Some pronounciations

I spotted a pronounciation thread in Lit's sticky-class index , but it looked strange and pre-00 and I didn't want to chance it.

Out of pure morbid curiosity, how do you say Whiphid: Whiffid or Whip-hid?

I'd also like to know how do we know the SSD Executor is like Executeur, and not the Execution way. It's never pronounced in a movie, so what source says it's that way?

Chimera is another. I've heard three legit ways of saying it. Homeworld 2 called it Ky-meera. An Aust TV somebody called it Kee-meera. And a former professor I don't respect has called it Chy-merra.

Finally, what's the official way to say H'nthme, that lady alien from Mos Eisely Cantina. K'Kruk is "Ker Krook"? I won't ask how to formulate that Bith consular ship Skywalker was aboard in COPL.

There's only one way to pronounce it, really. An executor (one who executes, or performs, a task) is not the same as an executioner (one who executes . . . in a killing-type way).

Because the word "executor" doesn't mean "killer". It means "one who carries out something".

People confuse "Executor" with "Executioner"

 

It's the "one who implements" pronunciation. On top of the logic of it, they specifically pronounced it that way in a bunch of the games.

I've always pronounced Whiphid with a silent second "H", as "Wippid".

The thing about the Chimaera is that it's spelled differently from the real word. The official pronunciation of chimera is ky-meera, but that doesn't mean "Chimaera" is necessarily pronounced the same way. Myself, I keep the "ky" part, but pronounce the second part as "mare-a" in light of the added "A".

 

All right, all right! I know exactly what the Executor differences are; maybe I didn't convey that clearly. I apologise. I know it's said the "executeur" way. I was just wondering what first source said it to be; after all, it wasn't from a movie.

 

The only times I've ever heard it spoken aloud at all have been in games. They're not necessarily the most reliable method of judging things like this, but I don't think there are many others to choose from. It might be in the Radio Dramas somewhere.

 

I say Whiphid like Whip-hid. Chimeara like Chy-merra (that's how they say it in Mission Impossible 2).

I say it Vah-pud... but the double A's confuse me...

 

I say it as Far-Pad

I would think that Chimera (hard K, hard I, soft e and a) sounds a lot better, which means nothing other than that is how I choose to say it.

Also, Whiphid I would think should be 'Whifid'. I can't think of an instance where the 'ph' combination is pronounced as anything other than 'f'. The Whip-hid pronuncication would be spelled whipid, in my estimation.

Seems like feedback is split even way regarding Chimera and Whiphid. The latter was actually misspelt a few times in CW4, but so was Myrkr in Jedi Academy Trilogy. No big deal.

K'Kruhk= Kakruck

Personally I've always wondered about some of these:
Quinlan Vos (with a long o) or Vas (short o)?
Depa or Deepa Billaba?
Caamas?
AT-AT or Ay Tee Ay Tee?

 

According to NEGTC, Vos is with a short o (same sound as in hot) and Billaba's first name is Depa (e as in edge and a as in calm).

 

I say it Kuh-Kruck.
