Does anyone know how to extract the sound effects from this game to a usable format?

I'd like to know how to do this as well. I've tried a conventional method(look for .wav and/or .mp3 files). No salt.

Anybody know if there's a trick to it?

You tried recording while in game? that's an option I did with Gungan Frontier. It was tedious but it worked well when the music was turned off.

I've pulled sounds from Jedi Academy before. KOTOR might be similar.

My own copy of KOTOR is for XBox, so I can't do anything with it (besides play the game :) )
Can either of you guys post a list of file names for the 5-10 largest files in the KOTOR directory tree?

    Have fun.

You need an extraction program like ConMan (Container Manager) that opens MANY kinds of files from games.

    For example:

The game Jedi Knight uses GOB files. Inside the GOB files are all sorts of game scripts, models, animations, and, you guessed it, WAV files.

But to get at them, you must EXTRACT them. So you need an EXTRACTION program to get at the WAVs u want :)

For Knights of the Old Republic, not owning it myself, I can't say what program and/or file you should be looking for, sorry :) But that's what u need to keep in mind while searching.

(HINT: Look for files with "Sound" or "FX" in their name...those are good clues :p)

Well, KOTOR is in no way similar to Jedi Knight. The sound effects are .wav files in a weird format. There isn't a way to change them, you could try to use Miles Sound Tools but that only works for the music. It isn't possible to get the sound files directly. Also, just to say it, you can't use the models, they are in a .mdl format made specifically for KOTOR and there isn't a converter for it.

    Here's the "decode" command:

    COPY *.WAV *.MP3

    :)~

I wish I knew, really. I want them too, there are a series of excellent sound that could be useful. If anyone does find out I'd like to know too.

    Oei...
Well, on LucasForums, Fred Tetra is making KotOR Tool, which lets you edit and extract all kinds of stuff (great guy), and I have the last version that was released, but LucasForums apparentely went down, so... any sounds in particular you needed? Or should I try just bundling them all and sending them to you or something?

The waves are actually mp3 in disguise. Just change the extension (or decompress using mp3 codec). Eitherway the sounds aren't that good anyway so why do you want to use them (unless you're going after the dialogues?)

    Done.

    Linky

You also need the latest Microsoft .NET Framework to use it... not sure where to get that, sorry.

But once in KotOR Tool, click on "BIFs", then "Sounds.bif", and you have everything listed out there for you.

    Hope this helps,
    Saju

The models are in .mdl format!!!
    Animation Master:
    www.Hash.com
uses the .mdl format!!! Hmmm.. I wonder if they would work in Animation Master...

.NET Framework can be found (at least for XP users and I suspect 98/ME/2000/NT users as well) at the Microsoft website and found by running Windows Update. SP 2 users will have to select Manual Install instead of Express, as it allows you to select files rather than simply downloading critical updates.

Hmmm, after listening to the KoTOR soundtrack in the game, I would actually appreciate never hearing it again. About as 'Un-Star Wars' as the noise that was the Episode II soundtrack.

BTW, the KoTOR Tool works just great! Thanks! A little irritating that you can only extract one sound at a time, but I can live with it.

I could record from my Xbox.

    YAY!

I got a capture card. I started by capturing all the radio stations from the game "Roadkill". I'll use it next for a machinima Halo Instructional Video, then I'll extract some KOTOr alien dialogue. I don't have the PC version, though, so lightsaber sounds may have to wait.

No, you can't open the .mdl models with Animation Master, it is a different format of .mdl made only for KOTOR by Bioware, you would have to program your own converter plugin.

Yeah, no one has figured out the model format even slightly... Keep in mind MDL is just an extension, the extension is used by tons of games, and they're all different formats.

    COPY *.WAV *.MP3

I'm missing some simple yet key thing here, how does one accomplish changing a file type?

    EDIT::

Nvm, folder options-----> click off hide extentions

however, while this does change the file type, it does not seem to make them playable.

    EDIT::

    geez....

It does work, but not for all of them.

It does work, but not for all of them.

    More or less than 50%?

    Edit:

Everything in the base folder: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR\streamwaves can be converted to .MP3s and played normally. I haven't tried the files in C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR\streamwaves\globe or the other sub-directories, but will do so in a bit.

Everything in C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR\streamsounds can not be converted.

Only the music works for me, streamwavs and sounds don't.
