http://www.nmlegis.gov/Sessions/13 Regular/bills/house/HB0048.pdf A State rep in my state says no. What do you think? It doesn't ban Facebook as Facebook has an e-mail component now. iMessage and AIM both have e-mails associated with them so I don't think they'd get banned. Personally I think it's ridiculous. Why shouldn't convicted sex offenders be able to Skype? Not all of them end up perpetrating again. And will this prevent any abuse? I doubt it. I use a free international calling app on my phone. This also would be banned for sex offenders as it doesn'r have an e-mail component.
It is ridiculous. But they shouldn't be able to do anything. Forbid them to eat, forbid them to sleep, forbid them to not get raped.
Don't you need to already know who you're trying to talk to to use Skype? It's not Chat Roulette where you talk to randoms. How is it any different than using a telephone? I have no problem with registered sex offenders using Skype to talk to their friends and family.
Well, the good news is that 'sex offender' is becoming such a broad term that soon we'll all be sex offenders.
The bill would ban sex offenders (rapists, not only child molestors) from using any chat program that allows minors to register for, regardless of whom they intend to speak to with the website.
But again, I ask, how is that different from using the telephone? You have to sign up and have somebody's screename or whatever to talk to them. You can't just talk to randoms without knowing their contact info, just like the telephone. Actually, it's HARDER than the telephone because I could dial random numbers to talk to a random on the phone but you can't do that with Skype as far as I know. I fail to see how this protects anyone from anything.
Ironically, it doesn't ban Facebook as Facebook has a proprietary e-mail system, and so does myspace, I think.
I don't think anyone should be allowed to Skype. Video conferencing/chats are an abomination of nature to begin with. You are all so very ugly and need to remain hidden. And then bad lighting and no makeup turns an already bad thing into a horrorshow.
FIDo is right, the term "sex offender" has gotten pretty broad . Even the worst types of offenders usually are not predators; I'd need to look up statistics but as I recall, most sex offenses are between two people who know each other. And the perverted prank phone calls from the days before caller ID were much worse than Skype; as PPs have said, with Skype you have to have contact information and you can actually see the person who is showing you their ****. With Skype there's really not a whole lot of danger of an 85-year-old ugly perv disguising himself as a hot 20-year-old when hitting on teenage girls.
first thing we need to do is change the meaning of what a sex offender is... a person who flashes children is labeled the same as a person who pee's in the back of a school while theyre drunk at 3am...
Should sex offenders have their thumbs cut off, among other body parts, so they can't use the Internet?

Get rid of the notification sound when someone is Skyping you. Good lord I hate the Skype ring when people are Skyping you especially at 2AM. Nightmare fuel.
