My 2 bottom teeth were impacted, and all 4 of them needed to be taken out today. After I woke up from the operation, I was sitting in the "recovery room", and couldnt feel my tounge, or anything below that on my head... So I couldn't feel either my bottom lip, or chin. After lying down there for about 10 minutes, we left.

We stopped at Arbys and picked up some food (The doctor told me to have a large meal afterwards), but I decided to wait until the numbness went away... Its an hours ride home from where we were, and about 15 minutes away from home the novacaine started wearing off and it started to hurt. This is where both my mom and I get pissed. We go to the pharmacy that they were SUPPOSED to send the pain medication to, and they didnt have it. After about 2 phone calls from there, they found out that it was sent to another pharmacy in town... So we got there, and had to wait a long time to get it. We ended up getting the medication an hour after we were supposed to. My mouth started to bleed more than it was before, and seemed like it was swelling. That, combined with the pain, made it very hard for me to eat (it says you should take the medication with a full stomach.

This is where it gets gross.... So don't read it if you are skwirmish.

This large glob of flesh is coming out/forming on the left side of the inside of my mouth... I'm not even sure its flesh though... Its also bleeding a lot right in that area (although the bleeding seems to be slowing down now).

Wait, this just in! My mom just got off the phone with the office who did it (which would be the second call to them... the first was giving them hell about the medication :p ), and he said it was a blood clot. So I washed my mouth out and pulled it out with a tissue... Also, I'm starting to get back the feeling in my tounge and bottom lip. He said I have to eat or I'll get real sick from the medication, and it wont work. So here I am pigging out on my huge Arbys meal :p.

Anybody else got stories of their wisdom teeth getting pulled?

    Heh, I know the feeling.

I had all four of mine taken out, plus four bicuspids all at the same time two years ago. The wisdom teeth were under the gums, so they had to do a surgery to get them out. Aside from lots of blood and anesthetic that made me say crazy things, it wasn't all that bad. By that evening I was pretty normal again. :)

Edit: The blood clot forms when you don't keep the gauze in place properly. It's weird how he told you to eat a big meal... I used to be a dental assistant. You're not supposed to eat immediately following the operation because you risk biting your tongue or lip due to the anesthetic. The best thing would be a shake, which would keep the swelling down and help minimize bleeding. They're also easier to drink after having teeth removed. However, you don't want to suck on a straw too hard or you'll start bleeding even more.

    ..wow, that's a wild story..

My tale of Wisdom teeth removal:

I was lying there in the operating room, hooked up to a heart monitor, having just been given the shot that would knock me out.

Suddenly, i have 5 nurses standing around me, gushing over 'what an incredible athlete's heart' i had. Apparently, i had a strong impressive heart beat. Well, i was doped beyond belief, and thus started lying in every which way i could to impress these ladies :p

Next thing i remember was waking up in the recovery room. I opened my eyes, and the room was spinning. I closed one eye, and the room stopped spinning. So for the next hour, everything i did, i did with one eye open. The nurses thought this was hilarious and started calling me 'Blinky'. When my mom finally showed up to pick me up, i had 10 nurses come out to say goodbye (best day ever :p).

I then passed out in the car on the way home.

However, the day i had my wisdom teeth out was ALSO the day that the original "Batman: The Animated Series" was premiering (to give you an idea of the timeframe :p), so i dragged myself out of bed in order to watch it.

Then i ate alot of pudding for the next couple of days (i'm surprised you were actually eating meals. I wasn't allowed to eat anything substantial until my cuts had healed. I also had to clean them out regularly with a syringe filled with water. That was fun.)

    BAD update :(

It appears some of the stitches in my left side came out :(. when you look at it with a flashlight, it appears to be open in a spot when compared to the other side. I felt like I was getting another blood clot (turned out it was the skin on the inside of my mouth I must have been biting on or something... its all messed up now). My mom just got home with gauze for me to put on the bleeding, and I have an ice pack on the side of my face. Its so bad I cant even close my mouth right now :(... More updates coming soon.

On a positive note though, I got 3 new issues of JLA: Pain of the Gods that I was missing, and 2 comic book storage boxes before i went for the opperation. Also, when I got home I found the Airsoft gun that I ordered sitting on my doorstep :)

They should have given you plenty of gauze when you left the office... and they should have told you how and what to eat. It doesn't seem like they did, which is surprising.

What kind of dentist did you go to? Was it a specialist who performed a maxilofacial procedure or a general dentistry practitioner?

Aww...wow, that sucks! Probably from eating that Arby's meal! I can't believe the doc told you to do that.

I'm sure you'll be right as rain soon though. :)

I loved my wisdom teeth experience.

First of all, I only had three somehow. I was afraid of saying something stupid when I woke up after the surgery, but I made a very logical statement: "The light looks like an apple." :p Then, as my mom helps me into the truck from the wheelchair, I lean over to turn on the radio...and can't stop leaning! I flop right onto the driver's side seat! Finally, when we get home, my mom tells me to not jump up and down. Now, keep in mind I was still under the influence, but I proceeded to jump like a kangaroo right there! I'm not kidding!

The story ends peaceably enough. I spent a week laying in bed on an ice pack playing nintendo.

    Hope your recovery goes well!

Hehe, I will be sooo embarassed when I get mine done. :(

IF I hafta get them done.

Anyways, I had a friend who had his out this summer and he said he hit on all the nurses while he was under the influence. And the really scary part was they were all middle aged and ugly.

he said he hit on all the nurses while he was under the influence

Yeah, I was afraid of that too, especially since my mother was in the room the whole time. She never said one way or the other, and I never asked!

    Wow. That stinks!

All I know is that after I "woke up" from the anesthesia, I didn't really wake up. I mean, I don't remember anything, except that suddenly I was in the car, I had turned the CD (Abbey Road) to "Octopus's Garden", and I was singing away, with my mouth stuffed full of gauze. I wish I had seen it...it would have been hilarious to watch. I fell asleep at home, and when I woke up my mom was in the other room. Because my mouth was so full of gauze, I wrote her a note. Except, I didn't write it in English! I wrote in Spanish! And it's not like I'm fluent or anything! I had only taken Spanish 1! But I asked her for water and some other things with perfect spelling and grammar. A couple days later my face bruised, and swelled up, it was great. :D

But your story is way better.

My experience wasn't nearly so bad. I just kept myself really dosed up on painkillers and sat and watched TV for a week. The stitches really bugged me when they started to fall out, but that's the most unpleasant things got - other than the pain.

It was a specialist. They did mention something about me not needing gaize before the opperation, but that as I was being put under so its all really a blur. My mom picked some up and I have it in my mouth now, while also holding an ice pack to the side of my face. As for eating, they told me to have a good meal to go with the medicine so it would work. I only got to finsh my large order of motzerella sticks though because of the pain... I still have 2 roast beef sanswhiches, and a small order of curly fries waiting for me. They went over how I shouldn't use a straw, and how I shouldnt suck on anythin (Yes... I know what I just typed so don't bother making a joke about it :p) period. Also, to not have a "Jello and ice cream diet", since I should be eating real food. It hurts to swallow now :(

Yeah... I doubt those motz sticks really helped my mouth much... Thanks for the nice words though BTW :)

Ok.... I just had a large chocolat shake (I drank it out of the cup... not through a straw). That didn't help at ALL. Seems to have made it worse now that both sides of my mouth are hurting... and I still can't close it. Another hour and 20 minutes and I can take more pain medication though... Hopefully it will actually work this time.

Hey, they put you under and told you to eat solids!

All I got was some morphine and a few Novocain (or something of that matter) injections in my mouth. Even though I was dazed, I can still remember the operation in its entirety. Along with the fact I was bleeding for eight hours afterwards, so chocolate milkshakes were my diet for the remainder of the day.

Lesson learned: Tylenol Three is an effective painkiller, but should be taken with food.

Oh, and watch the Food Network religiously afterwards, you can almost taste the food through your television. :p

    Thanks for the support, guys.

Small update: The pain medicine worked... It didn't work great, but it worked. I've been spending my evening thus far either lying on my bed with a cold pack against my face, or watching a DVD... With an ice pack on my face (The DVD was "The Punisher for those who are interested... I was about to put Daredevil in, but then I remembered the part when he pulled his tooth right out of his gums when he was in the shower [face_plain] ).

Its 11 o'clock now, so I just took another pain pill... along with the anibiotic (sp?) that I'm required to take 4 times a day.... Oh, and I still can't move my jaw. When I need to talk, it requires only moving my lips... Its tricky, and I'm sure I sound incredibly stupid. Oh well... at least the bleeding stopped. Looks like I'll skip school tomarrow too.
