They're just trying to survive like any other creature. And they're native to Tatooine unlike, say, humans.

So why sadistically target them from your T-16 skyhopper? Does that make you feel like a man, Luke? Shooting at some animal that can't shoot back?

Jeez, your old man got hung up on a much older chic when he was 10 and never got over it and here you are torturing animals.

And you mouth kissed your own sister! You remember your sister, don't you Luke? She's the heartless bigot who refers to Wookies as walking carpets.

Man, you Skywalkers are one messed up family!

I'm willing to bet womp rats were a menace to the citizens of Tatooine. Perhaps they were venomous or very aggressive. If there were too many of them, I don't think it's unreasonable to take a few of 'em out.

Yeah, I think it was messed up that Luke killed Wamp rats for target practice. He could've hunted them for food instead of just killing them for no good reason. Living out in the wild, eating natural, organic foodstuffs, their meat may have been real tasty. Did the Sand People eat Wamp rats?

Maybe Uncle George had something against rats and that's why he put that in the script.

You know, because if we believe Luke can navigate a fast-moving flying machine through a canyon and hit small, innocent critters, then we have to believe it's plausible for him to fly the Death Star trench and hit a small exhaust port also.

In Jabba's Palace there are rats in the dungeons where Chewie and Han were held captive.
Are these baby Wamp rats? If so, then how much of a nuisance could they be if allowed to live in those dungeons? Did Jabba's employees raise Wamp rats for food and a few of them got loose?

Perhaps in the briefing room, before the Battle Of Yavin, Luke was just trying to brag about what a good shot he was by telling that other pilot that he use to "bullseye Wamp rats back home. They're not much bigger than three meters". He was probably trying to make a point, but didn't really kill Wamp rats.

    Isn't a 9 to 10-foot long rat basically a bear anyway?

It could've been a whole flock of Wamp rats what killed that Krayt dragon whose skeleton
C-3PO was near to on the Dune Sea.

    [face_thinking] :D

Luke probably did it to show how good a pilot he really was, because not everyone could actually hit a small target like a Womp Rat from a ship.

Not to derail this joke thread by being serious for a moment, but if womp rats are disease-carrying vermin whose very existence threatens the health and well-being of the residents of Tatooine, then Luke is fully justified in killing them for sport.

    Now back to the zaniness.

So what did Luke have against womp rats?

I'm willing to guess the womp rats said some derogatory remarks about "his moma".

Also, isn't killing/ torturing small defenseless animals the first sign of someone who needs some serious help?

Maybe, but then so is posting in a thread without reading the previous comments.

If there were large numbers of six-foot-long("I used to bulls-eye womp rats back home. They're not much bigger than two meters.") rodents near where I lived, you bet they'd be on the priority list of things to get rid of. :p

Then,um, whatever the Womp rats eat would become over-populated and whatever eats
Womp rats would become extinct. You can't upset the balance of nature over fear.

Sure, if there is a Womp rats in or near your house, then kill it, but going out to Beggar's Canyon
where there are no human settlements to target-practice on Womp rats is simply wrong.

I never saw Mos Espa, Lars' homestead, any Tusken Raider camps, Ben's humble abode, or Mos Eisley overrun with Womp rats.

If Womp rats were wiped out, then the Sand People would be more likely ro raid human settlements looking for food.

    Live and let live.

I really take issue with the arbitrary designation of some species as vermin and others as not - any animal can carry disease, household pets and other people included - but sadly it's a pretty universal human tendency to find specific animals to vilify.

I do think the implication of the movie, though, isn't that Luke's killing them because he thinks they're "vermin;" he kills them for sport. He is not Jedi-like in ANH.
