Now its official. she is Rey skywalker. although by name and born of the Palpatine linage. all marketing material, merchandising and expanded lore will call her Rey Skywalker. how do you guys feel about her taking the name and officially continuing as the new skywalker? do you find it acceptable? do you feel its a cheat? what do you think?

It’s okay. It just had a different message than TLJ.

TLJ: “you can come from no significant bloodline, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be great.” Similar to Ratatouille.

TROS: “It doesn’t matter if you come from a criminal/evil family. Blood doesn’t matter to who you choose to be.”

It's fine that is far from the biggest problem the movie has. I assumed they where going to get rid of the Jedi name and just call all new Jedi's Skywalker

Meh. She knew them for a year then decides to take their last name and bury the lightsabers on a planet that I'm sure Anakin and Luke wouldn't really have fond memories of anymore. Just weird. Ben is the only way you can do that ending and it actually make sense and feel right.

Bad. She shouldn't have been Rey Palpatine or Rey Skywalker.

She had a few moments of vulnerability that -- this is probably exactly the wrong word, but I use it with respect -- humanized her. She seemed like a flesh-and-blood character for a while there, rather than this shining icon who can do no wrong.

As long as she’s not Rey Windu...I would’ve been eating humble pies if that would have happened. Lol

Woo Hoo!! Great weekend!! Palpatine bloodline survives and Pats clinched the division!!

The moment with the old woman and the visions of Luke and Leia, culminating in Rey adopting the Skywalker name, was all a bit too on the nose for me. And count me among those who thought that "Skywalker" would replace "Jedi."

Plus, it ended where it started, on a planet at least half the Skywalkers hated. I don't see that as very fitting or satisfying.

Rey starts on a desert planet alone with no family, and ends the trilogy on a desert planet with a dead "family". Her boyfriend just died. I don't see how it was all that hopeful either lol.

That scene would have been more meaningful in every way if it was Ben... in my opinion. Rey taking the Skywalker name was just lame.

To me it makes sense for Rey to take the Skywalker mantle.

Both the Jedi and the Sith carry far too much baggage to merit continued use of their name and most in the Galaxy no longer have a true connection to ether anyway.

The Skywalker lineage is one of hope and redemption and can claim both the positive and negative aspects of both the light and the dark while forging a new middle path that is less constrained and dogmatic but focused on making Beings lives a better and safer place.

As for Rey, she certainly is not going to use the Palpatine name , but has chosen to honor the legacy of those with whom she has forged a true connection and respect Luke and Leia.

I like that her parents chose not to take his name either and become “nobodies” and that she honored them at the end when she spoke to him and chose the name of her grandfather’s enemy, who I’m sure her parents would have been happy to hear she met and built a relationship with, since that would have been best case scenario for them when they left her.

She was pretty close to Leia in this film so I had no problem with it. She also makes amends with Luke.

I don't have a problem with it at all. It resonates with me on a personal level. Her parents even rejected the ways of the Emperor to the point of hiding Rey as a child; risking their own lives. The message is: You're not your past. You choose your destiny and build on the family that has been family to you. Rey is clearly not her grandfather. He's a psychopath. She is filled with compassion. Two very different people. She doesn't have to take on any name she doesn't want.

That said, could there have been a better ending? Sure.

But, I would not want to be any director who would have to close off the Skywalker saga, and have an ending that would satisfy the majority of the fandom.

    Isn't going to happen.

Technically Ben Solo, who is a Skywalker, passed all his life energy to her, which makes her elligible to the Skywalker name.

Also, why not? Both Luke and Leia as ghosts approved it.

Also, Leia trained Rey, and Leia was also a Skywalker by blood. Leia was the closest to a family she ever got after being left alone in Jakku.

So she had all the right to do it, and I am glad she did.

Nobody wants to have the same family name as space-Hitler, so Rey Palpatine is completely out of question, That family name has to die.

I kind of like it, mostly because in my opinion its an interesting contrast to Luke. Both the main protagonist who are related to evil people, however one tries to redeem his father and embraces his name while the other knows she can't redeem her grandfather and rejects his name.

One of my main gripes with TLJ was that making Rey a non-Skywalker didn't jive with the saga's thematic structure about generations of the Skywalker family. I always thought Episode IX had to salvage this in some way. My expectation was that Rey would become apart of the Skywalker family through marrying Ben or something, like how Padme became apart of the family through marrying Anakin.

I guess Rey adopting the family name as her own works well enough for me. I imagine she'll look to the ghosts of Luke, Leia, and Ben as part of her family for the rest of her life (along with Finn).

Making her a Palpatine was completely unnecessary, though. I still don't see what that added to the story.

The Tatooine stuff was forced, but Rey taking the name is something I thought they'd do for years. I thought they'd let Finn do the same, since his last name is also blank.

It was always weird to me when they did the character unveiling with the trading cards and you saw "Poe Dameron" and "Finn" and "Rey." Then, after TFA, it seemed pretty clear she wasn't related to Han and Leia with the off-chance she was Luke's daughter, then TLJ crystallized that she wasn't that either.

So Rey's entire story is all about her finding her place/family after being left an orphan, they even make it super obvious at points. The only place to really land is either Solo or Skywalker.

I think the execution was super clumsy. Rey and Luke NEEDED to have a real relationship to each other, which is where TLJ really dropped the ball for me. Still, she clearly idolized Luke Skywalker in TFA and still believed in his myth even when Luke didn't, so it's really more about honoring that. And her forming a relationship with Leia, which unfortunately they couldn't follow through on.

She can take the name cause she's basically taking the torch and all the Skywalker's are dead so she's hardly going to be challenged on it.

Well JJ could've had Luke still play a big role. Just because he's a Force ghost now doesn't mean he couldn't have had more interactions with Rey. It could've shown how their relationship grew since TLJ, how both have changed etc.
