So I am writing this post to you from the comfort of my air conditioned home, listening to the soothing sounds of Death Cab For Cutie, and chatting away and my $4,000 computer. Half way around the world, in the city of Bangkok, over a million women prostitute themselves on a daily basis just to survive. In a place where "honourable" jobs pay approximately $5 a day for a 14-hour shift, these women charge American men $15 - $40 an hour to have sex with them. Most are dirt poor, have AIDS, children, and are very hungry. There are actual "sex vacations", that are organized and run by Americans, who plan out vacations to spend 5 - 7 days in Bangkok taking advantage of the poverty. There the age of consent is 14. Some bars require you to take two women "with" you. Others have their women perform oral sex on you while you're drinking your beer at the bar, sometimes free of charge.
I read this all today in a magazine while I was at work today. One of their writers went undercover for some investigative journalism. Using a fake name, he signed up for one of these "sex vacations", and went on the trip with about 20 other men. While there, he would "act the part" and purchase women, and then when he got them alone in his hotel room, he would explain to them that he didn't want to have sex, he just wanted to talk to them.
A lot of the girls were confused, but when they finally understood, a lot of them would begin talking about how poor they were, how much they hate their job, and how filthy it makes them feel. How they resent America, but at the same time, they do it because the money is necessary.
Aside from the prostitutes, there is also a type of "hired" Fake Girlfriend. Instead of purchasing her for a night, you actually pay on a continuing basis, and the girl will follow you around for as long as you pay her. The average time of these is approximately 3 - 5 days, where the women are paid to pretend to be in love with you. They sleep in your hotel, go out to dinner with you, show you the city. They manipulate you until you are almost convinced that the girl in your arm really is almost your girlfriend.
I can't seem to write it as powerfully as it hit me earlier today, but if you happen to be in a store anytime later this month, I suggest you pick up the new "Marie Claire" magazine with Reese Witherspoon on the cover. I started crying halfway through reading the story, and it's still upsetting me as I write this. If you can't buy the magazine, go to the bookstore or library and sit down and read it. You might not be glad you did, because of the upsetting nature, but it sure makes you appreciate what you have now. I sure do.

As you read that, did it ever occur to you that the people who really need these kinds of vacations are JCers?

You just found out about this, so you're naturally enraged. This kind of thing and much, much worse goes on, and has always gone on, and attempting to fight it by complaining to people like us is fighting a losing battle: spitting into a storm. Humanity is no more doomed for this than for anything else it's done. Yes, I feel for the plight of these women, as I feel for the plight of young teenage prostitutes in the United States or anywhere else. But frankly, ranting about the situation isn't helpful. They're in an awful situation, but you know what? It's probably the best of the alternatives available to them. That's why they're doing it. Which doesn't make it less awful, but you're attacking the problem from the wrong angle. Look at the bigger picture. Learn about the economic situation over there. Get active politically. Crap, the water's ready to boil over on the stove. I'll be back later.

not to metion the hundreds of illegal prostitution rings in Bangkok that have to do with children under 14.

It makes me sick to think of how many powerful CEOs of big corporations in America are going over there to have sex with little kids because they think it's harmless if it's not in the U.S.A.

They had that on the show Rescue Me. The one girl has a fetish of makin a guy cheat on his spouse/girlfriend. And he cheated on his wife with her, but when his wife left him, The girl he cheated with also did (since he was not taken anymore). So he found this "Rent-a whore" (I call it that) and she knew that she was a fake gf and helped him out, but eventually, the last two episodes, the guy fell in love with the "whore" and she fell in love with him. He also offered to pay for her release, as she was under some kind of contract. Have to see what happens in Tuesdays episode. It is sad to know things like that really go on

The problem is, because of the SEVERE poverty of the country, the average American is filthy rich compared to the people that live there. That is why, in a sick twisted kind of way, it's a "win-win situation". The guy gets a girl for what is little money for him, and the girl gets what is a LOT of money for her. Which is why it's such a big problem.

Exactly. It's a win-win situation. The guy gets to have sex cheap with a girl in a place where that's relatively legal. The girl gets a lot more money than she would for just about anything else she could do with the skills she has. That's why it goes on. Attacking a win-win situation from the outside in the way you are is, as I said, generally a pretty useless thing.

 

By "Americans" I mean North Americans, which is a "wealth" generalization. And I am not blaming a country, I am blaming evil people.
