You could carve them out of wood.

Some local friends of mine made a Mr. Tumnus very well, so she asked me to post the info (they're on too many boards already, and can't manage taking another one on here so...)

Here are some pics I took:

    [image=http://sistersola.com/HatsOffDay-Jun-3-06-016.jpg] [image=http://sistersola.com/HatsOffDay-Jun-3-06-017.jpg] [image=http://sistersola.com/HatsOffDay-Jun-3-06-027.jpg] [image=http://sistersola.com/HatsOffDay-Jun-3-06-034.jpg]

And here's some video of Martin walking:

    And here's her reply:

Folks over at the Narniaweb have been talking about a number of ways to make
hooves. One of the most popular methods (as it provides some actual
support) is to turn tall cork heels into hooves by building the hooves over
the toe of the heel and then covering the back of the heel itself with fur
so that it looks sort of like a Clydesdale horse hooves. Clydesdales are
the larger horses with the excess of hair behind, around and above their
    hooves.

    Miss Monster uses this method:
    http://www.missmonster.com/costume/costume.shtml

As for our Mr. Tumnus. The amount of balance and patience is required in
order to get up on your toes and not fall over.
The hooves are carved of wood and his toes basically sit inside the hoof.
We're still fussing with a number of ways to avoid his feet getting bruised
or blistered. With each modification we feel we are getting a little closer
to a final result that won't have him hurting like mad for a day or two
    afterwards.
In Martin's case, this is also part of the reason why Tiff, Jeff and I stay
so close to him when he is in costume. One fall could really do him in.
The umbrella helps with his balance a bit as well and provides a 'pivot' if
he rocks off centre a bit he can simply push straight once more.
So if you are willing to practice you can drop by our entry in the Narniaweb
    Scrapbook at:
    http://costumes.narniaweb.com/scrapbook3.asp#16

And you can drop by our Narnia page for a bit of an update (and photos)at:
    http://www.carrhunger.com/hobby/narnia/Narnia.html

Or drop in on the various Narniaweb discussions including:
    http://www.narniaweb.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10725&SCRN=0&PN=0&TPN=1

    http://www.narniaweb.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7824&KW=faun

ALSO.... On the Underworld (or Underworld 2) DVD there is a special feature
that talks about how they did the werewolf legs. That may help and inspire
as well. It's much more complicated but sometimes staring at complicated
things you can back figure to a simpler version from there.

    Hope this helps you out.

You might want to check on some Furry/anthro costuming sites as well. I have seen pictures of people dressed up in furry costumes that had legs like that, and have seen info on the 'net explaining how they did it.

yeah...carve it out of wood, then go to walmart, buy the respective colour of fur and hot glue it on there. or that's my ideas anyway....

Those stilts are called Powerisers or Powerskips. They can be difficult to find online, but if you're lucky you can find a pair on ebay for around $200.

I'm using the pair I have for my Grievous costume.

For more 'riser info go here: http://poweriser.tribe.net/

    I have the stilts :)

Just trying to figure out the method for the hooves on the costume.

Having the "pants" sewn next week, and still deciding on wether to order prosthetic horns or make them from sculpey.

Been thinking about a sculpey hoof as well. Have a tire sock on my risers that may hold the mold of a hoof. I'd really like something that is easily removed and such though. :)

Latex mask central posted two decent pics of the Underworld werewolf stilts here.

Then there's the boots made for Balsac the Jaws of Death from GWAR as made by Bobby Gorman.

    Gwar! I love Gwar!

I saw a couple of guys at a Con in St Louis about tens years back. Their stilts were wood, but the hoof itself was solid fiberglass resin. No fabric, just solid resin poured around the board.

Thanks for the input and advice. I think I'm going to try "Friendly Plastic" for the initial set of hooves.

Anyone ever use "Friendly Plastic" on any size project?

sounds like a cool project. I was thinking the minotaur from narnia would be a kick ass stilt costume.

I've never used it, but I've heard fun stuff about it. Sounds like a good starting point to me. I don't know how much detail you want though. Like striations in the hooves and stuff, you know? Maybe when you're done sculpting the hooves, you can soften them slightly with a hair dryer or hot water and just press the edge of a metal ruler into it to get those striations or something.

I also don't know how well it takes paint. It might be fine, but if you haven't thought that far, I'd check it out.

Minotaur would rock as well, and I might try to make one after I see how the faun works out. Would be a good starting point. Hoping to start this next week, or the week after (moving into new home and all). I'll post some pics when I finish and along the way in case anyone decides to take a similar project up.
