I keep hearing about the difference in regions/versions - AOTC had bits cut in the UK version - i hope they won't do the same for my beloved OT collection?

Does anybody know if there are differences to extras we might get for the 2 regions? is it worth my buying region 1 for my multi-region DVD player than region 2?

As far as I'm aware, the films themselves have never had anything cut from them in the UK... All the same, it might be worth checking the BBFC website closer to release, they publish a list of everything they have passed, noting if it has been cut or not (DVD extras included).

Since the films have in the past been given a U in the uk and as yet none of the proposed changes imply a need to change that rating, I think they should come through unscathed. The only changes I can see at present would be to any features or commentaries that have swearing in for instance.
Besides, the headbutt edit is pretty minor, and more amusing than anything (if I remember correctly, in the uk version, obi-wan falls over for seemingly no reason since they removed the headbutt). If the cut makes a non-uk DVD better than the uk DVD, it's only a tiny bit better.

EDIT: sorry I forgot region 2 was not merely UK, have edited my line above appropriately.

Hang on, not every region 2 DVD is a UK DVD...

I live in Holland (also region 2) and we got the uncensored AOTC, including the headbutt. So you can simply import your uncensored region 2 DVD's from another european country.

    Did someone say "butt"???? [face_laugh]

I'm from Holland as well, but I often order my DVDs in Australia. Ya gotta love the Internet! Prices there are way lower (even including shipment costs) and the service is outstanding!

Don't know if I can mention the site. Could be some advert uncalled for. Just PM me or something.

Butt ( ;) ) the region over there is 4. No problem for my player, although I won't have Dutch subs then...

    Ah, choices people!!!

Who needs dutch subs? that's for the Belgiums.

region 4... is that PAL or NTSC?

You're right about one thing Sylvanus: We euros get sometimes cheated out of extras: i.e. on the american Back to the Future Trilogy there's audio commentary on all 3 discs, and we only get a Q&A session on disk one (why is that? I really wanted to hear how they explain all those paradoxes)

But concerning the OT DVDs, I don't think there's any difference, not even in the UK versions.

The Austrian/ German DVD also has the headbutt and someone really stupid did the backcover text. Once it says "Joda" and then it says "Yoda". How could they not notice the "J"?

Also, I wonder how much they will change the CT when it comes to DVD. Especially ANH is full of things that need to get changed. Same with all the title scrolls. The THX versions included a all new SW title and text scroll (looks like a fanfilm scroll today) which corrected the "Krieg Der Sterne" to "Star Wars" for the continuety.
Same with "Tatuuin" being updated to Tatooine. Then the SE came out and it was suddenly the old text again.

In ANH Han calls the Falcon "Rasender Falke" but in TESB and ROTJ it's Millenium Falcon. Also, in ANH the Emperor gets referred as "Kaiser" but this was also changed for the sequels. I doubt they will correct all those little details. Anyway, we still have the "You're lucky you don't taste very well" line but the Shuttle line got redubbed with a totally differend sounding voice.

I think I figured out the BTTF thing: It's a discspace problem, region 2 has the audio in DTS also.

Since the SW extras are on a seperate disc, this shouldn't be a problem.

Nevertheless, I am considering to import my SW DVDs from region 1, so that I get the movies in their original pitch, but that's a whole other can of worms...

Apart from the extra Feature Film Audio Commentairies for all three parts and MJF's commentairies nothing seems to be missing.......LOL.
I own them. Still great DVDs and event greater movies.

I just hope Fox won't screw up the OT DVDs somehow.

That's exactly what I mean Billy (about BTTF), so I don't know what your point is?

    [gold leader]stay on target...[/gold leader]

You're not telling me that the German speaking region won't get the original audio track, are you? (or that you'd still prefer the synchronized audio track when you can choose?)

I was already annoyed by the subtitles in the video era, so I'm glad I can finally turn that BS off. 1% more Star Wars!

"Have the prequel DVD's been better about German translation?"

Not really. TPM was pretty good, but AotC keeps using "laser sword" (Laserschwert) instead of lightsaber (Lichtschwert), and has Cliegg riding a horse ("I can't ride anymore" -> "I couldn't ride a horse anymore"). And the voice for Anakin drives me nuts, but just because it was in Dragonball Z before and I couldn't stop thinking about the little whiny bald idiot :p

"You're not telling me that the German speaking region won't get the original audio track, are you? (or that you'd still prefer the synchronized audio track when you can choose?)"

Many aren't fluent enough in English or prefer the German dubbed version for some other reason.
But it's their loss. I don't know how they could fix things like "Kaiser".
And they can't fix any Vader lines in German, because the guy who did the original dub (who wasn't used for "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival") died last year.

Oh man, I hope Ian doesn't get new lines in his new holo scene. It will be terrible in German then.

I was stupid enough not to buy the SE in English when I was in London back in 12th grade, so I'll be more than happy to have a good copy of them. The Indy box set was perfect, the CT DVDs will be, too.

It's just a pity I won't get to watch them in Spanish :p

hehe, I once put on the French audio track of my TPM DVD, and pretended it was 'basic'...

    ...it didn't work.

Twilek, I suppose your post means that you approve of this 'DVD' thread? I think it can be an interesting (and educational) discussion. ;)

Hände hoch, John, sonst pumf ich dich full mit bleid...

lol, nice idea. I couldn't do that with any language. Most are too familiar or too strange.
I saw TPM in Italian once, though. Terrific voices! Quite enjoyable, too.

We let one thread about the Cover Art open, we let one thread about limited shipments open, we let one thread about ummm... something else open.
This has little to do with changes or content, mostly, so it's still kinda okay.
(Warning: Don't feel encouraged to open other DVD threads. I'll lock them because you smell funny or something!) We reserve the right to change our minds, though. ;)

Films dubbed in German always make me smile. And Plo-Koen: you're right about the subs. But I'm also thinking of the future. Someday, there will be little Incoms runnin' around and part of their education will be the way of the Force and everything Star Wars. And the subs could come in handy then.

I'll also throw in a German quote, from Miami Vice:

Tubbs, kuck mal, der Kumpel hat eine Kanone!

Now, Sonny Crocket had a distinct raw voice. The German counterpart didn't. Get my Cron-drift?

PS: no offense to Germans, or other movie-dubbers. Love the German language just as much as the English one.

LOL [face_laugh] Hey Rambo, wie gehtst?

I always wondered how a German would experience the Indiana Jones Trilogy? (especially part 1 & 3) When you understand the language that you're not really supposed to understand better than the language that you're supposed to understand better than the language that you're not really supposed to understand...

    If that makes any sense.

    "no offense to Germans"

Oh, offend the people responsible for the dubbings all you want. Every German with taste will be with you. I really hate this country sometimes when it comes to movies and books, especially Star Wars. At least they invented the World Wide Release before AotC. We got TPM 3 months later [face_plain]

Also, Star Wars isn't made for the German language. Or the German language for Star Wars.
    Bah.

Funny how this thread is now completely off topic...

But hey, I'm game (another one from Rambo):

    Bad guy: Wer bist du?

Rambo: Ich bin dein schlilmsten Alttraum!

I'm glad you're with me TLJ. What bothers me most with dubbed versions, is that no matter how good a dubber's intentions are, the original version always gets (a bit) damaged.

Threepio's voice is a good example of that. Just as R2's [face_laugh]. Just leave them be, because you cannot get Goldenrod's whiny voice right in any other language.

So I guess it's all about accents, intonations. On the other hand, dubbing Obi-Wan in TPM wouldn't be a bad idea...

3PO was fine in the CT

But they changed the voice for the prequels! Now it's the same guy who did "Short Circuit"'s Number 5!

Hey we're all here to learn right? And have a little fun now and then...

First, here's a link to the SW DVD box at that site I mentioned earlier. Mind you, this is a link to the item, not the site itself [face_mischief].

    Mysterious SW DVD box link

And Plo, please enlighten us on your thoughts on PAL and NTSC, since the Aussie (R4) version of the most anticipated, eagerly awaited movie collection in the history of Jawa kind, is PAL (Aussie standard).
