So if Jedi's aren't allowed to love, how do they reproduce more Jedi's?

So after all the Jedi's get killed in Episode 3, theres about 5 people in the story that can use the force. High medichlorian counts or whatever clearly run in the Skywalker family. After all, both of Anakin's offspring have it. So clearly, it is something that gets passed down. Qui Gon took an interest in who Anakin's father was. But in Attack of the Clones they state that Jedi's aren't supposed to fall in love, so how are more Jedi's made? Now surely it could be possible that is isn't passed down and just some people have it and some don't but that kind of contradicts Luke, the new hope, being the only one left who knows how to use it. It is getting late so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

Well, reading some of the posts in the Saga forum leads one to believe that Jedi can reproduce, but not have attatchments. This would mean that two Jedi could have sex if only for the purpose of strengthening the Jedi order. That's just my opinion, anyway.

I am inclined to suspect that force sensitivity is like a recessive gene, it can be carried through several generations without manifesting itself. Hence, it would be possible for two non-force users or a force user and non-force user to have a force-sensitive child

The way I always looked at it was that force-sensitive folks are just part of the general population (Qui-Gon's line "If he'd been born in the Republic, we would have identified him".) All Jedi are force-sensitive, but not all force-sensitive people become Jedi. A Jedi is something you train to become, not something you are born as.

They aren't forbidden from procreating, but they are supposed to do it without fomrming attatchments. Ki-Adi-Mundi for example has several children from several wives.

They would probably frown on this until they have passed the trials, but it isn't out of the question entirely.

Exactly. Luke and Leia are one of the few Jedi whose father/mother is a Jedi as well.

I always thought that Force sensitivity was an unusual trait, like genius-level intelligence, that can be the result of heredity, but sometimes comes out of nowhere (seemingly).

Besides which, not every Force-sensitive becomes a Jedi, or can become a Jedi. I'm betting there are many people in the GFFA who have some Force sensitivity, just a little of it, and pass it down through the generations until someone with Jedi-level Force sensitivity is born.

So, Padme becomes a Jedi in EIII? :(

They find civilians who have a high midichlorian count.

I have the same viewpoint as Shelley on this. Force-sensitivity is something that would seem to come up randomly, and have no apparent connection to one's parents.

but the force runs strong in the skywalker family, what evidence do you have that this case is not ordinary?

Well, like Lucas said, Jedi don't have to be celibate, either.

And I'd be willing to bet that while yeah, Force-sensitivity could run in the family, not every child is Force sensitive (the EU has expanded on this), and probably NOT all parents agree to give up their children for training anyways.

I'm guessing there are some families who are prone to it, but are only a tiny bit sensitive. Every once in a while one child will have The Gift.

I don't think it's like in Harry Potter though, where almost all the children of Wizards and Witches are Wizards and Witches. Well, except for the occasional squib, like Filch and Mrs. Finch.

I love the idea that the Jedi are permitted to have sex, just not to have attachments. Lol. Sounds like an extended Spring Break!!

If Force Sensitivity is just a product of random genetic order, then there would NEVER be a reason to believe the Jedi could be ?wiped out.? The Jedi should know once the purge starts that if they hide out and lay low, there will be other high midi people whom they could train as Jedi and re-start the Order.

    Just doesn?t make sense.

Also, we have to consider the Emperor, he felt any offspring of Anakin would be a threat to him in the OT. So why would he think that? That means having a high midi count is both directly genetic and randomly assigned. Strange.

I know this won?t be resolved in Ep. III but in the end it will not make complete sense.

Yeah, I think my main problem with it is that it kind of downplays the whole drama of Luke being the last remaining hope. It makes perfect sense that the Jedi's just kind of recruit whoever they find in the Republic with high Medichlorian counts and special abilities. But, after all the Jedi's get wiped out, why is Luke the only one who has the potential to use the force and save the galaxy? That was my big problem but I think I have the answer that satisfies me.

After the big wipeout in part 3 they can't really recruit anyone since both Yoda and Obi Wan go into hiding. It's not like they are interacting with people and they surely don't want to risk being caught by the Empire. Also, without teaching of the force, no one is really going to know what to do with it even if they have it in them. Luke didn't know he had it in him until he was 20 or so. Obi Wan remains a hermit until he comes across the son of Skywalker who will surely be strong with the force. I am satisfied now. Thanks guys.

I think the reason why Luke is the ONLY hope is that he's Vader's son. Not that he's necessarily Force sensitive, but because he has that little in there.

Random genetic mutation can also produce a child with high midi-chlorian counts.

"So, Padme becomes a Jedi in EIII?"

Despite that being a good idea that is not what I meant and you know that. I obviously meant that just because either the father or the mother is a Jedi that doesn't mean the child will be one. Leia and especially Luke are the exception to that rule as Anakin is very strong in the force. But I like making Padmé a Jedi - that would explain why Luke is so strong and needs "little" training.

I would like to ask one very basic question.

How many families out there can claim heritage to the Sun of Sons prophecy?

May I remind all here and sundry that Anakin Skywalker didn't have a Jedi Father or Mother, or indeed, if Shimi words are accurate, a father at all?

From a religious aspect, its clear that it is the Force, that chooses who to imbue with that extra level of Force Sensitiveness. The genetic aspect of it is probably overblown by unimaginative EU authors. While force sensitive "may" be passed on from generation to generation, Force sensitive is clearly not limited to an inherited state.

Remember, lumionous beings are we. Not this crude matter.

I always thought that the Jedi themselves don't reproduce but have sex without attachments. The way I interpret it is that people who are too old to enter the Jedi Order or people who are unaware of their potential have high midichlorian counts themselves and have offspring and give their children to the Jedi Order at three to six months old.

I believe that Jedi engaging in intercourse for the sole sake of procreating to replenish their numbers is quite shallow. I can't see the Jedi Council condoning such acts without any love involved.

Therefore, I have always been under the impression that the Jedi Order DOES NOT reproduce amongst its ranks; rather, potential Force-sensitive canidates are discovered randomly with an affinity in the Force. :-B

When this happens, Jedi Knights are dispatched to retrieve these babies, and (with the parents' permission) are brought back to the Jedi Temple to intiate their training into a life of service. :)

You don't need the parent's explicit permission. He's essentially browbeat into it. Remember that Darth Maul novel(IIRC, shadow hunter), in which the guy Maul is supposed to kill hates the Jedi because they took his child from him?

Also, holonet news archives also had a story taking place prior to AOTC where a parent is leading a protest against the abduction of her baby by the Jedi.

PainRack: Those are Expanded Universe examples. From what we've seen of the Jedi's benevolence in the actual films, they wouldn't do such a thing. Just like lust, it would seem like abducting children would be against the Code. :)
