What do you think? Would it have improved the future of the Revan character? Or is it better off that Revan is male in canon?

If you think Revan's character is better being male or female, please explain.

Im just curious on your opinions.

Well i do know that if Revan was female, then the relationship between bastila would go down the drain (unless Revan has moved away from the straight path....which could turn off some fans).

And im sure some could say that Revan's relationship between him and bastila improved both characters. So an argument could be made, that if Revan was female in canon...then that would have destroyed potential character development.

Although i have not read "Revan", i have been spoiled already, so if you want to, your free to talk about the book, if it helps to further your opinion on the topic here.

I think it would have been cool for Satele Onasi to the Jedi Grandmaster.

Bastila could have trained Revan and Carth's child.

    Everbody would have won.

Then again, I preferred male exile.

Revan being female and the Exile being male could have been interesting, though I'm not sure if I would have preferred it. I'm just glad they both weren't male.

I'd go as far to say that the cut dark!Revan/Carth ending should have been canon.

But, even if we go with a redeemed Revan... yeah, I'd rather he'd been a she.

What does light side female revan have over light side male revan? Why do you think that?

I don't really care about the character's gender insofar as it affects the story of the redeemed post-KotOR incarnation. I'd have preferred Revan to be female because we haven't exactly had a huge number of balls-to-the-walls powerful Sith Lords of that sex. Especially ones that not only wanted to conquer the galaxy but practically succeeded. I don't think we've had any of those.

And the central revelation works even better when you learn the "Lord Revan" you've been hearing about all this time was a woman.

You make a good point there. And i agree.

I don't mind seeing many evil sith as males....because it has some basis to real life. After all, most evil tyrants in the real world have been men. So i can see why star wars does the same thing.

So i can see why female revan is a welcomed change from the norm.

Revan being lightside male puts more value on the relationship with Bastila, which is a good thing, considering she is pretty much the main npc. Story-wise it seems to make the most sense to use that option, if you include the love-story. Take out romance and it doesn't really matter.

You don't really have that situation in TSL, with Kreia being the main npc. Nothing really changes how close you are to her, so the overall storyline isn't influenced by gender. I prefer Handmaiden to Disciple, but Sion's love for the female Exile is a nice twist as well.

I think the choices of ls/m Revan and ls/f Exile work pretty well. Don't like the fate they have chosen for them now, but that has nothing to do with this topic ;)

While LSM/Bas definitely feels the most like something straight out of Star Wars -- hell, it's "Anakin/Padme meets Han/Leia" -- I find Revan/Carth the more interesting of the two romances. Probably because it feels like less of a retread.

Not that MRev/Bas isn't a fairly good retread.

If Revan was female, it makes me think that the Exile would have been male. And I infinitely prefer that character as a woman if I had to choose only one.

Of course, they could have done a really great thing and made both Revan and the Exile female. [face_thinking]

I don't mind male Revan and female Exile. I do mind light side Revan, though. They throw away that wonderfully Shakespearean plot about reclaiming his throne and leave him a plaything of the Jedi. Lame. :p

Not to mention that Mission's death in the DS storyline is probably one of the most sadistic in the EU [face_batting]

Ya there are not that many romances out there between jedi and non-force sensitive people (i don't know if han and leia would fit that description, since she wasn't a jedi when they began there romance), so that could be a reason why a female revan would be better.

However since Carth is....normal. Then perhaps that is why the relationship between bastila and revan became the canon one.

I agree with this. You don't see very many female Sith Lords, and if they do exist, they are minor characters next to the major male big bads that are really running the show.

I think if there was a female Revan who got involved with Carth, that would be a way to highlight how much Revan was redeemed, as usually Sith Lords seem to regard non-sensitives as inferior. Plus she would have possibly been able to train Carth's son, as he would have needed a positive role model after all that Sith indoctrination. :p

But if they had to make Revan a male, I wish they went with one of the non-white faces at least. When they picked a black haired white male, I practically groaned. Why didn't they go with a black male or some other type face? They are even rarer then a female Sith Lord!

But for it to be Shakespearean wouldn't Revan have to be betrayed and killed by Bastila at the end of the game so he can give a dying soliloquy, "Et tu Bastila? I hath been betrayed once again by most loyal and beloved apprentice, I hath learned nothing. My life has been a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. I know see your words so true my old friend, as the darkness takes me I am nothing. Tell my story, tell it truly, the rest is silence."

Though I will admit if they had done that ending it would have been awesome to see Palpatine and Anakin go see a live performance of 'The Tragedy of Revan' at the Coruscant Theatre.

I was thinking more of Hamlet--and it's not necessary that it be a complete pastiche: after all, Simba doesn't die at the end of The Lion King.

I actually would like to see a Star Wars story based on Hamlet, it wouldn't really be that hard to do.

But on your point... Hamlet dies at the end though. And the Lion King analogy would hold except Simba didn't betray the lions and make himself Dark Lord of the hyenas. :p

You know, I'm less bothered about Revan and the Exile's gender than I am about their ethnicity. I'm actually kind of outraged that they both ended up being brown haired whites.:mad:

    ^ Most Awesome Revan ^

And I'd have infinitely preferred a black Exile.

    EDIT:
Though, as I've said before, if they want to retcon Revan into Nomi and Ulic's Rhen Var love-child, I will forgive them anything. Having the "uber" figure of KotOR descend from the main heroes of TotJ appeals to the part of me that likes the "generational saga" side of Star Wars. And Revan does go on to wear the Qel-Droma robes and remind Jolee of Nomi. [face_whistling]

As far as I'm concerned Revan is a girl, because that's how I've always played the game.

    Also, what Ulicus said:
I hadn't even considered the last point, but it's a really great one. I think it's safe we all assumed Revan was a guy, and that sort of revelation really turns that assumption on it's head.

What i think is a benefit to a female revan, is that it creates a romance between an all powerful jedi/former sith lord, and and just an average joe.

Carth represents the "common man", therefore imo its more interesting to see someone who does not have a lot of power, just a soldier, have a relationship with a jedi. I just think ive seen plenty of jedi with jedi romance in star wars. I like change sometimes.

Does anyone know why they decided to make Revan male in canon? Do they not have enough male evil sith? Or was it pressure by the fan base, for those who wanted revan to be male? I really don't know.

IMHO the Sith Lord that should have been female was Darth Tyranus.

It was most likely because at least 75% of the people who played KOTOR played as a male and so it just made sense to go with the majority. For KOTOR2, I think they had a bit more leeway in that the Exile was almost an apology (or consolation prize) to the female fans. This didn't really offend the male Exile players because they already got Revan.

That's just what I assume though. Could have been a coin flip I suppose.

Haha, you should have been around to witness all the male Exile fans who were so horribly, horribly offended that for once the canon meter swung female.

    Urg.

I remember it well. So. Much. Whining.

The only argument I could empathise with was the one revolving around Brianna > Mical (because she is)... but since the canon shortly went with "actually, both Brianna and Mical accompanied the Exile", that ceased to be relevant.

Obsidian's decision to mix up which characters the Exile received as companions based upon his/her gender was one of the few flubs I think they made on that title.
