My title aside, what do you think the Jedi Council did upon discovering there was a drug that could heighten your connection to the Force?
I think, due to the lack of other references to the Bota, they probably ignored it or swept it under the table, so to speak. But that's just me.
    Your thoughts?

They would have to destroy it as it would make it far too easy for a Sith to create an army of dark side force users, especially if the drug was easily made and effective for a period of time

Well, they really couldn't do too much about it since

    a) the bota that had already been processed was needed for medical purposes and apparently there wasn't too much of it left

    and

    b) by the end of Jedi Healer it was revealed that bota was mutating again and this time it would be little more than a weed. not useful at all.

The Jedi stress self control, as well as some Sith. It seemed to me that Bariss was not totally in control of herself after ingesting the bota. Therefore, the Jedi would have shunned the "weed" as it clouded one's thoughts and tended to make one act rashly.

Doesn't Glitterstim pretty much give the user the ability to use the force?

It is said to increase a user's telepathic ability, allowing them to read minds. It really doesn't enhance any latent force potential.

Not really. It's more like a heightened sense of awareness that may manifest itself through some enhanced perceptions that seem similar to common Force based abilities such as telepathy & physical strength/stamina/balance/etc...

Well telepathy and telekinesis are pretty much what the force is as far as powers are concerned, aren't they?

They are "powers" that can be utilzed by Force users; however, in this case it is not the Force that is the avatar of the power, it's the mind of the user. Glitterstim enhances latent telepathic abilities during the high, not the power of the Force.

Oh I'm not suggesting that they're literally force powers, just that it gives you the same abilities that mastery of certain aspects of the force do.

Yeah, that's true. I, personally, have never heard/read about telekinetic powers from glitterstim, but certainly the telepathic boost harkens back to the familar Force-power. As well as the enhanced strength and dexterity.

I'm not sure what it was in, but I seem to remember Corran's Father/Grandfather or whoever passing off, to Corran, his telekinetic force use as a side effect of being exposed to Glitterstim. Can't remember what it was in though.

Bota was just a hallucinogenic: Bariss believes she's all-powerful because she's young and naive. Luminara, on the other hand, is either humoring her apprentice or simply a dolt.

The telepathic powers from glitterstim were shown in The Paradise Snare. They were quite powerful.

Anyways, I used a lot of performance-enhancing drugs in KotOR, especially for the final battle. Battle stimulants and various kinds of adrenals.

[face_shame_on_you] Now now, drugs don't really make for a satisfying final battle. Do you think Obi-Wan used drugs to defeat Anakin in the Epic Duel? Of course not. He got his high from the High Ground.

Actually... I've been wondering about that vile of bota Barriss had on her when she left the planet. Who did she give it to? Yoda? The old dude could use a bit of a pick-me-up.

That just got me thinking of that episode of the Simpsons where Mr. Burns fell in love with a 20-something and got a superpowerful aphrodesiac for...you know.

That's how I took it. I could picture Barriss walking into the Jedi counsel with a vile of LSD claiming it 'enhanced her force abilities' and how she can now smell colors. Maybe they sent her to Drug treatment class before she could officially become a Knight.

I think that any mystical order with such a syncretic background, if you will, would already be comfortable with using psychedelics as meditation aids. What, you don't think any of the traditions whose practices have been absorbed into the Jedi at any point used psychedelics? That's crazy.

Irek was a stonner too. A presidential guard described various types of drugs once, when Leia was trying to work out what was sedating her in Planet of Twilight.

Medstar wasn't the first time Star Wars has seen substances or materials affecting Force use.

Side Trip. Hal TKs the trigger of his gun to bring down Zekka Thyne, and Corran calls him on it, jokingly asking if he got TK powers from the spice vapor in the room. Hal says he slid up his middle finger onto the trigger. Corran's comment seems to be a joke, not an actual comment on glitterstim's effects.

I was just reading some of the old Russ Manning newspaper strips from Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures, and I decided this thread needed bumping.

You see, Han, Chewie, and the droids are all on Kashyyyk for Life Day, only it seems that Life Day is going to be cancelled! Why, you ask?

Well, you see, a crucial part of the Life Day ritual appears to be "their special food" - something called "orga root," which is only available on the lowest levels of Kashyyyk. The village elder of Chewie's village thinks that all the stormtoopers down there make it too dangerous, blah blah blah.

Anyway, here's an interesting bit of dialogue:

C-3PO: Why is orga root so important to the Wookies, Master Han?
Han Solo: A big part of their Life Day celebration is a spiritual passage to the Life Tree... where Wookie culture began! Orga root helps them make the journey!

So, let me get this straight. The Wookies all get together and have a big party where they eat the sacred ritual plant that helps them take a spiritual journey?

    Gotcha.

Then, after this enlightening bit of information, they have an adventure where they all descend into the jungle, talk to the plants, and make peace with them after some Imperial troopers get eaten by the sentient jungle for cutting down trees, they all come back and have a little orga root party with lots of pretty colors and sparkly lights.

Did I mention that the Wookie village is drawn to look like a bunch of mushrooms?
