I know this incident has been discussed here b4 but can someone refresh my memory as to why the stormtrooper hits his head on that door?

I remember once on a show called Hey Hey its Saturday, they showed this clip in a bloopers segment and definately refered to it as an accident.

Is this meant to be a joke?

I cant understand for the life of me how Lucas could have missed it. Lol it even makes a noise.

If it was a genuine mistake its all the more funny :).

    Thanks.

It was a mistake that should've been redone but Lucas didnt have the time so he left it as it is. Ironically Lucas added the same joke in Episode II. When Jango is going into the Slave I in Kamino notice that the door hit him before he enters. Just an inside joke that any hardcore Star Wars fan should know.

Why did he hit his head?

"I can't see a thing in this helmet."

Yes, it's a blooper. None of the extras playing the Stormtroopers could see where they were going during the shooting of the movie. Consequently they were always bumping into things and falling over on set. As a result of the unseen accident whilst filming, ILM decided to mask the blooper by putting some sound effects in there to make out that it was supposed to happen. They also made a joke of it by having Mark Hamill refer to the lack of visibility when he was dressed up as a Stormtrooper.
