Danm, thats harsh. I remember things like this always confused me as to weather or not the people in STAR WARS were human with natural human life-spans. Yoda is 800, Chewie 400 or so, and now, 3po says the HUMAN heroes will be digested for over a thousand years. Maybe Lucas loves ridiculous numbers. I mean, the Sith being extinct for a millinia is putting it on pretty thick. Palpatine live for that long? I dunno. But the Sarlaac statement suggest the heroes will be alive for that long as indicated by "pain and suffering".

So, do the humans live incredibly long lives- or does the Sarlaac have some sort of enzime that preserves the body and keeps it alive and nurished at the same time digesting it? The whole idea is sickning if you imagine the meaty gobs of people moaning while stuck together in there. Is there any E.U. on this? I know the Sarlacc spits Boba out, but whats up with the Thousand-year suffering plan by Sarlaac INC.?

I forgot his exact age but Palpatine was around 86 years old in ROTJ.

And the sarlac does keep its victim alive for a long period of time but nowhere close to 1000 years.

I assume that they wouldn't last/live for the 1000 years but their body parts would take 1000 years to digest.

Yeah, Jabba never said they'd be alive for one thousand years and it always could've been a figure of speech. ;)

I think it was more of a threat on Jabba's part or maybe it was Threepio overreacting. That droid has been known for stretching the truth and making things worse than what they are. ;)

Still...interesting question. Even if Jabba was using the 1000 year thing as a threat, it is still suggested that the Sarlaac keeps its victims alive longer than their normal life span. But how much longer...

Who ever said Palpatine was that old?

As for the sarlacc, I always took it to mean that the sarlacc somehow kept its victims alive while it digested them.

Its kind of like chewing gum taking 7 years to digest and move through and out of your system. Not sure if that's true or just a rumor.

GL's not one to spare us from the numerical hyperbole, eh? 1000 years this, a millenium that.

Oh, and the seven year chewing gum thing is an old wive's tale. Here's the Snopes page debunking it.

The EU explains the Sarlacc sorta merges metabolisms with it's victim, so it can both sustain them and feed off of them over a long period of time, though you certainly wouldn't still be alive for that whole thousand years.

Here's a question. How would Jabba know that it takes 1000 years to digest its victim? It's not like anyone survived to tell the tale (apart from Boba Fett that is, who, contrary to what NeoBaggins says, was not spat out by the Sarlacc. He blew a hole in its side with his grenades and crawled out) but he was only in for a few days (weeks?), not a thousand years.

    He's dead.

Anyway, it's a terrible thought, one thousand years of pain. I remember someone once posted, asking what would happen if Jabba fell in the Sarlac! LOL That is something I would love to see.

He's not dead, well he can be dead to you if you want, but to me, he escaped. He wasn't chewed and he has a jet pack, which is not broke, it was set off, doesn't mean it was broken. If Fett has a thousand years to use all his gadgets and jet pack to easily escape. Besides in the commentary Lucas says 'most people didn't think he died anyway' he could likely be one of 'em.

Baggins is correct. Fett actually fell into the sarlacc numerous times in the EU (which sucks). One time he blew himself an exit and another he was spat out (probably because it remembered Fett).

Anyways, I'd imagine that they'd be alive for a human's full, natural life and then pass on due to old age, while the nutrients are slowly absorbed for a thousand years.

I tend to ignore the "spat out" part whenever I see it because I simply don't see it as canon.

Fett died in rotj....no blasting through the sarlac and nursing back to health by dengar.

    According to DataBank...

"According to lore, the stomach pit of the Sarlacc keeps its prey alive for a thousand years, slowly dissolving its meal into needed nutrients, while the hapless victim is kept alive in searing, endless agony."

Then the EU part in the databank....

"The fanciful tale of a "thousand year" torment inside the Sarlacc's digestive system may be more fact than fiction, however. Evidence exists of a fibrous network of vessels that attach themselves to a swallowed victim, grotesquely incorporating the being into the Sarlacc's own biological system."

I think this compares as a good metaphor to the Republic.
The citizens of the galaxy were very slowly digested for a thousand years under the Republic. Corruption, weakness, abuse of power...all leading the the gradual decay of the galaxy.
Then again the empire was far worse.
I digress, I just saw the thousand years and I thought a bit of the comparision.

This is what the Databank says in the EU section about Fett:

"Fett's armor and body were extremely battered by his ordeal in the Sarlacc. When he plunged into the beast, he was kept alive by numerous fibrous suckers that attached themselves to his body. This was part of the Sarlacc's horrible metabolic process; it would keep its prey alive for thousands of years, all the while slowly feeding off it. Fett almost lost his identity in the swirling dementia brought about by the Sarlacc's toxins. His resolve held, and he used his weapons to blast free of the beast.

Naked, wounded, and defenseless on the sands of Tatooine, Fett was rescued by his fellow hunter Dengar, who nursed him back to health. Fett reclaimed his armor and his reputation, returning from the "dead," and again taking on bounties. It wasn't until six years after the Battle of Endor that Han Solo learned his nemesis was still alive. Although Fett still piloted his antiquated Slave I, he updated his arsenal with the ultrasleek Slave II. These were but the first two of his vessels, which would eventually number up to Slave IV."

(Mods I'm not trying to force him to believe this and use the EU I'm just trying to point out the Databank says this)

I've always thought the thousand-year digestion thing came about becuase a long time ago someone (a very brave someone) got a hold of some of the Sarlacc's digestive acids and it was left in a lab for a thousand years with something to digest, and that's how they know.

" I tend to ignore the "spat out" part whenever I see it because I simply don't see it as canon."

So why do you see him "blasting out" with a grenade as canon?

Me-"I mean, the Sith being extinct for a millinia is putting it on pretty thick. Palpatine live for that long?"

"Who ever said Palpatine was that old?"

Your answering my question with my own question?

Absydian-"According to lore, the stomach pit of the Sarlacc keeps its prey alive for a thousand years, slowly dissolving its meal into needed nutrients, while the hapless victim is kept alive in searing, endless agony."

That would make 3po's translation of what Jabba said make sense. Well, as much sense as something in STAR WARS could make anyway. I always thought that was a horrible fate. Its like HELL. I would hope that even Jabba would have the Ganster class to reserve such a fate for high offenders of his reputation- but his knowledge of the Sarlaac points to many visits. And if so, where the ones thrown in deservant by great offenses, or was he just Sarlaac happy at the slightest short-coming?

Jabba may be obsessed by his own hungar and greed. He may enjoy seeing these monsters devour people in admiration. He gets off on watching the Rancor eat people, and when its really time to celebrate, off to the Sarlaac.

Either way, the Sarlaac is a horrible fate. Im suprised George didnt let Jabba fall in some how for the ultimate irony. Or maybe being killed by a female slave after killing one was the more ironic death. He had them on leashes and he was choked to death by one. And The Sarlaac might have thrown up.

    >>Here's a question. How would Jabba know that it takes 1000 years to digest its victim?<<

There's likely been some xenobiologist who has studied the species and was able to extrapolate how long it would take for it's digestive acids to wear away the typical humanoid.

Either that, or perhaps, over the dozens of thousand years of recorded SW history, there's actually been someone/thing who bothered to actually track such a thing ("I'm not going near that sarlacc...send the droid." ;) )

    >>what would happen if Jabba fell in the Sarlac! LOL That is something I would love to see.<<

I believe this happened to a Hutt (Zorba?) in the EU- the sarlacc spat him out (obviously, some jawas must have gotten him confused with Fett, since Fett only had to escape once ;) )

I just assumed it was something along the lines of a myth. No one could really know that it would take 1000 years to digest one victim unless you had generations of people checking up on said victim and somehow avoiding becoming one themselves. Jabba had shown himself to be a master of hyperbole and this is just another example of it.

Because that's actually been written in a decent EU source, unlike Jawas of Doom which needs to be declared Infinities.

Wow! Theres actually rank within the non-canon stuff? Thats pretty funny considering its ALL E.U.

If "infinities" can be discredited by a higher E.U. source, then surely FanFiction is the lowest form on the food chain.
