He talked about this going back years ago as something that he would like to make, and said that he had some discussions with Lucasfilm about it, though at the time it seemed like it was never anything more than a stray idea that was sitting in the back of his head.

As it turns out, it was seemingly much more than than just an idea, with David Goyer (who wrote Guillermo del Toro's Blade II, as well as a ton of other movies I'm sure you're all familiar with) confirming that he had written a script and Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct, with concept art even being produced at Lucasfilm as it was gearing up before it was eventually canceled (presumably, it seems, around the time Solo bombed and made Lucasfilm pivot to Disney+ projects).

I did a little bit of digging to find this quote from Guillermo del Toro from a few years ago, regarding this project:

Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite contemporary filmmakers, and him getting projects snuffed out in early development like this definitely seems to be par for the course for him, unfortunately. I've been a bit burnt on Star Wars since The Rise of Skywalker, with my interest waxing and waning from project to project, and while I'm usually not thrilled about the idea of spinning off side characters into projects of their own, a space opera mafia movie centered around a big slug with Guillermo del Toro's fingerprints all over it is something I absolutely could have gotten behind.

Since this forum is for released films, and this piece of news is already being discussed in the rumors thread in Future Films, I don’t see a point to this thread remaining open.
