Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I'm planning on recreating Drew Struzan's phantom menace poster, using as close to Drew's own methods as possible (with the exception of using a projector - I don't have a deadline on this so I want to draw it freehand) and I'm trying to locate the reference photos he used. I've found the Natalie Portman one, and I think I've found that the Liam Neeson portrait was a composite of a couple of photos, but I can not find the Jake Lloyd, Ewan McGregor, Jar Jar, droids, or Maul photos anywhere. Does anyone know where these stills might be found, or if they were actually drawn from movie screengrabs, and if so what scenes of the film they were in? I'd really like to approach this project as closely as possible to how Drew would have done it, so I don't want to use his drawing as reference unless I absolutely have to. Thanks
Some of the references are either from select stills from the film, costume tests or character photoshoots. I did a quick search through the Wookieepedia galleries, usually they have some of the promotional images there too. The Ewan pose was also used for this book cover. For a film moment, this would be the closest to that pose but not exactly the same one. For Jar Jar… closest thing I can find at the moment is during the Podracer hanger where Watto rolls the chance cube and the outcome turned in Qui-Gon's favour. Just the angle of the head is different but the expression is pretty close. A handy physical resource to have on hand is the Chronicles books. They go in-depth of the characters, costumes, models and so forth for each film. I'll keep an eye out for any matching ones and will let you know.
Thanks loads - I've now ordered that book from Amazon to get the best possible version. It's the Anakin pose that I think will prove the most difficult - I suspect that struzan has drawn Anakins head onto a pose held by someone else. Will have a rewatch of phantom menace to see what I can spot
