    Here

    I was searching some news sites about China and came across this which automatically made me wonder if this was the origin of Qui-Gon's name. Of course, Qigong would be pronounced more like chi-koong in Chinese but it may have been the spelling that attracted Lucas when developing the character.

    Qi or chi can be translated as "life energy" or the Force and Qigong refers to how the Force would be used in one's body. Coupled with his surname "Jinn" which is described as "a fiery creature with free will" makes it very interesting.

    It's a nice match with his character isn't it.

    That's pretty cool considering Qui Gon was all about the natural force and he had his own way of thinking and acting.

    According to DICTIONARY.COM , JINN is defined as follows:

    "any of a class of spirits, lower than the angels, capable of appearing in human and animal forms and influencing humankind for either good or evil."

    The word is Arabic in nature, and is the root of our familiar "Genie," Anglicized from "Jinni of the famous "The Thousand and One Nights."

    Yes, but the idea here is about his first name, not his second

    This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the name "Qui-Gon" before TPM came out. In fact, I had assumed that his name would be pronounced "Chee Gon".

    The Jinn thing is also very interesting in light of his Force ghost storyline.

    I think that sounds about right. I know that they took Dooku from Japanese because it means poison hence Dooku/the Seperatists were the poison trying to eat away at the Republic.

    Japanese

    Obi= belt
    Kenobi= sword belt

    Wan is also something that's put on the end of a lot of Japanese words but I don't know what it means

    I always thought it was kind of cool that an oniwaban, which sounds a lot like Obi-Wan, was a secret agent (ninja) under the employ of the Shogun, who specialized in investigation and intelligence gathering, much like Kenobi did in AOTC.

    Didn't know that about ninja, but Jedi are more samurai than ninja

    Only visually. They're more like sohei, warrior monks that dabbled in politics. Guys like Tarkin and Veers were like samurai - harsh and merciless landowners who ruled with military force. I guess that would make Vader and Sidious the Shogun and the Emperor, respectively. You could say that Vader was sort of like the conqueror Nobunaga, who hated the monastic military orders, and wiped them out, sending them into exile.

    What about ronin? I always liked that word, there should be a Jedi named that.

    A Jedi named Rho-N'ynn would be a cool homage.
