When Hockey players are fighting and one guy pulls the others jersey over his head, is it to shame them or allow them to beat the crap out of the other player while he can't see?

it could be for both, but it's more about to shame them. Taking a jersey from the other guy is a honor.

That doesn't happen anymore. There are special pieces of equipment in the back of hockey pants now that prevent it. If it does happen, the player will get ejected from the game and also, a fine.

Well, it's illegal in the NHL. Yes, you will get the boot for that. The leagues head honchos felt that it can promote serious injury as it incapacitates the other player, so they mandated a special holder suspender that is supposed to hold the jersey in place. Any follower of hockey would know that, guy.

Hockey video games with fighting rule. Especially Blades of Steel, because the loser would go to the penalty box. So very, very brilliant.

    Amazing.

The AHL has the same rules about sweaters as the NHL

it has nothing to do with shaming someone, it's just easier to punch somebody when they can't see anything.

What does that mean? If you saw someone get his jersey pulled over his head it's because the player didn't tie his jersey down. That happens in the NHL sometimes as well.

also, if a player has his jersey pulled up on him, his arms are tied up in it, and he can't punch. That's why McCarty started to wail on that Blues player after his jersey was stripped off.

    :D

If you saw someone get his jersey pulled over his head it's because the player didn't tie his jersey down

not always...sometimes even with the suspender-thingies, they still get pulled up.

Rules are rules, chief. It doesn't change from league to league. I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you're not paying close enough attention.

Blades of Steel was awesome, but remember the old school Nintendo hockey game where you made a squad by picking from lankies (fast but week), mediums (name says it all) and fatsos (strong but slow). I wasted hours on that game . . .

Ah, Ice Hockey. It's hard to surpass the satisfaction of one of the skinny guys beating one of the fat guys in a fight.

    Amazing.

Having played hockey for 12 years, I can tell you pulling a jersey over your opponent's head gives you a huge advantagein a fight. So much so, that there's a snap-on strap inside on the lower back part of the jersey that's supposed to keep that from happening. Your arms get pinned down and you can't defend your face. Sometimes the jerseys come off, but that usually happens to both players.

There's still nothing quite like a hockey fight to get all the fans out of their seats. Gotta love em!

I used to play ice hockey. kickerofelves and nashira are correct. By pulling your opponent?s jersey (and his shoulder pads too ? if you can get them) over his head, you're attemtping to tie up and control your opponent, so that he can?t get any solid punches off. Although having your opponent?s jersey blocking his vision is advantageous (as it can be disorientating), it is usually only transitory. ;)

From Rule 56 of the NHL Rulebook:

A player who deliberately removes his sweater prior to participating in an altercation or who is clearly wearing a sweater that has been modified and does not conform to Rule 24A - Players' Jerseys shall be assessed a minor penalty for Unsportsmanlike Conduct and a game misconduct. This is in addition to other penalties to be assessed to the participants of an altercation.

A player who engages in fisticuffs and whose sweater is removed (completely off his torso), other than through the actions of his opponent in the altercation or through the actions of the Linesman, shall be assessed a game misconduct penalty.

A player who engages in fisticuffs and whose sweater is not properly "tied-down" (sweater properly fastened to pants), and who loses his sweater (completely off his torso) in that altercation, shall receive a game misconduct.

A player who is involved in an altercation, when the opponent has been identified as an instigator, shall not be assessed a game misconduct if his sweater should be removed by an opponent or an Official in the discharge of his duties.
