I was just thinking while laying in bed this morning (yes, some odd thoughts can come to one there), are there any short-lived species in the Star Wars Galaxies? We have the kit and kaboodle of long-lived species, it seems, but are there any that would only live, say, a few short years before death?

And Rodians don't count. I'm curious about natural lives and most Rodians deaths (or so it seems) are most... unnatural.

    You'd think so.

On the evidence of an attested lower driving age for Biths, I'd argue they reach maturity faster and probably should have proportionally shorter lifespans.

Of course, such things can be slightly artificial - should we say the same for Mandalorians?

(a universal age of manhood seems rather humanocentric, on the face of it...or Taung-centric, whichever comes first)

But then, people seem to be assuming all races mature about as fast as humans - Lumpy's aging, for instance, even if they are of more long-lived race.

The apprenticeship age at the Jedi Temple also seems sillily universal in a diverse universe.

Is it a lower driving age on their world or across the galaxy?
Just because you're bar mitzvah'd at thirteen doesn't mean you can drive and buy cigarettes and liquor. Biological maturity is different from cultural adulthood.
Chewbacca was considered a youngin' at the age of 200 or so.
    It's probably not universal.

That leads me to wonder, if there were particularly short-lived species...would the Jedi even bother looking at them for recruits?

"Oh, no, we can't train that one. He's a Geezeronian. He'll only live for five years and wouldn't get very far in the training to begin with."

That applies more broadly to intelligence in general. A species has to have a long enough lifespan to learn stuff in order to have intelligence levels comparable to humans. Thus, extremely short lifespans are precluded.

^ It's also possible that a dumb species can be short lived, and still be above the level of sapience.

If memory serves, wasn't Lowie around 30 standard years when he went to the Jedi academy on Yavin?

An individual drone may have a short lifespan, but the Hive could effectively be immortal....

yes, a dumb species can be short lived and still above the level of sapience - but longer lifespans are usually accompanied by greater knowledge. Consider humans, a few centuries ago, 40 or 50 was considered old age - but as we get better and better medical technology the age that is considered 'old' is pushed back further and further...

True. Jsarek's post, however, seems to suggest that a species has to live at least as long as humans do to acheive intelligence levels comparable to humans. This is not necessarily true. Aptitude may not be a function of lifespan. It can be assumed a short lived species wouldn't acheive much in the way of invention, of course...

Technically speaking, I suppose, but for the sake of the discussion I meant more natural species that developed that way.

Lowbacca was 19 years old when he went to the Jedi Academy. He went there after fullfilling his Wookiee manhood ritual. 19 years old is a still very young for Wookiees.

I think these guys would probably count ranat. Granted it doesn't say anything about when they die of old age.

Really? I thought he was the Wookiee equivalent of ~16-19, which was somewhere around 80. Well, that's what I remember from the YJK series, anyway. Or was it from the Black Fleet Crisis and I'm thinking of Chewie's son?

Of course I have been known to be wrong. From time to time.

Star Wars seems to lack avian species. Wow, I overlooked this one, and they're rather interesting. Eh, the short lifespan seems to put people off, since the idea of a character not experiencing much galactic history is a rather disheartening. I keep imagining all my favorites living long and prospering, but eh it's rathe unrealistic for me to expect so...

I wonder why the Yuuzhan Vong live so long but are legal at age 16 :p
