Sorry if this has been discussed -- I couldn't find it.

Has anyone heard any buzz on the upcoming sequel Punisher: War Zone? New director, new actor playing Frank Castle. Sounds like it's based on the original Garth Ennis story.

I've still not seen the original (which, by the way, when I do: theatrical or extended?), but I'm mildly interested in doing so, as I'm generally a sucker for comic book movies. Any word on this sequel?

The Extended version is a mild improvement over the theatrical, but mainly fleshes out a couple supporting characters, so it doesn't add that much, though it reveals who was responsible for informing the Saints' about who Castle was, which leads to a rather good scene. However, there could be a sense of a slight drop in pacing due to the added footage.

It's a shame Thomas Jane had to leave the sequel due to creative differences- he really was hardcore involved with the character.

I wonder if they'll be filming in Tampa again. I'd love to be an extra.

Pretty certain they're moving it to New York or another more grittier environment.

Ever since Thomas Jane left the project, this movie has had Direct-to-Video written all over it. And in a year with Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, Hellboy, Indy, and Speed, I doubt it will do well in the box office.

How can you put speed racer in that group ? it looks like the power rangers on acid. The only good thing about the movie is Christina Ricci.
Hopefully that's what your reffering to anyways :)

Bump- thought we had another thread from when the first teaser trailer went up around Iron Man or Hulk's release, but oh well. IGN has the ComicCon promo footage up

Nice and violent. Anyone know the song used in that? The soundtrack for the first movie was one of the better ones I've ever heard, and this would fit at home nicely on that.

The bad gets worse: The movie will be rated PG-13 instead of R to attract a broader audience; Director Lexi Alexander, who wanted more violence, apparently was fired. [face_plain]

Ah. That's not good... I wonder if we'll get any SHIELD references, however, as all Marvel films seem to be wandering that way.

Nah. The Punisher movies aren't "in-house" productions; they're not part of the shared universe that the Avengers films are in.

That sucks- the extra violence and action was about the only thing the movie had going for it after Thomas Jane left.

Well that's good news...I guess. I'm still very apprehensive about this movie. I really enjoyed Thomas Jane in the last one. However, from what I've seen of the trailer, Ray Stevenson seems to channel Garth Ennis' Punisher more. Which is a very good thing.

The trailer looked kind of silly to me. Didn't really seem very menacing, looked more... silly.

Hopefully, I'm wrong. I wants me a good bloody nasty Punisher movie.

The latest TV spot for PWZ uses the Marvel Knights logo- looks like they're trying to distinguish non Marvel Studio productions perhaps?

Well, I caught this earlier tonight. And..it's rather bad. Not as bad as Ghost Rider, but it's bad.

First off- Ray Steveson is very good as Frank- he's the merciless, psychotic will-shoot-a-criminal-for-being-in-the-room Punisher from the comics. He'd fit in very well if Frank was to make a cameo appearance in a Marvel Universe movie. But I'd much rather have a Thomas Jane sequel instead.

The violence and action delivers too- the acrobat rocket kill was flippin fantastic, no pun intended. generally, any scenes focusing on Frank and not the villians were quite passable, actually.

It's the villians, mostly, where the movie is at it's worst. The movie feels like it's a comic book movie made in the 90's by a Paul Verhoven fan. Sure, it has R-rated violence aplenty, but the bad guys are all silly and over the top, both in demeanor, delivery and accent, with yet another bad Nicholson-Joker rip-off attempt. What the hell was up with that walk?!

I also didn't like how they changed up his movie origin- sure, it's a different Punisher, but it was all of two lines of dialogue that didn't need to be in there. There was no reason to disconnect this movie from the previous and just left it as a vague psuedo-sequel.

It's a shame- this could have been half-decent if they had completely redone the Jogsaw/villain scenes and played them straight more, though it still wouldn't have been as good as the Tom Jane one.

If I recall it went from pseudo sequel to restart, ala the Incredible Hulk.

Anyways, this movie has some of the worst acting I've ever seen in a film outside of certain horror films.

I can't say much good about it, but here are the good things. It looked like the comic, the colors, the way it was filmed. Every frame looked like Tim Bradstreet had drawn it. Also, it felt a lot like a Garth Ennis comic, but the problem with that is, his comics are written so over the top, it's hard to take serious on screen. So while I respect the films ability to try to keep the vibe that's gotten the Punisher famous again in the last decade, it just can't work.

Other problem I have, if you're going to go back to the real Punisher origin, why not use Jigsaw like he was used in the comics. Make him a pretty boy assassin, that was hired to take out the Punisher. The other surviving mob members and Jigsaws brother were terrible characters...

Just... don't see it. Or at least go see it for a good laugh.

"Sometimes I wish I could get my hands on God..." lol
