Has anyone else heard that Mark Hamill has announced that, after 18 years of voicing the characters in the various cartoons, video games, etc., the upcoming video game Arkham Asylum II will be Mark Hamill's last turn as the Joker? I can't help but wonder why anyone would want to give up a role that they have done such wonderous work with over the years.

Plus, it's not like he's just turning down another opportunity. So far as I know, there hasn't even been one presented to him, he's just stating, for future notice, that he never wants to play him again. So what happens if the Timm-verse continues is some form, and they bring back The Joker? Will they just have to get someone new?

Maybe he's just tired of it. Maybe he feels like he's become too identified with it. Or maybe he feels like he's just been outdone by Heath Ledger. Whatever the reason, I just have one thing to say: The day Kevin Conroy stops voicing Batman, we are all doomed!

    Slimy!

I totally agree, Spidey! The talent and professionalism that he brought to the role have always impressed me. I'll always be in his camp.

Well, Mark's is the voice I always have in my head whenever I read a comic with the Joker in it. But voiceover work is hardly the same as real, in-front-of-a-camera work. We'll never know if he can truly play a Joker that's better than Heath's (which was indubitably much better than Jack's).

I can't do that type of Joker voice. Too hard for me. The Heath joker voice is the one I do.

And as far as all the cartoon jokers out there, he will forever be the Joker. all the others suck...

yep. Heath was good, but he went off and died, so one of these days there will be a search for a new live-action Joker, and hopefully one with a good psych profile and won't lose himself in the role and not be able to come back down to earth afterwards.

Hamill will always be the Joker to me, with all the with various actors being pale imitations to him. He should either be the Joker or the Voice of the Joker with someone else as the body if and when they decide to bring back the Joker in the films, because they can't keep a good villain down for too long..

I don't get why this is so sad. He already stopped when the Joker last appeared on Justice League (Robot Chicken doesn't count :p), and it was a pleasant surprise that he returned for Arkham Asylum and its sequel. It's not like there are any other Joker appearances to look forward to.

Is the Joker in Brave&Bold? Is he done by The Batman's Joker (KMR?) there?

It's a bit like learning he won't ever play that dude from Wing Commander ever again. Oh noes!

But how can you compare cartoon vs live action? Unless you mean on just voice alone.

Sad day indeed. Wonder if he ever dreams of translating that awesome Joker voice to a big-screen role? We can only hope [face_praying]

Its said that voice acting is much more difficult than live action, but beside that, the other two weren't nearly as spot on in their performance. Hamill's take IMO is the definitive Joker performance, despite it not being live action.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Heath's performance, but its never felt that faithful to me. Hamill remains spot on. He's sinister, ridiculous, hilarious and frightening all at once.

Sitting in a studio, script in hand, talking into a microphone is much more difficult than being on set, filmed, acting with your face and body as well as your voice?

It's a different set of skills, granted, especially if you are reading your lines without any co-stars, but I think it's pretty big to say it's harder than acting in front of a camera.
