limitations).

Just for an example, "Congo" was an excellent book, but I've heard nothing but bad things about the film. Same with "Sphere". Reading these books is enough for me.

It would be more of an action movie I think, and given the amount of those int the world, i can easily see it being one.

I thought it was a pretty good book, though personally I liked some of his other stuff better like Timeline and Jurassic Park.
I haven't read it since Christmas though so my memory might be a bit blurry on it and all. ;) I thought what happened to hsi wife, Julia wasn't it, was kinda sad, but I thought it was good that part of her did manage to survive and do the right thing even though she couldn't fulyl regain control and all.

I liked the movie version of 'Jurassic Park' and 'Sphere', personally.

I heard that Sphere sucked. I loved the book though.

The movie wasn't as good as the book as it was WAY too rushed. Oddly though, when I read the book in 94 I thought Sam Jackson was a natural choice to play Harry in a film adaption, and 2 years later they did just that. Needless to say, I was happy.

Yeah, when I read the book, I totally thought Dustin Hoffman should play the main character (who's name eludes me...), and guess what, he did. :)
