In the Galaxy far far away, I doesn?t seem as if Skirts exist. Females either are dressed in full dresses or pants/trousers/slacks whatever you call them. For men too Kilts, various form of leg dress, which while may not be good is space may be big on planetary environments. Yes this is a bit of a brain fart, and it doesn?t really effect story, but it?s something that is rather noticeable, especially since clothing is so diverse on our one planet. It's just something I have noticed.
That's an interesting observation. I can't think of many counter examples offhand, but I'm pretty sure there have been some female Republic/Imperial officers seen wearing skirts...I'd be surprised if there weren't some retro space skirts in Russ Manning's comic strips as well. Since Star Wars is a space fantasy that draws primarily on the past for its design inspiration, it's not too surprising that robes, cloaks, space western pants, leggings, and dresses outnumber things that can be seen as more contemporary, like skirts. That said, the fifties-inspired decor of Dex's Diner is said to be of the Med'soto style that had been popular at some point in the Republic...the matching waitress droid appears to have details that are skirt-like, so one could assume that skirts were in vogue in the GFFA during that time. (Speaking of which, a Med'soto era story might be visually interesting...definitely a switch from the other "ancient" styles we've seen so far.) TC
The women on Tatooine seem to wear skirts. Camie does (in the scene that was cut out from ANH) and so does young Beru, at least in Episode II. I'm not sure about ROTS but I think she does there too. But it's also pretty clear that the dress combinations they wear is nothing near to fancy. On Coruscant, it would probably be a one season thing only - just like when everyone in Paris, Milan or NY dress up like phesant girls. What has amused me about SW though, is the is a tendency towards medieval clothing; tunic and tights/tight trousers. Luke's original Jedi robes is a perfect example (the later official Jedi outfit is more orientally inspired).
A critical skirt shortage, you say? That's 'cause they're always doffing them at the slightest provocation...
well, skirts exist in the GFFA and lots of them do... do you mean just skirts or also count females dresses, gowns etc. that contain a skirt attached to it permanently. many comic images show skirts. true, uniformed females and pilots rarely feature skirts as we get those most often, but still we have large amounts of skirts in the EU as a whole. -Nomi Sunrider had skirts sometimes -many backgroundcharacters feature them in bars, cantinas or celebrations -Zeltrons have skirts -Tenel Ka had skirts made of animal skin but was not pictured with those costume variants -Marvel comics featured quite a lot 50s and 60s style skirts on Leia and a few other females -do Alien species count? some wear primitive ritual skirts -many dancers wear skirts in Hutt throne rooms and even in The Clone Wars they were spotted my favourite example: Vector Prime: Jacen Solo in a pink miniskirt from the Yuuzhan Vong while Danni only wore the pink top over her chest when they cuddled in the ice drill to escape imagine the scene visually please!
Female Imperial officers do occasionally wear skirts, yes. [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/grandadmiraljello/imperialwomen.png]
Both Yuuzhan Vong males and Falanassi females have been known to wear relatively short sarongs. Does that answer your question? - The Imperial Ewok
