The Force. A mystical energy field surrounding all life, binding the galaxy together. The dark side and the light. But what is it? Hitherto presented as a vaguely defined conflict between opposite forces, the light and the dark side, the Force had always defied definitive explanation. A hodge-podge of eastern and western mysticism and theology, that didn't quite hold true to any of it's sources. Step forward, Rian Johnson. Johnson is able to finally make sense of Lucas' pop theology, presenting this mysterious energy source as the innate push-pull tension between all life, all of existence. But Johnson's genius runs deeper than this. Where Lucas came up short, Johnson reveals that the Force itself is cyclical in nature, with the light and dark ebbing and flowing, much as a tide rises and falls. Finally, Lucas' rhyming and repeated motifs are brought into clarity, with Johnson framing them as a metatextual discourse between the series and the Force itself. In short, Rian Johnson created the Force. This thread is for the discussion of Rian's vision of this mystical energy field, and where this exciting new element may take future stories.
Rian Johnson made me a prequel hater. I think even George would agree that Star Wars is nothing without him.
It’s more than that. George ruined Star Wars with too much CGI and poor dialogue. JJ brought the franchise back from the edge with his real world effects. Rian put the franchise on his back and took it to new heights with his courageous, human, and above all, original and definitive vision of what every Star Wars fan has been wanting for the last 41 years.
