Ok, me and SilentJediWriter have a problem.

We need to know how old Qui-Gon was when he died. We have found so much conflicting stuff, that no matter how we do the math, it never works.

If Qui-Gon had three apprentices, how old was he? He couldn't have been 45.

    Anyone know?

I personally thought he was in his fifty's or sixties...but I'm not sure.

Think about it though. It takes about 14 years or so to train a padawan right?

Say he was 26 (as a random age) when he first was knighted. Same year he takes a padawan.

When his first padawan becomes a knight is is now: 40.

Next year he takes Xanatos. Xani is like 20 odd (someone correct me if I am wrong) when he leaves the order. So Qui-gon is...48.

Now there is a discernable distance between when Xani leaves and when he takes Obi-wan. Lets make this 5 years (probably too short, but I don't really know).

So when Qui takes Obi-wan he is 53. When Qui-gon dies Obi-wan is something like 24. However Qui-gon took Obi-wan when the boy was 13 (rather then the 12 that I've been basing the other padawan's off). So now 11 years later...makes Qui-gon 64.

There you go. Qui-gon is about 64'ish when he dies. If someone has a more reliable source then my poor mathematics, could they please correct me. I've found this a topic I have often wondered about too!

I think the offical age for him is sixty.

Also, Qui-gon trained his first apprentice for five years.

It does say in the TPM novel that Qui-Gon was 'approching sixty' so I'd say that he was about 59 when he died.

About the novel saying that his Master was 300-400 years old...

I don't know what information u guys got but when TPM was first released, it was established that Yoda was Qui-Gon's Master.

    Correct me if I'm wrong

I've never seen anything about Qui-Gon being Yoda's padawan from official sources, although it does say in the Jedi Apprentice novels that Yoda was Qui-Gon's 'favorite' master to visit at the temple, possibly more akin to a favorite teacher than his actual mentor.

As for Qui-Gon's age, I have read that he was supposed to be in his sixties or older when they were developing the film. Supposedly Liam Neeson objected to his character being that old when he read over the action scenes required. If I remember correctly, they decided to 'play' him younger, but sixty is the only hard number I've seen for his age, so I'd agree with the assessment that guesses he's sixty-four or so. If he seems a little young, I say blame the Living Force (a.k.a. Hollywood).

Btw-- where is Qui-Gon's first padawan officially described?

<< Wow, he looked real good for his age!!! Unlike Obi Wan who aged really bad! >>

Well he was responsible for the death of countless Jedi and the enslavement of the entire galaxy. That's gotta give you at least a few gray hairs and wrinkles :p

    Thanks for the help guys!!!

I'd say it was dealing with Owen Lars that really aged Obi Wan! :p

If Qui Gon had him to contend with than instead of looking as good as Lian Nieson he'd have looked like a wrinkled prune, too! [face_mischief]

    No.

It was Anakin. What with his attraction to Padmé and all... :D

Alli-Wan - I'd thought Xanatos was Qui-Gon's first Padawan until I read in a SW trivia calendar that he'd had a previous apprentice. The EU entry for Qui-Gon in the official site Databank mentions that 'Qui-Gon obsessed over his failure for years, dismissing his earlier successes as a teacher and often referring to Xanatos as his "first" apprentice', but doesn't say anything else. That's all I know, sorry.

In the "Making of Episode I" book is stated that they originally wanted someone older and American for Qui-Gon. But Liam Neeson seemed perfect for the role, despite being much younger (45, plus-minus 2 years) and Irish. And I'm not surprised, he was really a good choice for Qui-Gon.

Now, why did 60-year-old Qui-Gon look younger than 57-year-old Obi-Wan? (let's put aside the fact that Liam was 40-something and Alec was around 60 when they filmed the said movies) Qui-Gon was in excellent shape, a Jedi in his prime. By the time of ANH, Obi-Wan had been hiding on Tatooine for cca 20 years. He didn't practice the use of the Force, he didn't practice his saber skills, and the rough environment of Tatooine makes you look older. And he had suffered much psychically (with Anakin turning to the Dark Side and all). That all combined made him look older and weaker.
