Should I name my dog Obi-Wan or save it for a possible son?

My wife and I are probably getting a puppy this spring. We're considering naming it Obi-Wan, since I've always liked that name so much. Here's the issue though. My wife and I had already agreed to name our first born male child Obi-Wan so we're hesitant to also name this puppy Obi-Wan since it may cause some confusion for either the dog or child in certain situations. However, we really love the name and don't want to have to wait two or three years until we have a kid to use it. Additionally, what if we never have a son at all?

At the moment I'm leaning toward naming the dog Obi-Wan and dealing with the dog and child sharing the same name down the road, if ever. Any thoughts?

How about you use Obi-Wan for the dog and if you have a son call him "Ben"? That should eliminate any possible confusion.

I'd go with Ben too. Less chance of him turning up on "Oprah's Doctor Phil Get Real" segments, lamenting the fact he and his dog shared a Star Wars name.

No. I'd much rather use Obi-Wan. It's such a grand name after all. Ben is somewhat common.

If you like the name Obi Wan that much, I´d save it for your child. He´s your flesh and blood, the dog isn´t.

Save it for the son. Name the dog Indiana.

So, you're saying they shouldn't share the name? Perhaps I should name the dog Greedo instead.

The dog and the child shouldn't share the same name.

    Save it for the baby.

My dog is officially registered under the name obi-wan, so you'll just have to save it for your son.

But what if I never have a son? My wife could be infertile.

I wouldn't want to waste such a good name.

I'd still hold out for a possible conception by midichlorians.

It's not like it's an original name or anything. I actually think it's a bit tacky myself.

But think about the teasing your kid could potentially endure with a name like that. I'd go for naming him Ben, then Kenobi as a middle name.

Yes, adoption is a possibility. But the child in question would have to like Star Wars in order to appreciate his name.

My wife and I agreed that we're not going to be overly permissive parents. Sure, there's some types of mild rebellion that we can tolerate such as recreational drug use, promiscuous sex (for our sons only, of course!), and crazy music, but there are certain things that we simply will not tolerate - a child that doesn't respect and honor Star Wars is foremost on that list.

If we had a child that didn't love Star Wars and we couldn't fix the problem ourselves, you can bet we'd be seeking professional intervention.

    Teasing?

Perhaps. But doesn't this make you tougher though - sorta like the Johnny Cash song A boy named Sue?

No, teasing does not make you tougher. If you ask most people who were teased all their lives it just hurt them more than anything.

Then teach your son to use mind tricks or simply slice off the other person's arm with a lightsaber. All too easy.

Yes, my wife is a little concerned about potential teasing as well, since she was a victim herself once.

She wanted me to at least consider something a bit more obscure like Wedge, but when I agreed that she could name the girls, she consented.

I'm still considering Wedge for a second son though.

Naming your kid Obi-Wan is a sure-fire way to get him beaten repeatedly in Junior High.

kid named Obi-Wan = wedgie city
