I'm surprised I didn't notice this until now, but this is said by both Anakin and Vader during the movie.

On the Invisible Hand R2 is ejected out of Anakin's ship and tries to follow Anakin and Obi-Wan. Anakin orders, in a tone that overly emphasises friendship, "R2, I need you to stay with the ship."

On Mustafar, R2 ejects from the ship for the second time in the movie and Anakin again says "R2, stay with the ship." This time in a much colder tone.

On a slightly related note, in the Mustafar scene R2 seems worried, as if he senses Anakin has changed. After "the duel" Obi-Wan returns to Padme's ship, and R2 instinctively follows him, as if he has already accepted Anakin is gone.

Yeah, R2 knew something was up. When Anakin went to see Padme before going to Mustafar R2 we see R2 telling 3PO that something is up with him; thus the "Well he is under a lot of pressure" line.

Anakin tries to act like he was the same person, but he just switched sides. The darkside changed him though as we can see from these exchanges.

R2 knew something was wrong. why? he's R2.

it did bug me at first. the first time he said it, it was like he was requesting it, as he would a friend. and when vader said it, it was like "stay here or die", like he was just a machine, nothing else.

Another interesting thing is how they changed his voice slightly:

The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, final online chapter, page 34-35:

"I have brought peace, freedom, justice and security to my new empire" is the next line. Christensen would like to redo the pitch of his voice for this whole scene, but Lucas is skeptical.
"Can we hear it?" Hayden asks.
"We can watch it," Lucas says, and they do. "Well, I can repitch it," he notes. "I can make it a tad lower."
"Yeah, that can be done," Wood says.
"Okay, please don't forget," Hayden asks Lucas.
    "I won't forget, don't worry."

I don't know if they did it for the scene we're talking about, but it's still cool :)

    Hayden is devoted

R2 was also kinda worried in that scene because he was on a hostile world and there were two giant Mustafarians standing behind him. ;)

Seriously, what kind of help is an astro droid out in the field? You'd want R2 to stay with the ship and keep it warm just in case you need a quick EVAC.

    A. he's anakin/vader, he doesn't NEED evac.

    B. R2 has proven his worth in the field time and time again. naboo, geonosis, coruscant. i, for one, would have taken him with me.

If Anakin had taken R2 with him. Do you think R2 might have tried and stop him from killing all the Seperatist Leaders??

R2 could report back to Padme. Anakin doesn't want her knowing what's about to happen.

In away I almost feel that a small part of Anakin was there when he said that line. And that really he just wanted R2 to stay because he knew that he coudl pick the ship or anything else safe. I mean really you don't want to mess with R2.

But I do agree that is was kind of cold when he said it that time.

R2 is just...really cool for one.

    He knows, he always knows.

R2 knew all though the OT about Anakin and Luke, and Leia. everthing.

He coulf "sence" the change in Anakin, he always seems to try his best to get to know his knew master. Like with Luke in ANH he pesters him, probably to see if his anger level is the same as his fathers.

I remember, in ANH when R2 is in line with the jawas at the lars homestead, he turns his dome slowly in Owens direction with a look (for a droid) thats almost like..."It has begun."

Anywho!...kinda veered off the subject a little!

Yeah the point is his attitude was rough with R2 now. He was a changed person. It was more of a "Do my bidding, droid" as opposed to in the space battle where he said "Yeah! You got 'em R2".

    And thanks Jedi Priestess

R2 was definately worried, you could tell by his beeps (ha, did I just say that). His personality shows through, he's scared of what Anakin is going to do, but it's his master and friend so he listens to him. Notice how in AOTC, he completely ignores the orders to "stay with the ship" on Geonosis, and saves Padme's life. In ROTS, he listens to what Anakin tells him.

Also, in a cut scene, 3PO and R2 drage Padme's body back into the ship. This would be impossible for C-3PO to do alone because, well, he's retarded.

EVAC and R2 proving himself in the field? It's like I accidentally stumbled onto a veterens website or something :p

Or maybe everyone just plays more Halo than me.

    1. He didn't want the droid to see or record this.
    2. He didn't want to be responsible for him if he got hurt while he was cleaning house.

Anakin telling R2 to stay with the ship on Mustafar pulled my emotions the first time I saw RotS....

Not because I thought Anakin was being "mean" to R2 (although I agree he sounded cold), but because I think Anakin didn't want R2 to see what he was about to do to the Separatists - Anakin knew what he was about to do was wrong and didn't want R2 to see him carrying out a massacre. It struck me as a parent trying to shelter his child. :(

okay, the fact that he didn't want to have R2 see the massacre makes sense, but don't you think anakin would have trusted R2 to like, take out the lights or something? after all, its a safe bet R2 heard what was going on, knowing R2.

Oh, I definately think Anakin could trust R2 to do anything he asked (I think that's sorta the tragedy with R2 - he has "ethics" and maybe even "emotions" - but probably not free will).

As for R2 hearing what was happening anyway - that's probable - and I don't think he needed to be an eyewitness to anything to realize what Anakin was going to do anyway: but I still think Anakin wanted to keep him in the dark as best he could. [face_peace]

I really hadn't thought of the fact that he may just not have wanted R2 to see it, but even at that I don't believe it was out of kindness to him if this was the case. Probably just didn't want him to record it as was said earlier and didn't want C-3PO finding out and running his mouth about it to Padme.

IMHO, Anakin just didn't want R2 involved. It wasn't going to be pretty. And yeah, Anakin did tell R2 to stay with the ship, but contrary to some opinions, I don't think it was in a threatning "stay w/ the ship or i'll destroy you." type of way but moreso a "I don't want you to take part in what i'm about to do." kind of way.

    But then again...

Darth Vader DID shoot down R2 in ANH. (though he likely didn't know it was R2)

You know, I've been trying to figure out why that little moment was in there and now it all makes sense. To show Anakin's change. There is also a whole thematic element to R2 being left behind in a critical situation. Like R2 knows everything and nothing, ya know. Like with Luke in ESB when the door closes on him just before his battle with Vader. Also, with Ben Burtt commenting on R2 being kinda like a child, this makes even more sense.
When the moment becomes more adult, R2 has to exit the room or not be present during the situation. The only angle on R2 I wanna figure out now is what's up with him getting blasted and taken out in the two key battles in the OT. Is it when it all comes down, the humans have to help themselves in order to win and use their own wit and ingenuity? Yeah, that sounds about right.=D=

I saw A New Hope yesterday (first time in months) and also thought about this. It's either just an amusing plot-hole, or maybe one of the several reasons Lucas paired R2 with Anakin in EP3.

There is frequent droid-related banter in the opening space battle of Revenge of the Sith.
The opening line of Ep3 is is "Lock on to them R2."

    When the buzzdroids arrive -
    Obi-Wan:
"R4, be careful, you have a..."
*Kenobi's R4 is "decapitated" by one of the droids*
    Obi-Wan:
    "Oh dear."
"They're shutting down all the controls."
Anakin then shoots at Kenobi's fighter, knocking off a couple of droids, but blasting off one of the wings.

R2 fighting a buzz-droid involves seemingly pointless enouragement from Anakin and Kenobi -
    Anakin:
    "Get him R2!"
    Anakin:
    "Watch out..."
    Obi-Wan:
    "R2, hit the buzz-droid centre-eye!"
    Anakin:
    "Yeah, you got him!"

But now you hear that dialogue, then in the next episode see Vader shooting at Luke -
    Luke:
    "I've lost R2!"

    heh
