    I need help for my fanfic. I've paired up a male human and a female Twi'lek and I need help on what their offspring would look like. Or should they even have offspring? Help! Thank you.

    I would have thought they were incompatible.

    Okay, this is speaking in purely technical terms, so I hope I don't get in trouble. 8-}

    All right, what do we know about Twi'leks? Are they mammals? Because if they are (or if you want to say they are), they could be compatible. All male mammals have a penis or a similar organ. All female mammals have a uterus and an opening similar to a vagina. As disgusting as this sounds, it would be like a human, erm, mating if you will, with another non-human mammal. Now, it is possible for Twi'leks to be mammals simply because of the presence of breasts on the females. No other classification of organisms displays mammary glands or breasts. So, if the similar parts are present, then by all means, they are compatible. I'm not saying that a female Twi'lek would have the same parts in the same places, but it would be possible for intercourse to be performed between Twi'leks & Humans.

    Now, onto the actual offspring itself. If you want to stick to our science, you would render the child sterile. This Human/Twi'lek would be considered a hybrid of the parents' species and therefore, like the mule (from horses and donkeys, I believe), would be unable to bear its own offspring. Or you could just cheat science and say that it can have babies, just like I did 8-}. It's all really up to you.

    As for the look of the child, just list the major physical characteristics of Twi'leks & Humans. And try drawing it or have someone draw the child as you dictate it. Think of combinations like having hair and lekku. I, personally, would include the lekku on the child because it is the most noticeable trait of a Twi'lek. Perhaps pale, brown, or black skin opposed to the blues, greens, whites, and reds of the Twi'leks? My main advice for visualizing the offspring is just to draw it. And draw several different versions. It shouldn't be too hard to pick out your favorite from there.

    Whew. *wipes brow* That was a long post! Hope it helped! :D

    That makes sense. It's a common thing in science fiction for two people of different species to be able to have children, although, sometimes with some medical intervention. And while it's perhaps not technically possible for the offspring to have children, it is fiction. :)

    My first thought was that the child could have shorter lekku and human textured (?) skin. Twi'leks also have different eyes, I think, like the pupils and irises are bigger... you might want to check that.

    Don't do it! It's overused in Star Trek and I hate it when they do that. It's biologically impossible (almost) and the only real life animals that can hybridise and produce fertile offspring are species of the genus Canis (dogs, wolves, jackals) domestic cats and the European Wildcat and a few other rareities. It only occurs between species that are very closely related and even then it is very rare. You can't expect species that have evoled on two totally different plants to be able to produce even infertile offspring, not to mention fertile one. I'd avoid hybrids all together and go for adoption.

    I'd go for adoption too....or make them unable to have children (could be a good point of angst and contention) as their kids wouldn't be viable or would probably die in utero (sp - I'm having a bad spelling night).

    I mean it is fiction, so you can do whatever you like...but fiction also needs certain boundaries too.

    That's interesting, emimar, I hadn't heard about that. In high school biology we were taught that two animals that could mate and produce fertile offspring were of the same species. It seems it's not as clear cut as that.

    I think with medical intervention it might be possible, using genetic engineering and all that sort of thing. But I don't know if it would be allowed. Firstly, racism is a theme in SW, and secondly, it might be dangerous to splice together some genes like that.

    Seems I've changed my mind. It's up to you of course, it's just important to make it believable. :)

    I know humans can sleep with Twi'leks (Nawara and Rhysati) and Sienn'ra offered Wedge a night of passion in Krytos Trap, and let's not forget Alema Rar whose tried to sleep with everyone she can get her hands on. But none of them resulted in kiddies ;)

    But still *sniff* I was trying to help. And Kit said the same thing.

    Still, I am da man! :D

    I just have an interest in natural history and my favourite animals just happen to be wolves and dogs, so I know quite a bit about them.

    Someone who has read the Wraith novels more recently than me will probably correct me, but I think I remember it was mentioned that Face and Dia (human man, Twi'lek woman) couldn't have biological children.
