Okay, maybe not "=" but after watching season 1 of Smallville over the last 3 nights, I noticed some huge similarities.

The main character is a super-strong, super-hero type person with secrets from most of the people they know (of course the difference being Clark's parents are the only ones who know and Buffy's mom is one of the only people close to her that doesnt' know).

They both take place in fictional towns that have names derived from cliches about the real-life state where they're located, and make reference to real cities that are supposed to be nearby.

Both have all sorts of weird things happening because of the town they are located in. Buffy has demons, evil, people getting weird abilities, and magic stuff happening all the time because they're located on the hellmouth. Smallville has people getting weird abilities and all sorts of strange stuff happening because they're located where all the kryptonite meteors landed.

Both have villains who we actually like for one reason or another (spike & lex).

not to mention that a lot of the stories kinda seem like they could take place in either buffy or smallville (the bugboy episode of smallville comes to mind).

okay okay okay, so I'm sure the same similarities could probably be found in most superhero shows, but I just got done w/ smallville and it kinda stood out in my mind...

    discuss?

    MAJOR DIFFERENCE:

I would do Buffy, but not Clark.

    :D

But yeah, it IS weird how all that totally WEIRD stuff happens, and the rest of the world is completely oblivious in both shows.

Very similar, except Smallville seems kinda like the Diet Coke of Buffy.

Buffy always had something dark and evil lurking around eating people or possessing their souls. I can get into that. Smallville just seems "weird" -- not "uber creepy weird."

The atmosphere in Buffy was always dark and creepy, too. They get that going in Angel, but my intense hatred of that whiney kid with the big mouth that tags along everywhere prevents me from watching it.

Although, oddly 'nuff, I used to enjoy "Lois and Clark" when it was on. It was almost funny.

I dunno. That kid in Angel -- the whiney one with the big mouth. :D I think he's supposed to be Angel's son or something.

Oh yeah, I definitely recommend Smallville. I watched it faster than I've watched a single season of ANY other tv show. very addictive IMO.

TK: the appeal for Smallville comes from a different place than Buffy though... Smallville's catch is that we're seeing Superman as a teenager going through high school as an everyday normal kid. And you get to imagine what it's like to be a superpowered high school kid...which was I'm sure a lot of our dreams when we were in HS (I'd have loved to have had super powers for so many different reasons in HS).

Heck...while we were growing up? I'm STILL trying to figure out how to sneak a spider into a radiation test facility of some sorts.

    :)

Careful TK, for those that are only followin' Angel via DVD, that might constitute a pretty heavy duty SPOILER.

But yeah, I know whatcha mean. Annoying kid. Annoying-er mouth...

Um, the differece, Buffy was a highly original show, i'd really never seen (or mostly heard diaglog) anything like it before on TV.

Smallville from the first time I saw it felt like a conglomeration of WB shows, i've never felt an original character moment or piece of dialog from it. When I first saw the commercials for it, the first thing that popped into my head was it should have been titled:

    Buffy's Roswell Creek.

notice that the title is Smallville = Buffy, not Buffy = Smallville. Buffy came first after all, so smallville would be the ripoff ;)

Hey, I liked Roswell. The first season anyways. As for Buffy, there are a ton of shows in Smallville in the first season that reminds me of Buffy. Glad to see you're not angry about the lake anymore JD!

lol, I won't be angry about it until I see the episode again...then I'll be ranting some more, don't you worry.

can someone explain to me the deal w/ Smallville, Metropolis? Is it supposed to be like Metropolis replaces Kansas City or something? And if Smallville is supposed to be about 3 hours away, there's no way in HELL they are seeing Metropolis from the top of that windmill...

i need to find like a map of the DC world that shows where all the cities are...

also, I used to always think from the movies & Lois & Clark series that metropolis was supposed to be like New York or over on the coast somewhere (especially from when he had to stop the tsunami in lois and clark).

Plus the fact that Metropolis has a harbor. I don't know of any place in Kansas that has a harbor within three hours driving distance. :D

Well, according to the Atlas of the DC Universe, Smallville is located here.

Whereas, Metropolis is located here .

I always felt that "Metropolis" was pretty much NYC, at least in the books.

As far as Smallville goes, if it's in Kansas, does it really matter where?

lol, even so, Smallville is closer to Wichita than KC which is kinda were the show makes it sound like it would be.

The Metropolis on that atlas is a hell of a lot farther than a 3-hour drive.

lol, according to that site... Topeka, Ks. - Topeka was recently destroyed by Imperiex

TOPEKA IS GONE?!?! WE HAVE NO CAPITOL LEFT!!!
