"Search your feelings, you know it to be true" How this vibes throughout the Saga...

...This is said multiple times throughout the saga, but even when it isn't said there are cases where it applies.

    - Coincidentally (or probably intentionally), the saga starts out with Obi-Wan (of all people) feeling something strange ('elsewhere, elusive') but he doesn't delve into it.

    - Gui-Gon senses something strange in Anakin, he obviously searched his feelings in depth because he was 100% sure his feelings were true - to the point of acting on that feeling even when 1 second away from death.

    - Opposing Gui-Gon, Yoda felt Anakin's clouded future - he felt something had the potential of going seriously wrong there and was so hellbent on that feeling that he opposed the Council to have Anakin trained.

    - Anakin felt his mothers pain & suffering, whether intentional or not (being in his dreams and all) he knew there was something wrong - whereas ObiWan thought it mere dreams.

    - Palpatine probably felt alot (...ok that didn't sound right AT ALL), he could foresee Anakin's darkside, he could feel that the Jedi were weakening and he could feel the future of it all.

    - I like to think Vader sensed Luke at the trench run, then after searching his feelings (like Palpy later tells him to) he knew that it was none other than his offspring. This connection is unique because Palpatine can't sense it/Luke/Anakin.

    - Luke felt Anakin in Vader, Vader/Anakin nearly commands him to do so and as he does he can feel that Anakin is struggling. That there's something good within that suit, it even reaches the point where he feels that Anakin still has the ability to become good again.

    Anything i missed, a thought perhaps ?

I agree that searching your feelings is a big theme and the way the Force seems to work in a big way, especially in the practically untrained. Anakin wins the podrace by feeling his way through the course instead of intellectualizing it, and the same for Luke blowing up the first Death Star. It's also the way Luke realizes that Leia is his sister, and it seems to me that it has to be the way Vader finally made his decision to throw Palpatine off the balcony as well as how Leia was able to receive Luke's telepathic message when he was hanging onto the antenna

    :D.

In the new version of ESB:

Palpatine says "Search your feelings Lord Vader, you will know it to be true" when Vader is playing dumb about Luke's identity.

The line is repeated later at Bespin by Vader to Luke, because Luke won't accept Vader's identity.

A mirror perhaps - or am I looking too deeply?o_O

A definite parallel, especially since Lucas re-edited it to be in there later. :)

Perhaps it's not so much "searching" your feelings as being true to them. Anakin lost his way because he turned his back on those he loved and committed heinous crimes. He was only redeemed when he admitted to himself that he loved his son and destroyed the emperor, balancing the force and toppling the main pillar of the empire. Likewise, Luke saved his father because he knew he loved him too much to just kill him and let him go.

I disagree. I think it's definitely searching your feelings, thinking about them, as opposed to just going on them automatically. I think there's a theme in the Saga that you have to make choices and bear the consequences of them. I believe what is being said here is that you have to know and understand your feelings to make good choices. Anakin knew his feelings, but he didn't really understand them.

At the same time, you can't just completely go on logic. In the PT, Obi-Wan tells Anakin to "use the Force. Think!" But in the OT, he tells Luke to "stretch out with your feelings." I believe another theme in SW is faith, and with faith there's a limit to how much you can really know. You have to go on your feelings and trust after that.

But I don't think SW is advocating knee-jerk reactions based on your feelings. This is exactly how Anakin lets himself fall to the Dark Side. At the same time, you can't be completely devoid of feeling as the PT Jedi try to be. That's their downfall.

I think it shouldn't be feelings but rather intuition. Intuition is a *very* effective tool once you've learned how to use it. I'm speaking of real life, not of Star Wars.

In Star Wars, I think that has been transported into that GFFA Universe : Feelings and Intuition are to me more or less based on the same (althgough some I know would disagree).

A movie cannot be made - if it includes humans - without things that are real-life esperiences. Like the taste of sweets, for example. So I think that this "feelings" thing was just transported by George Lucas into the movie to express something that works indeed in real life : Intuition. I have often had "a bad feeling about this" when I felt making a big mistake, or something serious happening to me.

So, the feelings might be used as a way to communicate and store information. An Empath (even *that* exists in real life ! ) can senmse things about people. For example fear, hate, love, etc. This can be used to interpret something a person says. With this, Luke could for example - if he was an Empath - sense the feelings of Yoda, Vader or the Emperor - and sense at least that this person was not lying but rather believes that what this person says is right.
