perhaps i really am the most gullible person ever, but the first time i saw TPM i was genuinely shocked to learn that Queen Amidala and Padme were the same person! [face_shocked]

Did any of you also fall for the ol' decoy trick? Even if it was just for a minute or two? And for those of you who figured it out before the secret was revealed- what gave it away?

Simple, Natalie Portman's beauty cannot be matched or duplicated. "THAT'S NOT NATALIE!!!!" *runs out of theater crying and pulling hair*

I wasn't fooled simply because I knew Natalie Portman played Amidala, so then when I saw Natalie Portman being Padme, I figured something was up.

Maybe the trick would have worked better if the actress hadn't been someone sorta famous. :(

What I did NOT know was that Sabe wasn't played by Natalie Portman. THAT threw me. Slap that makeup on Keira Knightley and she's a dead-ringer.

    Rick McCallum loves you!

She fooled me. In fact, I got really confused before the movie came out when I saw a spoiler-ific timeline for the prequels that mentioned that Anakin would marry Amidala, and then I started watching the movie and Anakin had several sweet scenes with Padme ("Are you an angel?" "My caring for you will remain.") and I was going, "WT...? Aren't they at least going to show some development between him and the Queen if they're supposed to get married eventually?"

I was fooled by it... in fact... I made excuses for what I percieved to be a continuity error because of it. :D

(I wondered how she changed her clothes so fast! One scene Amidala's looking out the window with that Christmas-tree light outfit, the next she's in that black outfit)

When I watch it now, it just looks so obvious that I don't understand how anyone was fooled by it.

I was fooled. I knew going into the movie that Natalie was playing "the Queen." So, when I saw her pop up as "the Handmaiden," I thought to myself, "Huh!?" I then rationalized the seeming dissonance as my having just heard wrong and Natalie really wasn't playing "the Queen."

    I was fooled until Jar Jar Binks came back from the Gungan City and you can see the fake Queen in the background. I knew there was something up, so then I believed there was a decoy. The next scene proved me right! 8-}

I honestly can't remember [face_blush] . Probably that means I was completely fooled, but I really can't recall one way or the other. D'oh! I'm getting old. :(

I was fooled. I knew that Natalie was the Queen, and I knew that Padme was obviously Natalie, but if Mike Meyers can play 4 different characters in a movie then Natalie can play two. However, in the Gungan Sacred place where she steps forward I remember thinking, 'Need to teach the Handmaiden where her place is'. But then she confessed I was all [face_shocked] [face_blush] well duh, of course, I knew that.

I knew Anakin and Amidala were supposed to become an item at some point, but I'd only heard that through rumors. So when Anakin started basically hitting on Padme, I figured the rumors were wrong. Then, during the Tatooine sequences when Padme kept saying the queen didn't approve of this or that, and that Qui-Gon assumed too much, I was like, "Ohhhh...I see." So when she revealed herself as being the queen to Boss Nass, I was like, "Uh-huh. Yup. Figured."

Yeah, there are shots as well where the "Queen's" face is not the central focus, even though she's talking. The camera is on Padme at those times.

I was fooled. I always get fooled by that sort of things in movies!
I knew Natalie Portman played Amidala, but I had only seen her in The Professional before and that was LONG before, so I didn´t really remember what she was like. I think she was unknown enough to fool the audience(me at least)!
My brother, though, whispered to me "I think she is the Queen" already on Tatooine, before the pod race! I got a little frustrated by that, because I don´t like having things pointed out for me like that. I guess I forgot about it during the following action scenes, though :)

I can't remember really but I suppose I knew it quite early, after the "to us all". Im sure there were plenty of people who were fooled, but I also think GL wanted to hint it anyway.

Not all the time but, Keira Knightley looks enough like Natalie Portman to fool me in lots of scenes. I feel that Knightley did a great job. I wish she had been in AOTC.

    Lond live the Queen! :)

    Yes, she fooled me.

For my defense, I should say that I didn't know Natalie Portman at the time I saw the movie, and, moreover, I'm partially face blind...

It fooled me. Then when I saw the movie again the hints were so obvious that I felt a little silly having been fooled the first time.

Well, no. I was actually so confused about it all.

You see, I never caught the bit where Panaka tells Qui-Gon that the "handmaiden" wishes to go with him. I thought he said "The Queen wishes to go" or something. So, I naturally thought that Padme WAS the Queen in disguise, but everybody already knew it.

Of course I must have been stupid the rest of the film when Padme and the Queen where in the same scenes. Sigh.

Um, he-heh, no. I wasn't spoiled or anything it was just . . . pretty obvious to me. I'm not bragging or anything, I was just the complete opposite thats all. Throughout that whole segement I was thinking, " . . . wait Qui-Gon knows thats the Queen, right? I mean he's a Jedi for chrissakes, he's gotta know. Right?"

    :p

Honestly, when I first saw TPM four years ago, I didn't know that she was the queen. The way the make up was done on their faces totally hid it from me. I didn't know Queen Amidala was Padme at first.
