So, was there a reason why Escape From Dagu had to go?

When Escape From Dagu got cancelled, there were several theories why that happened. One was that the book was badly written and got cancelled because of that, another one was that there was a contradiction to Episode 3. As I tried to remain free of spoilers, I didn't ask what kind of contradiction.

Now, is there still anyone here who could elaborate on early script plans etc. that got Dagu cancelled? I hope it wasn't about Shaak Ti's plans for getting killed in the movie, as this would hardly contradict a CW book about her. Or was there nothing at all to back that theory, and it really was the writing that killed the book?

I heared that it was both because the writing sucked, and it moved the clone wars in a different direction then LFL wanted them to move (whatever that means). Plus after discouraging sales for shatterpoint, they were afraid that a books starring a minor character such as Shakk Ti would be bad for buisness. So they replaced it with Dark Rendevouze.

Well, from what Sue Rostoni has indicated, it was indeed at least partially due to the writing (though we still ended up with Ruins of Dantooine... ). Her comments were something to the effect of, "Well, if they'd cancelled Crystal Star, would you have terribly minded?" - pretty much indicating that the writing was bad, as that's the general fan opinion of the writing in CS: it sucked.

Actually, I don't think Sue Rostoni said that; someone else made the reference to The Crystal Star.

Ah, well, I could be wrong on the quote, but I was pretty sure it was one of the higher-ups who made a comment like that.

Bring it, you Waru worshippers you. I will smite you with my sapphire blade and feed your remains to the feeble creature you worship - oh, wait, no, I can't! He - wait, no, she, no, umm, IT? - it gone into the nether-universe from whence it came. So bite me!

Ouch! Get back you fiends! :p

IIRC it was Pablo that said it.

And yes. The quote is correct.

Yeah, Pablo did say it, but I don't trust much of anything he says.

If they cancelled Escape From Dagu due to the poor writing quality, then why oh why did they keep Jedi Trial?

I think the two primary factors were the "minor character effect" (thus Dark Rendezvous focusing on Yoda) and potential contradiction with ROTS (as that was around the time they got access to the film script, IIRC).

Does anyone know what the contradiction was?

Or rather, it would have been, if only I'd been able to remember what color Pors Tonith's teeth were.

I kinda find it hard to beleive it was due to the writing. I mean, the guy wrote the Dark Forces books and I thought those were pretty decent. I thought he could have done a lot given more freedom and this was his chance. o_O

And since it got mentioned, I didn't think Crystal Star was really all that bad. Keep in mind, it was the second book I eer read (found the HB for $5, brand new). And maybe you'll say the $5 should have tipped me off, but then, a normal paper back costs more, so...could have just been extra in stock...*shrug* I'll grant it wasn't the best one I read, but I have found memories of it.

As for poorly written books, if they can allow Ruins of Dantooine, or anything by Barbara Hambly, then you really can only move up from there, can't you?

Speculated quality issues aside . . . how keen are you about a planet of Rybet frogs fighting for freedom?

Be honest, and don't be Hutty about it.

We're lucky to have gotten Yoda: Dark Rendezvous instead of the frog warriors. I'd keep envisioning the Murlocs from Warcraft in my head as I read it, and as anyone who has had any experience with the Warcraft games at all could tell you, that is not a good thing.

It's Dietz writing, so it'd have still been cool. He did a great job with the DF stuff.

You know, when put that way, I can kinda see the light of reason. But does this mean that Excellence is putting down the book that was replaced by...Dark Redenvous? [face_thinking]

No.... he's putting down a book that let Dark Rendevous be released.

Despite DR easily being one of the best Clone Wars books out there.

Am I the only one who thinks Dietz is one of the worst writers ever to grace the EU?

As much as I liked the *story* of the Dark Forces novellas, and a chance to see Kyle and Jan in print, I thought the writing was stilted and unenjoyable, and that the game's cutscenes were actually better written and conveyed the story better.

And I quote "I will excute great vengence on them with wrathful punishments. Then they shall know that I am the Lord when I lay my vengence on them."

    *ribbit*

i think the real reason was that everyone was wondering what the heck is wrong with the cover, after they put the cover art up.
could it also be that they decided to give Shaak Ti over to the animated series instead? or would that be an effect of the book cancellation rather than a cause?

Err, can someone refresh to me the plot of Escape from Dagu, as it's been awhile...Wasn't it about Shaak Ti being held prisoner on the planet Dagu, and it covered how she escaped?

All mention of EfD has been removed from SW.com, but here's part of the synopsis:

The swamp planet Dagu, a remote place where the Confederacy has chosen to build a military base using prisoners of war, seethes with discontent. The slave laborers, including clone troopers, are determined to escape -- and the native reptilian Rybets have sworn to regain their freedom.

Count Dooku has learned that among the prisoners is a courier with information that could bring down the Republic. Dooku has selected Artel Darc, a most cunning and capable Dark Jedi, to apprehend the courier. But Artel Darc doesn't know that Shaak Ti, the legendary Jedi Master, is among the prisoners. Nor can he fathom how awesome a weapon the desire for liberty can be -- even against seemingly impossible odds.
