Is there any Force abilities or powers that you consider over-the-line, unbelievable, or just plain ridiculous? Or that the level of it borders on ludicris?(sp?)

Sometimes the Force powers I have heard or seen in the EU come across that way to me. Flow-walking is one that I consider ridiculous. Luke's cloaking a whole planet with the Force is another. Certain objects (like crystals, stones, plants or trees) holding or channeling the Force comes across as unbelievable. To a degree, some places having a fountain of Force energy (Light or Dark) coming out would be over-the-line.

In my opinion, when an auther makes Force powers that border on Fantastic or Godlike scale, or has characters that are so powerful that they border on god-level, then I must disagree. It for me, makes it hard to relate to them, as many Force users have abilities that are amazing anyway.

This is not a bash against the EU. I like the EU for the most part, except for where the plot points or character powers get ridiculous. But this is a thread where a person can just say, "Yeah, that Force power they thought up was pretty dumb."

When does Luke cloak a planet with the force? I can't seem to remember that one.

On the subject of absurd force powers, the whole size matters not/do-or-do-not Force philosophy is G-canon.

Shatterpoints. Not the real shatterpoints used by all authors with regards to Mace Windu, but rather this new fangled one concocted by Troy Denning for Invincible.

As long as the use of great power never becomes trivial, I wouldn't find it ridiculous. It's only when powers are portrayed too casually or as silly devices to move the plot along in a lazy way that they can hurt a novel/comic. Dorsk 81, for one example, managed one of the greatest force pushes ever. However, he not only had a great deal of help but he also sacrificed a great deal to accomplish it. It wasn't silly or hurtful to the plot. It was a great example of sacrifice and the culmination of Jedi teachings.

Now, The Force Unleashed may shake many people's views on just how canon a videogame should be. Some games such as KoToR do a great service to the mythology while the action games tend to oversimplify and create characters out of the blue that have an overly large impact on Galactic events merely due to the way action-oriented videogames generally work in terms of plot and/or gameplay.

There will likely be even crazier things happen in The Force Unleashed than even the trailers/previews have hinted at. I admit, the Star Destroyer force pull/push is awesome but... well... yeah.

my memory of the TotJ comics is hazy at best, but didn't someone(s) use the Force to make some stars explode or something like that? I always thought that was a little over-the-top.

If anything, I would expect videogames and the cartoons to get more relative weighting in canon going forward, not less.

There's nothing like the good ole clone war cartoon to over exaggerate force powers.:p

Uh...how about half of them? :p

Deadly Sight has to be one of the worst offenders, though.

A few that really bother me....

    1. Flow Walking: Though I hated the idea its made worse by the fact it was dropped like a hot potato.
    2. The Care Bear Stare: In Darksaber the Jedi students all join hands and create a massive force push that sends a fleet of Star Destroyers across the galaxy......
    3. The Force projection in LOTF, so glad it ended in Fury.
    4. Orbalisks

Most I really like, including Battle Medatation and the Fallanassi Illusions. I just can't get behind anything that makes random Jedi seem superpowerful. If the Jedi were that strong Order 66 would have failed miserably.

I like flow walking... it's a cool take on Yoda's teachings about seeing into the future and the past with the Force. Well I did up until Invincible, at least. Now in the end it's not that much different than what Yoda taught because you can't really change things, you can only effect people's memories of the past events. Though I guess now that I think about it that is sort of weird because if someone remembers, say, Anakin Solo not dying, then wouldn't they be confused to find he is dead, after all? Maybe someone can explain this better to me.

Yeah, the Mace Windu stuff was pretty ridiculous in the Clone Wars cartoon. Let's hope the new series isn't so extreme. I don't like anything that makes the user too God-like... it's paints them into a corner.

I was also never a big fan of the Jedi speed run thing at the start of TPM... it's a cool idea on paper but it was weird the way it looked on film. I thought the film actually jumped or something when I was watching it at first.

To go with the ridiculous force powers, I would also like to suggest Cool Force Powers:

I love when anyone Force leaps or like sommersaults from one cat-walk to another. Not a big jump, just a cool flip only a Jedi or Sith could make.

Force-lightning is cool when not over done, and only by Sith. I believe dark-siders shouldn't be as powerful as Sith.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the shatterpoint that Jacen uses in Invincible and also the blood trail served a purpose though I wouldn't want to see it again...

And I just love it when someone uses their lightsaber to absorb Force lightning. Don't know why, maybe it's because Obi-wan was the first person we say do it and he was so bad@ss when he did it -- like it was no big deal. lol.

    1. Force Ghost (you're dead...deal with it)

    2. Force Thought Bomb

    3. Force Projection (or whatever the heck it was that Alema Rar was using)

    4. Force Storm

I would've had Force Flow-walking on there, but LotF: Invincible did a very good job of explaining it and turning it into a believable Force Power.

Most of these powers don't bother me much, as they're basically extrapolations of stuff established in the movies.

Flow Walking? ESB and the whole prequel trilogy show Jedi envisioning the past or future via the Force, so there's definitely some degree of time-related capabilities to be used. Flow walking may have taken it a step too far at times, but the basic concept isn't much different than what we've seen.

Force fountains/objects strong in the Force? ESB established the tree & cave on Dagobah as being a place strong in the darkside.

Even that "Deadly Sight" mentioned above doesn't sound much different from Force Lightning, exception being localized to a target instead of being sent directly from the user to the target.

It's not so much the Force Powers being over the top for me as it is that they're usually used to attempt to make something we've already read about seem new.

I've always been rather uncomfortable with Sever Force. No indvidual or group should be able to just cut a hole in the Force. We're talking about the single greatest power in the universe. It's kind of like killing God in my book: how believable is that?

I liked the force thought bomb; that cracked me up. Granted it was a little ridiculous what with all of the Sith having to gather togetherin a cave and destroy themselves to pull it off, but the idea wasn't too bad.

My beef isn't so much with the Force oddities themselves, but rather with who is doing it. Skywalker blood, okay, you can have some extra weird mido power - but when it comes to these run of the mill Jedi suddenly assuming power that is beyond anything a supposedly super Skywalker Jedi could do, then they go too far to me. That knocks canon on its face.

I'm with you on this one.

In general, I hate the way TOTJ handled a lot of Force-related issues. Sever Force makes my brain hurt with hate, the Force Light nuking of Yavin just plain sucked, but arguably the worst of all was the way falling to the dark side happened. Ulic gets poisoned with a Sith poison that turns him to the dark side, Crado and the others get turned by shards of an evil crystal going into them and warping their minds. So so so horrible.
