I made my own Rorshach mask. Made it from a Balaclava pattern.

The material was the easiest to see through (out of) without being able to see straight through it to my face. It's pretty thick strands, almost like white burlap, but not quite.

Now, I need to ink/sharpie/marker/etc onto it to get a pattern similar to this.

In the comic, it's two layers of latex with ink caught between them that move around with heat and his facial expression. Practically, it's ink on the mask.

I'd like to make it EASIER to see because of the ink rather than more difficult. This makes a bit of sense if the ink stained the strands of the fabric and held the fuzz of the strands down rather than completely coating the fabric like paint would. Get what I'm suggesting?

Any ideas on how to do this (make it easier to see out) without cutting eye holes and putting black fabric that's easy to see out over the holes?

You may need to try the Spider-man approach, which is basically a shell over the face, and then the cloth mask goes over the shell. The shell not only creates an idealized facial structure for the mask but it has numerous small breathing holes as well as eye holes. You'd have to find a thin fabric that you can see out of. A sharpee-treated splotched area for the eyes should theoretically be see-through-able. The shell you'd use would have to be white. You'd have to very carefully pre-determine the position and density of the air holes and coordinate them with the "inkblot" pattern, as the air holes may be visible through white areas of fabric.

Finally, my suggestion is to go with larger black splotches rather than a series of too-detailed small ones.

Try cutting splotches out on paper, overlay them onto not only the fabric but the facial shell to see if the air hole positions are sufficiently covered. You can actually cut the splotch pattern out of paper and use the hole as a template and overlay guide.

In the movie it looks like the ink is going to "bleed" in random patterns on the mask.

What you might want to do is cut two holes in the middle of where you will have a dark area and sew some black gauze material into the area to see through.

My 2 cents alter a white face sock and dot it with a sharpie in the places you want it
