Now after 5 films and seeing the personalities of Anakin and Padme more clearly, makes me appreciate more the Luke and Leia characters.

My question to all is what personality traits and impulses that both Luke and Leia obviously inherited from their parents?

    Here is my take:

Luke looks like his father but personality wise is almost all like his mother, his sense of duty, not too emotional (in the sense that both Luke and Padme dont show their emotions unless pressed it seems), have a sense of honor and he also have pacifist like qualities and also have a tendency to brood or even be depressed or sad at times are clearly like Padme, he has just a little of his fathers traits also, his sense of adventure, a little reckless nature and a fierce loyalty and attachment to the people he loves, is just like his father. But to me clearly Luke is the male version of Padme.

Leia on the other hand, looks like Padme, but personality wise, she is very much like her father, she wears her emotions on her sleeve, if she is angry, sad, happy, whatever you will see it, just like with Anakin, also has the same saracastic like humor, and also speaks very directly and to the point with people, not afraid of letting her opinions known even if it may cause disagreements or arguments just like Anakin and she is also fiercely loyal to the people she loves.
She is like her mother in that she also is one who is bound by duty, she is very heavily into the political scene of galatic affairs just like Padme. But overall in my opinion, Leia is clearly the female version of Anakin.

I think both of the twins have that inner strength of their mother which allows them to cope and deal with situations as they happen (which is one of the things that Anakin admired so much about Padme, when Hayden was talking about the love story between them in his commentary on the AOTC Dvd) and this I think is what keeps them from turning to the dark side in my opinion.

Both of the twins inherited the best qualities from both their parents and I wonder how it would have been if they had been raised by Anakin and Padme, what that would have been like?

What are your opinions on this topic?

I totally agree, this is the way I've thought it works out, too.

I would suggest that Luke has also got more than a touch of his father's impulsiveness and anger (though it is buried pretty deep).

Yeah, and both kids got the Force from their fathers side. ;)

Also, Luke inherited his skill as a pilot from Anakin, and Leia inherited Padmes accuracy with a pistol. :p

I find it odd to think that either one of them would have inherited any personality traits from either parent. Personality traits are something you pick up from people you spend a great deal of time with, and considering the twins spent little to no time with their real parents, I find it unlikely that they would have much in the way of their parents' personalities. Leia would have more in common with Bail and Luke with Owen and Beru than either would have with Padme and Anakin. In practice, anyway.

Well, obviously the twins got their piloting skills from their father (even Leia- remember her ride from ROTJ), Leia is as effective with a blaster as her mother was... and her diplomatic skills has the same source, of course... I think Luke's personality is a fine mix of his mother and Shmi Skywalker. Yes, I agree, Leia is her father's daughter :D

More interesting I think the leadership abilities- it's not the same thing to lead smaller groups or squadrons or an entire fleet, and it's also different ability to be a leader in peace or in wartime situation. Leia is a natural leader- she got the best from both of her parents. She is great while commanding the Rebel troops in the desperate situation in ESB (she is a symbol like her father). While we can see no indication that Luke ever wants to be more than a squadron leader. Leadership styles are also different-there are two main types: democratic and autocratic leadership. Luke clearly uses the democratic version - just like his mother. While, Leia, who in OT was supposed to be a great democratic leader, is quite obviously her father's daughter (SHE decides what to do, when to do, how to do- never asks anyone's opinion :D and she is effective, we must admit :) )

I agree with you DamonD that Luke does have those qualities of hot anger and recklessness in him, it is deep inside though and for the most part under his control and it takes someone or something to really upset him to make that latent anger boil over (ie when Darth Vader says to him when he was looking for him in the last stages of their duel in ROTJ, when he learns that Luke has a twin sister that maybe she will turn to the dark side of the force if he doesnt and also when he saw Obi-Wan fall to Vader in ANH, there he showed his fiery anger) otherwise I think he is a pretty mellow, laid back, gentle type of person, like Padme. I think it takes something really major to get Luke angry like Anakin does (as shown in AOTC and of course upcoming in EP III), while with Leia, I think she can get pretty angry much more easily though she has much more CONTROL over it than her father does.

And also in ROTJ when Luke confronts the Emperor for the 1st time face to face and then the way he deals with him in talking, that in my opinion is clearly like how his mother would have done, I wonder if the Emporer had flashbacks to her when hearing Luke speak to him, like oh no not this again type of thing.

And youre right on the money Lady Z on Leia, when she decides to do something, she does it, and there are no asking on opinions, she does it because she deicides to, (in AHN for example when Luke, Leia and Han first meet after they take her out of captivity and are persued by Stromtroopers, she felt she had enough of the standstill shooting between them and took Im not sure but I think Luke's pistol and blast a hole on the side and very much say someone had to DO something to save them and I think told them to go inside that hole) that is one trait that Leia also obviously got from her father.
