According to the official Star Wars site, "R4-P17 started off as a traditional R4 unit, complete with the characteristic conical head, when she was nearly destroyed in a trash compactor mishap on Gyndine."

    However, according to the Insider:
"according to Episode II Incredible cross scetions, R4-P17 began his operational life as a cone headed R4 unit...."

I thought droids didn't have genders.

I always thought droids were neuter as well.

I think a droid's "sex" may just be subjective.. Especiall on R(insert # here) units.

I think droids are similar to cars in today's society. They don't have a gender, yet sometimes people refer to them in a gender-specific way (some people will give their cars names, or say "she's a beauty" when talking about their vehicle).

they have gender programing, for example R2-D2 had masculine progaming and KT-10(from the TPM correct me if i wrong about the number) had femanin programing as you could tell by her voice,it may be an editing error from eather the book or the website.

He/she sounded like any other R2 unit so I guess it has masculine programming. Or hey maybe somedays it's male, somedays it's female.

Yeah, ships/cars stuff don't have genders, yet we still refer to them as "she".

Maybe Obi-Wan just needed a female in his life, so he decided to make her a girl.

[face_laugh][face_laugh][face_laugh][face_laugh] oh, jedimasterguff, that was too funny. obi-wan should have a woman in his life, but it shouldn't be robot.

Maybe R4 is a hermaphroditic droid.

    Hey, it could happen...
