Spam and Popups: I don't get it

Okay so I've gotten to know and love spam and popups for six or seven years, but I'm beginning to think: why? I know it's to make money, but with all the hate for spam and popups, isn't it an inefficient waste? Who sits there and makes spam and popups? Is that someone's JOB? And how do they get everywhere? And why do people who write SPAM spell everything wrong?

I need answers, I say!

 

Now, I figure that in order to ask a question like this on the JCC, you must have no life.

Imagine that lack of life being devoted, now, not to asking questions about spam and popups, but to actually making spam and popups.

the thing about it is, for me at least, spam and popups have the exact opposite of their intended effect. telemarketing as well. invade my space and i will never, ever support your business.

Well, it's a job. I make a clean living.

 

Spam and popups are one of the mysteries of life that are not to be understood, so I really don't question it. I do get programs to block them though.

 

I don't get how advertisers make money from spam and pop-ups. Don't most people close those windows without clicking on the links?

I know one advertiser recently sued Google for ineffective advertising (ie. People who used Google didn't click on or buy from the advertisers who have space on Google, so the advertisers wanted their advertising money back from Google). Or something like that.

 

I especially enjoy the ones that actually prevent the site you want to access from loading up. Why would they want that on their sites?

Oh, I also really love the ones embedded on a site that don't allow the website to finish loading before their ad finishes.
