It?s your cruise director again! Shore Leave is coming, and, unlike Farpoint, no snow is expected. So if you?re looking for fun, come on by the Hunt Valley Marriot ? you probably won?t have to stay until Tuesday.

    shore-leave.com

Shore Leave is a Star Trek convention, basically, from July 11-13, in scenic Hunt Valley, Maryland ? this is near Cockeysville, and Timonium, and allegedly Baltimore. Sadly, Gimli had to cancel due to filming some low budget art film in New Zealand but there?s some Star Trek folks (Deanna Troi and Tasha Yar for example), some Stargate folks like Christopher Judge, Talia Winters from Babylon 5 (and from the ?Don?t Steal Cable? commercial! Comcast is Mother. Comcast is Father.) and the Beastmaster himself, Marc Singer. I am so hoping he'll say "I am Dar." at least once.

Registration is $50, and they do have day passes ? Saturday is $35, however, the website says they expect to sell out on Saturday so go early. I?m trying to find out what time registration opens on Saturday, but my best guess is early ? 9 am, maybe earlier. Give yourself 1 to 1/12 hours to get there from the DC area.

Here?s my disclaimer: I went last year and it was insanely crowded ? I never got into a single talk by a celeb because the rooms filled up and no one left. They had video feeds to other rooms, which was ok, but not the same as being there. I?m hoping that because they don?t have James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) it won?t be as nuts, or at the very least, they figured out how to manage crowds. I?m going again this year, so it couldn?t have been that bad!

James Marsters drew in all kinds of "mundane" folks - we actually met people who didn't know what stormtroopers were. Not just that they'd never heard of the 501st, but they'd never seen a stormtrooper at all. That's just wrong. I keep telling myself it'll be better this year with only real geeky guests. (Unless Andrea Thompson has some strange CNN or NYPD Blue groupies)

We'll be around all weekend so we should definitely hook up on Saturday.

In my dreams here, I have seen the destruction of the Jedi. The death of the Republic. I have seen the Temple in ruins, the Senate smashed, and Coruscant itself shattered by orbital bombardment from immense ships of impossible design. I have seen Coruscant, the seat of galactic culture, become a jungle far more hostile and alien than any on Haruun Kal.
I have seen the end of civilization.

Actually, it seems pretty average to me. Maybe those Trek stars cost a lot.

The red shirts are cheaper than the yellow or blue shirts, but who wants to see a red shirt?

What time do the doors open on Saturday?

I haven't been able to get an answer on when it opens on Saturday, but most programming begins around 9 am. Art show opens at 9 am.

Shoreleave was a blast. It's not restricted to Star Trek celebs. It was crowded but not as bad as last year. I attend every year. I am usually working in the dealer's room. It's expensive but worth it.

Perhaps by next year we'll be over the Farpoint 2003 trauma...
