I think we should because although I believe in God if you look at it from the view of those who don't believe's eyes then it's just having respect for our country and if you can't say the pledge then your not giving all your respect that you need for our country. What do you think?

It's not being able to say it . . . but having the recital of the Pledge as school policy. That's the issue. There are some parties who feel that if the schools, which are funded by the Congress, are sponsering religion because it has the word God in it.

    Translation of the first post:

I think we should be allowed to recite the Pledge. Although I believe in God, if you look at it from the view of those who don't believe, then it is merely showing respect for our country. If you can't say the Pledge, then you are disrespecting your country. What do you think?

I think people should be allowed to say it, but I don't think you should be required to say it. What will they do? Punnish us if we don't say it? Give us detention? Suspend us? Bring it on. I'm perfectly willing to use civil disobediance to show just how stupid the very idea of punnishing someone for not saying a few words is. I will not pledge allegance to a country I do not entirely believe in. I respect the US, but I do not pledge allegance to the flag of the United States of America, thank you very much. You can't force words out of my mouth, and, the way I see it, trying to do so would be plainly un-American.

I don't want a single kid in this country having to recite the Pledge... :p

Then again, it wouldn't make sense here... :D

If student were to swear allegiance to the Nation, without having to throw religion (of any kind) into that "allegiance", then I am (and always have been) for it... although, truth be told, I always thought it was pretty corny to have to stand up every morning and pledge allegiance to a country in which you lived. I mean, c'mon, like it really means something to the countless thousands who drone out the words in half-hearted sleepiness 5 days a week. And what happened if you didn't pledge allegiance? Back in my day, nothing. But today, you're labelled anti-American. That could be dangerous.

I think if you need to recite the pledge to show respect for your country, you need your head examined. Basically because a country should be respected for what it does, it has to be earned, not enforced. Now, I have a little respect for America, but not enough to say I respect it. I disagree with a lot of their policies, and the mentality of a majority of Americans.

When I wa a kid and was living in the US for a few years, whenever the did the pledge, I never got up. I stayed seated and let my eyes wander around.

Not because of the word G-d, but because I am not going to pledge alligence to this country. It's not my country and besides, my only loyalty is to my family, friends and loved ones. Not a piece of land, whether it be my own country or this country.

Same for the national anthem. I never rised for it.

I don't do that for my country, not gonna do it for another.

So we should have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in order to... pledge our allegiance? That doesn't really answer the question of "why", now does it?

It goes against the very soul of America to FORCE someone to recite a pledge of allegiance.

And you know what I heard? That the ORIGINAL pledge never had any metion of god, that one line was just added in during the Eisenhower administration.

Can I get a confirmation or denial on this?

It goes against the very soul of America to FORCE someone to recite a pledge of allegiance.

I think we are beginning to see the true colors of America's "soul", and sadly it's not what it professes (nor was it ever, really).

And you know what I heard? That the ORIGINAL pledge never had any metion of god, that one line was just added in during the Eisenhower administration.

This is fact. The term "under God" was not added to the Pledge until the 1950's, in the wake of the "godless communism" scare.

I've never said a pledge of allegience to my country in my life - does that mean I have no respect for my country, or that I am against my country? No, it doesn't. I don't understand America sometimes...

Yes it does mean you have no respect for America and that you are against the flag for which it stands.

    That's a load of crock.

Tell me one good reason why I had to say the pledge?

    Hmm?

One good reason that you should say the pledge is to honor the men and women who died for our country cause if they didnt fight for us then this country wouldnt be free and people with sorry butts would be glad that we werent free.
