In an intriguing change to the source material, Villeneuve has also updated Dr. Liet Kynes, the leading ecologist on Arrakis and an independent power broker amid the various warring factions. Although always depicted as a white man, the character is now played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Rogue One), a black woman. “What Denis had stated to me was there was a lack of female characters in his cast, and he had always been very feminist, pro-women, and wanted to write the role for a woman,” Duncan-Brewster says. “This human being manages to basically keep the peace amongst many people. Women are very good at that, so why can’t Kynes be a woman? Why shouldn’t Kynes be a woman?”

Interesting idea indeed. Thing is, she has some HUGE shoes to fill as Dr. Kynes. Max was really good in this role, it was right down his alley.

I'm kind of speechless. This is the perfect time, place, and choice to make a move like this.

Left: Yay, Kynes is a woman
Right: Nooo, Kynes is a woman
Me: Sigh. Somehow Liet Bombadil has not been cut.

I'm not against Kynes being a woman, I was just kind of surprised because (like many people) I have many preconceptions in my head of what these characters should look like. I always pictured Kynes as a thin white guy with glasses. Kind of like the Martin Brody character from Jaws.

@Revanator There is no name for such a rule, so I will call it the Bechdel Corollary... Wherever there is, that ideal future, a benchmark towards its proximity is the count, or percentage, of:
    1. science fiction titles in tv or film
    2. that have a lead or significant support actress of African Amerian / African other heritage
    3. where the content is NON-ironic, NON-camp, NON-comic, NON-Wheedon, NON-Marvel, NON-quip, NON-twee, NON-simpering, NON-teehee, NON-self-referential, NON-wall breaking
    4. which generally accompanies earnest, sincere world building that endeavors to reduce the cost of suspension of disbelief. (or, lowers the barriers to the reality of the fiction...)

Altered Carbon is the paradigmatic exemplar, at the moment, for a quorum of reasons. The Expanse is second. Although I do not like Star Trek Discovery, myself, it is up there in this 'Bechdel Corollary'. Alas, Firefly is camp.

The diamond hard bedrock of content where the reality of the fiction cannot be rejected is going to be future based, and generally space based - domains that are undiscovered country and ripe with the unfalsifiable. Content based around vampires, zombies and the like does not lower the barriers to the reality of the fiction, because it is trivial to remind yourself that vampires and zombies are nonsense. They're falsifiable. Moving actresses of African American/other heritage up into roles in franchises whose internal reality cannot be easily rejected... is the way.

Kynes isn't really a character who's gender is essential to said character (and yes, those do exist in Dune). Plus the actress looks great here. So I'm fine with this.

I take that as an insult to Tom Bombadil, and I am offended.
