My apologies if this topic has been discussed previously.

While I was watching the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones together (something I cannot do again - two movies in a row with no break is too tiring for me,) I noticed something I had previously missed. Qui-Gon most likely knew that Padme was the Queen. For proof, first look at the scenes between her and Qui-Gon on Tatooine. It's especially obvious when, at the pod race, Qui-Gon responds to Padme's assertion that the "Jedi are far too reckless." He has a look on his face that gives it away. Lucas isn't beyond using visual hints, mind you. It?s implied that Qui-Gon knows and he even indulges in playing with her to an extent ? he knows she?s powerless to reveal herself and assert her regal authority. And now, some more definite proof - when Padme finally reveals herself, Qui-Gon, instead of looking shocked, just looks at Obi-Wan and watches his reaction instead. Did anyone else figure this out? It took me about five watchings to realize it, so don't be shy to admit you didn't pick up on it.

I?m confident enough in this assertion to bet on it ? NOT that I?m challenging anyone. :) Really, though, Lucas knew what he was doing while directing these films, and if you pay special attention to the little details, you?ll be rewarded.

I agree--he definitely did know that Padme was really the queen. That's why he threw in little lines like "The Queen doesn't need to know" to make her mad. Oh yes, he knew the whole time.

All the movies have a twist like that...

    TPM: Padme = Queen
    AOTC: Dooku = Tyrannus
    EpIII: (probably Palpatine = Sidious)
    ANH: Ben = Obi-Wan
ESB: Darth Vader = Anakin Skywalker
    ROTJ: Leia = Luke's sister.

I always suspected Qui-Gon knew. My suspicions were confirmed when Lucas said so on the dvd commentary.

Ah! I haven't watched the commentary yet, but it's nice to know my thoughts were correct.

I figured Qui-Gon knew as well due to the look he gave Obi-Wan when Padme revealed herself.

Yeah, the commentary is a very good one and worth watching when you get a chance. Its got plenty of neat details and facts about the movie.

I also liked how Qui-Gon played with Padme a little bit: "No more commands from the Queen today." "The Queen doesn't need to know." "The Queen trusts my judgement, young handmaiden, you should too." Not to mention the smart-alek looks and smiles he gives her.

jedi_master_ousley as always a great informative post, that only adds to the thread. Now how about this.
    ROTJ: Leia = Luke's sister. or Emperor=Sith.

Now I will try to do you one better for epiii. W/ the exception of the Padme = Queen, the revelation of identity has both changed the story, and how we look at the characters. I think Padme = Queen was used simply to keep the theme of the ct. How about this for identity revelation:

I've always thought Qui-Gon knew. Qui-Gon is pretty smart--that's how he recognized Anakin's potential when no one else did. I think the reason he didn't want Padme coming with him and Jar-Jar into Mos Espa is because he knew who she was, and yes, he does toy with her to piss her off (something I found hilarious, even though I like Padme). I am kind of surprised Obi-Wan didn't figure it out sooner though, having been on the ship with Sabe for a couple of days.

He knew, hence the "I told you so" look to Obi-Wan when Padmé revealed herself.

It was pretty obvious to me. I loved how he kept making little remarks like, "Well, the Queen trusts me." And then winking at her.

Hehehehehe...I mean, c'mon, the guy's a Jedi Master. He's not gonna be fooled by a fourteen year old girl handmaiden/monarch.

Althougth I read it a while ago when I read TPM screen play after padme reveals she is the queen it says Qui-GOn and Obi-Wan give each other a knowing look, so it is possible they both new. Both being jedi i'm not surprised.

Yes, Padme is going along for the adventure. It's kind of like her "Roman Holiday"... you know the movie where the princess leaves the monarchy for a day so that she can see what "real life" is all about. Only she is the only one who knows her true identity.

I would have to gree that even without watching the DVD with the commentary it is pretty obvious that Qui-Gon knows that she is the Queen.

i love how GL/the music ppl give a little hint (if thats what youd call it) when padme says "well I dont approve" theres a little *ping* that i think is supposed to draw the viewers attention to the little exchange between Qui Gon and Padme...like, 'hey, look what he said, and look what she said in response! theres something going on'

    or am i totally crazy

I think it's obvious that Qui-Gon knew, but what about Obi-Wan? You guys think he didn't? I don't recall the commentary, but personally I thought he kind of gave Qui-Gon a look of a shared secret being exposed than anything. I find it highly unlikely that he would not have known, being a fairly skilled Jedi.

At the very least, Qui-Gon suspected it. When Padme finally revealed her true identity before Boss Nass, Qui-Gon seemed to share a "See? What did I tell you?" look with Obi-Wan.

I didn't get the impression that Obi-wan knew. When the secret was revealed I thought he had a kind of "What the hell?" look on his face. But yeah, Qui-Gon knew, no question.

    I agree, F_T.
    And I love Padme's grumpy "Well, I don't approve!" :D

Huh, I find it odd to be the only person who thought Obi-Wan knew. I didn't think he looked surprised, because he just kind of smirks and shares the look with Qui-Gon. I mean, how could he *not* know?
