A comma splice occurs (unfortunately, I see it all too often here) when two complete phrases, which could pass as sentences by themselves, are connected by a comma. That's a no-no. Instead, they must be connected with a semicolon.

I'm not an English major, but I'm required to know a thing or two about it since I'm a Spanish major.
