    Crisis at Starfleet Medical

    Chapter 1

    Starfleet
    Starfleet in San Francisco was a beehive of activity. It was always this way but now with the Enterprise being almost ready the visiting crewmembers of that ship were seen frequently.

    Captain Kirk had planned a meeting with his staff in one of the conference rooms and was busy getting thing ready when his chief engineer arrived muttering in his communicator about some technical details.

    “Ah told ya that the wee tube has to be placed there lad and not at that darned place,” Scotty turned his head “ah captain, reporting as ordered.”

    “We are going to meet the launch schedule?”

    “Aye sir,” Scotty replied and wanted to tell more when Lieutenant Ahart arrived with a big smile on her face. She – as head of the information and computer technology department began at once a lively discussion with him and helped him with the tube problem.

    More heads of departments arrived with Florian McLintlock beginning to share one of his new recipes. As chief of supplies he was responsible for the restaurants and he had been enlisted to the Enterprise by a superior with a strange sense of humour. McLintlock was an excellent cook but could be quite annoying and commanding when he gave his orders. He had been a drill sergeant at Starfleet academy. And with the Enterprise getting a large security department he had plans for exercises for not only that department but for all, captain and staff included.

    Only two chairs remained empty.

    Captain Kirk knew that McCoy was busy at Starfleet Medical. Now he wondered where his always very punctual first officer and communications officer were. He didn’t want to start the meeting without them.

    Starfleet Medical
    One of the departments of Starfleet was Starfleet Medical and it was conveniently located near the place leading to the central hall where shuttles – civilian or otherwise – could dock.

    With a big grin on his face McCoy sped to the desk in one of the large halls of Starfleet Medical where he had been busy with his chief Nurse Chapel and Lionel Majeski – one of his surgeons and anaesthesia specialist – to request supplies for the Enterprise medbay. “That will be Baldavin and Djarada arriving and I want to welcome them personally.”

    “I am sure he wants to see how Djarada is doing,” Lionel Majeski – blonde and big with now a twinkle in his blue eyes – shook his head when he was examining a sealed package with greens. “And these greens are only suited for…” What he wanted to say was unintelligible by the shouts of McCoy.

    “Yes? Arriving soon? That’s great. Thank you.”

    “Good news,” Christine mused when she saw McCoy storming away. And her attention was immediately focussed on what Majeski was now requesting. Greens, yes with Baldavin and Djarada being large humans and Majeski not a small one either the normal issued greens would be a bit uncomfortable.

    - - -

    Not far away from the desk where Chapel and Majeski were discussing greens was the office of one of the chief medical officers.

    “WOW order 66 and the Sith were ruling,” Admiral Silvo Panusconi pushed the off-button of his old-fashioned player. He – middle aged and good looking with only some grey hairs at the temples framing his black hair and smooth bronzed skin with dark brown eyes set beneath heavy brows – had again enjoyed the movies he had become very fond off when he was just a kid. He had seen McCoy and two of his assistants coming to Starfleet Medical to get supplies before staring the player. He knew why McCoy was here. The man was about to meet two new members for his team.

    Panusconi was hoping for a disturbance. It would be very convenient for him if McCoy was away when the shuttle arrived. He liked to meet the two from Aldebaran five first.

    Since completing his studies and getting a grade in major surgery he had toyed with the idea to enhance humans the way they did in his popular movies. The resources from the pharmaceutical company of his wife and her being friends with one of the staff members of Starfleet Medical had him becoming enlisted and rising through the ranks to become one of the heads. A push there and a nudge here and he had his laboratory to conduct his experiments and the influence to get personnel selected by him.

    But the death of Admiral Marcus and the Kahn-disaster had put a dent in his schedule. A dent called Morales. Admiral Morales had forwarded the advertisement to enlist transplant experts to McCoy and had given him first choice. He had seen the credentials of Djarada and Baldavin and wanted them.
    A blue flash passing his door had him leaving his office and headed to the main concourse.

    ~~~~~~~
    Chapter #2:
    Nyota had rushed to 'Fleet Headquarters from catching a transglobal shuttle. She had been visiting family for the past couple weeks and had caught the last-scheduled shuttle.
    She had also had a hasty breakfast, which was not her wont. she liked lingering over it.
    Her love met her at the entrance to the main concourse.
    They had missed one another during the time apart, but had commed daily.
    Their glances spoke of their pleasure at being together again.
    **
    Spock and Nyota headed toward the briefing rooms section off the main corridor.
    She was thinking of the new surgical and nursing staff McCoy was recruiting. She had gotten to know Marc Jullio and Jana John a bit already. They seemed likeable and competent. Christine, of course, she knew from before.
    "It is almost surreal." She was commenting. "We've been waiting for our momentous tour to start, and now it's just around the corner, figuratively speaking, of course."
    Spock gave her a look, teasing and affectionate. "Do you think the experience will match, or exceed, the anticipation?" He asked her in all seriousness.
    She smiled. "Are you kidding? The Captain will see to the professional part being a nonstop gasp of surprise." She winked. "On a personal level, whenever and wherever we are, you and I, it couldn't help but do so."
    They shared a long look.
    Nyota wanted nothing more than to slip into a secluded or out of the way spot. But there wasn't time, she decided regretfully.
    They sent a reciprocal "I love you" to one another across their connection and stepped into a turbolift.
    "I missed you." Nyota said softly and stopped the lift.
    They embraced tightly, something they couldn't do at the main entry in view of passersby.
    "Hmmm." She sighed in contentment, as they shared a kiss.
    A strident signal intruded.
    "Nyota," Spock said softly in her ear, "Someone is signaling the lift."
    "Oh." She sighed again, this time in resignation, and smiled teasingly as she set it in motion again.
    The doors whooshed open.
    **
    McCoy stepped in and gave them a knowing grin before a scowl reappeared, and the lift started up again, heading towards the briefing/conferences sector of rooms.
    "My surgeons are held up by some hardnosed, tight-assed paper-pusher." He grumbled. "I just hope it doesn't take a team of lawyers to untangle the knot."
    Nyota frowned in sympathy.
    "The last thing I need is having to cross sabers with some fool lawyer. I did that before, and don't feel inclined to do it again any time again this century. And don't you," he glared at Spock, who realized he was just venting and not really irritated at either he or Nyota, "quote a list of rules about procedures."
    "You would not listen, in any case." Spock rejoined.
    The Doctor harrumphed, but laughter lit his eyes, as Nyota laughed.
    They exited the 'lift and noticed a flashing sign near one of the main entryways that the Lady Luck would be docking any moment.
    McCoy smiled. "That's their transport. I hope they managed to squirrel their way aboard."
    Chapter 3
    Lady luck
    A luxury cabin on the Earth travel company cruiser ‘Lady luck’ en route from Procyon seven to earth was the place for some activity. That activity – in increasing frequency – had been taking place on more transports during the three months it had taken to travel from Aldebaran five to earth. Aldebaran five was an obscure planet hidden in a nebula and circling around a class M star. It was the home of the A’ar’ians, a race of long lived humans with the technology to explore the vicinity of their part of the galaxy. They had colonized more planets in the Al-Debaran starcluster and beyond. On their travels they had met the federation and had opted to stay independent. ‘We are staying in a starcluster that’s only sharing a name with that big star you have named Aldebaran,’ was one of the arguments of the delegation of A’ar’ians meeting the Federation. Another argument was that only the colonized planet Is’ikraanan had a spaceport receiving regular visits from Federation civilian liners.
    “Nineteen, twenty,” A soft grunt escaped from the young looking man doing push ups on the beige carpeted floor of the cabin. Sweaty black hair was hanging in dishevelled strands on his shoulders with some strands still tied together by a leather thong. A bare torso marred by a fifteen centimetre scar on the left side and muscled arms were glistening with sweat. The scar was obviously recent, showing the pink skin and marks of sutures.
    “It’s enough Ker. You are still recovering.” That came from an even younger man – same dark brown eyes and same dark hair but cropped short – who was sitting on one of the two bunks.
    “I know Jeran,” Ker Djarada rolled on his back and traced with his hand the scar. A smile was appearing on his face. Three months ago he was sitting at the desk of Jeran Baldavin, who was explaining the transplant procedure when a short message appeared. It was later revealed that it had on every terminal of transplant surgeons working on planets that supported the federation. He was chief nurse working in the Eb’an’daan university on Aldebaran five and like Jeran drawn to that message. Ker was the one to immediately initiate the contact with the Starfleet medic searching for members to join his team. McCoy was his name and he had been quite impressed when he saw the credentials of the two. Ker telling that he was going to donate a kidney was no trouble at all for the friendly McCoy who told him that medbay duty had you staying on the Enterprise. He grinned.
    “What’s the fun?”
    “I remembered our conversation with McCoy when I told him that I was going to donate my kidney very soon and asked about dangers and going on missions with away-teams and such,” Ker replied.
    “I am a doctor and not an explorer,” Jeran laughed. “Those were his exact words. We were the first to react and will be stationed on the Enterprise.”
    “And that gives me a feeling of security,” Ker quipped. “You know what happened on Earth. Starfleet medical escaped destruction by a narrow margin. With only patients coming to the medbay I don’t have to worry about my remaining kidney and...”
    ‘Arriving at orbital station seven. Passengers are…’
    “Time flies,” Jeran grinned. “Get dressed Ker. We have a shuttle to catch to meet with our new boss McCoy.”
    “Yeah and before that we have to avoid a certain lawyer working for a certain person,” Ker grumped.
    “Only if he is here,” Jeran grinned. “You know that by catching the Lady Luck on Procyon we could fool him and get him on a wild Bantha chase to get the mysterious and non existent transplant surgeon Jon Solo.”
    “But I have a bad feeling. Panusconi will have put flags out at Immigration. We will have to face that station with no doubt some eager to follow the rules servant. We have to argue until we can board a shuttle that will deposit us at Starfleet and can bump into the Dastardly Darth Admiral.”
    Starfleet Central
    “I am a doctor and not a lawyer. I have to come? Not your fault.” Leonard McCoy was grumpy when he shoved the com towards the assistant. It was not the usual grumpy when he had one of his famous arguments with Spock or Kirk. It was worse than that. Moments after hearing that the shuttle with Baldavin and Djarada was headed to Starfleet central he had to leave the turbolift he was riding with Spock and Uhura, had them following him for some unclear reasons and had to stop at another desk to receive a message from the lawyer of his ex wife that some real estate business had to be settled immediately. And he turned and stormed away to one of the turbolifts in Starfleet central to take one of the public transports and not minding the two followers in his path. “I had nothing but my bones after my divorce,” he scowled when he bumped into the front of the first officer and continued to grumble ‘that’s what I told the prissy following every rule to the last paragraph and point desk-hugger when I met him the first time and I will bore him again.”
    “Doctor,” Spock started to turn “a colourful description will not…”
    “He is… aw what. I have to change,” McCoy entered the turbolift that would take him to a locker room. And he heard the soft musical giggle from Uhura when the doors started to close.
    - - -
    Admiral Silvo Panusconi gave one of his creepy smiles when he saw the doctor disappearing in the turbolift. Now he had all the time in the world to meet the transplant experts. ‘I will make them an offer and they will take it and be mine.’
    Chapter 4
    Silvo Panusconi felt the soft vibration from a comlink and grabbed it. On it appeared a text only message. And that had him smiling. It was as he had expected. His associate had intervened posing as an officer at Immigration and had met the two from Aldebaran, had riled them about their business on earth and had – after getting some papers from the two – made an excuse to study the papers and had given a copy. The officer had after coming back to the desk discovered that the two had boarded a shuttle. They were now being followed.
    Panusconi knew which docking station was their point of entry. He was ready to receive the new additions to his team.
    ****
    Spock and Uhura were taking a leisurely stroll -hands clasped - and they lingered near a flowering bush. They had met the captain – it proved to be a short meeting after all with Kirk dismissing his staff after giving all orders on datapads – and had replied eagerly to the first order. ‘Get some R and R time.’
    The blossoms were a very soft rose in colour and fragrant.
    Nyota, on a whim, picked one and placed it behind her right ear.
    Her love gave her an amused glance.
    As they made their way back to the Central Plaza, they caught sight of McCoy, now in a more comfy outfit, hurrying to the shuttle area.
    "It would seem his long-awaited staff are finally here."
    "Yes." Nyota recalled the conversation earlier in the day. "McCoy has an intense aversion to attorneys, almost as visceral and reflexive as his antipathy to the transporter." Uhura observed, laughing.
    "Indeed." Her love responded. "After the completely unpleasant and hostile severance of his marriage, it is not much of a surprise."
    Uhura sighed, her dark eyes compassionate. "It's his daughter I feel sorriest for."
    They made their way to the shuttle area as well.
    "Natives of Aldebaran are quite striking." Nyota observed as they approached. "Running second only to Vulcans." She winked.
    Spock squeezed her hand for that compliment.
    ****
    Meanwhile, Baldavin and Djarada were speaking with McCoy and Spock could sense the discomfiture from the two.
    Djarada and Baldavin were strongly telepathic, which would doubtless come in handy while performing their work tasks.
    ****
    Jeran Baldavin paused in his recital of the frustrating events and caught sight of Uhura, and his eyes glinted, as he winked at Ker Djarada. "Very attractive. Are all your colleagues so lovely, Doctor?"
    McCoy grinned. "She's not available, Baldavin. She was as the old sayin' goes 'spoken for' before ever our crew roster was finalized. Why, our good Captain even had a go at her, and that effort landed with a dull thud."
    Baldavin smiled good-naturedly. He was about to ask who the lucky gentleman was when he caught his own telepathic resonance.
    A soul-bond, he noted with pleasure. Those were rare, and blessed things whenever they were fortuitously established.
    “Before we continue I have to catch the silver line bus,” McCoy turned serious when he saw a signal that one was arriving. He hurried away.
    “We can wait,” Jeran began when he felt the soft nudge from Ker.
    Chapter 5
    “D’ani’awvwa. Admiral Panusconi,” Ker Djarada whispered softly in his native language when he recognised one of the persons standing near the exit. He had seen the admiral almost a year ago on the holotube shaking hands with Admiral Marcus. During the entire trip to Earth he had been practising the common language spoken by members of the Federation but this had him reverting immediately to the a’ar’ian language.
    “Wai. Ab’a’na McCoy. Mana uman nai a’ar’ian awai,” Jeran replied with an equally soft voice. Inwardly he was becoming quite agitated. ‘McCoy was gone and the man standing there with a face showing some satisfaction was not at all to his liking. Was this a plot by Panusconi to get them after all the trouble they had been avoiding his croonies? A meeting during a brief stop at Leonis three before boarding the next public transport had him with the knowledge that Starfleet wanted more transplant surgeons. The woman from Leonis three had told him that she was going to Earth to enter the service of Starfleet. Her contact was Silvo Panusconi. But Jeran showing her a recording of the Marcus disaster and certain admirals involved in it had her swayed. She was going to stay on Leonis three. On Procyon they had met a lawyer obviously sent by the admiral. They had been able to escape him by boarding the Lady Luck and give the lawyer something else to chase. The officer at Immigration had been quite difficult and getting copies from driver licenses back made no sense at all. He was going to the Enterprise and had no intention of going on planetary trips.
    Ker had come with more disturbing news after analyzing the entire Marcus disaster during their trip on the ‘Lady luck’ and had voiced it ‘I am glad we are becoming part of McCoy’s team. I don’t want to be a part of the team developing clones and cyborgs.’ He understood what Jeran wanted. It was becoming clear that the Admiral had been unsuccessful at recruiting transplant experts the way he was looking their way and had been informed about their arrival. If Panusconi asks about our race, just tell him that we are ordinary humans with a normal lifespan and no telepathic abilities. Keep your shields up. We didn’t give that lawyer any information about our race too.
    Ker had his shields up after seeing two familiar faces. “Ulcan’ar Spock a uman Uhura.”
    “Wa ata-aan,” Jeran whispered when he picked up his and Ker’s bag and headed to the exit. This was going to be interesting. Just before raising his shields he had felt the nudge from Spock becoming very interested in what the admiral wanted. He knew that Spock and Uhura were assigned to the Enterprise. And he gave his most pleasant smile – shields up – when he greeted the impeccably dressed and handsome looking man “Admiral uh…”
    “Panusconi,” the Admiral shook hands with Ker and Jeran.
    “Jeran Baldavin. We are assigned to the Enterprise. We were with doctor McCoy and he had to go for some urgent business and…”
    “I saw McCoy hurrying away,” Admiral Panusconi stated. “We can wait here for him but…”
    “A good idea,” Jeran put down the two bags. He didn’t know how long McCoy would be gone. He could be getting something quite mundane like a package from the post office. Or maybe he had left his uniform at home and wanted to meet his new crewmembers more formally dressed.
    “Aw well we wait here but I am sure you will want to follow me to my office after I can explain why I am delighted to see two experts in transplants arriving here. I have a great and interesting offer that sure can sway you to work in my team. You see I am working with the top specialists in a state of the art laboratory for the benefits of humankind.”
    “We wait here for McCoy,” Ker sighed and reached for his left side and sat down on his bag. “Sorry but you see I am still recovering.”
    “I will get you a hoverchair,” Jeran was about to head to a place where he had spotted the things when he felt the hand of Panusconi on his arm. “Sir, I am his surgeon and responsible for his health. Let me go.” And he nudged with his other hand and was headed – not in a hurry at all because he knew that Ker was acting a bit more fatigued than he really was – to the hoverchairs. There was something brewing and he had to stall. And he saw Spock and his lovely companion looking his way. Spock was the lucky gentleman. All the more reasons for not going with Panusconi and keeping his assignment on the Enterprise.
    Chapter#6
    Uhura frowned as she glanced at the huddle of Baldavin, Djarada, and an Admiral; the former two definitely were giving off nonverbal signals of not wanting to be in this particular conversation. That sleemo who was talking so animatedly to Djarada and Baldavin ... he looked like he was up to no good.
    She and her love made their way back to their suite.
    She requested a cool drink and relaxed on the long thickly cushioned sofa.
    Spock seemed preoccupied, and she asked him the cause.
    "It is Admiral Panusconi. He is impeding the smooth acquisition of the Doctor's new staff."
    "How do you know?"
    "As soon as the Doctor left, he cornered them." Spock could think of no more apt word.
    Uhura frowned. "I've heard about his cloning and cyborg projects. It's barely on the fringe of respectable."
    "And Baldavin and Djarada would suit his ends quite nicely."
    Uhura gasped.
    "We have to alert McCoy." She picked up her personal communicator.
    **
    McCoy answered the page with a grumble. "Jocelyn took everything ... even my prized figurines."
    Uhura teased: "Are you sure they weren't voodoo heads to put the whammy on you, Doctor?"
    He laughed. "No, Uhura. Even she wouldn't stoop that low, but it comes close."
    Uhura laughed. "Well, at least I know it's not part of a scheme to get you alone behind locked doors." She was referencing a fun short story featuring Luke and Mara, before they became formally joined in wedlock, or even officially a couple.
    Uhura swiftly summarized the dire situation.
    "You'll have to take the transporter back over." She warned.
    McCoy came to a quick decision. Time of was of the essence if he was to extricate Baldavin and Djararada.
    McCoy sighed. "I guess I'll have to use that atom scrambler. One of these days it'll put me back together and I'll look like a Gungan."
    Better than a Bothan, Uhura mused.
    Uhura laughed, as Spock raised both brows.
    "Indeed, Doctor?" Spock answered. "It is a little more reliable than the TARDIS.
    McCoy laughed. "Barely."
    They signed off as Spock's eyes glinted with inner mirth.
    This faded quickly as there was the sound of the crying of a child in the near distance.
    Chapter 7
    Starfleet Central
    Ker Djarada had observed his friend Jeran selecting a hoverchair after trying first the ones parked in front. He turned rather awkward and acting the recovering patient when he heard an opening turbolift at the far end of the public concourse where the entrance to the ER-rooms of Starfleet Medical was. This was the something that was brewing. Dropping his shields for a moment he ‘felt’ the anguish from a being and gave a soft gasp. And that had the admiral reaching to him.
    “Let me help,” Admiral Panusconi offered, indicating a door next to where Jeran was busy with the hoverchair. “I can guide you to my offic…”
    “We are needed there,” Jeran sped now with the hoverchair to his friend. He grabbed Ker by his shoulders, felt Ker helping him and showing no fatigue at all and settled him in the hoverchair.
    And without paying any attention to the ‘helpful’ admiral or the bags Ker took the controls of the hoverchair and sped with Jeran hurrying after him to the entrance of the emergency rooms where a man was trying to soothe his crying son. Putting his shields down for a few seconds he sensed that something was very wrong with the child.
    "Who is that?" Uhura was asking, as they ended their conversation with McCoy.
    It was at this moment that Christine appeared. "Admiral Morales rushed in with his son."
    Uhura swiftly concluded: "That must be the child we heard crying."
    Christine's eyes filled with compassion. "He's such a cutie, too, Rinin. And his father is not your typical paper-pusher."
    Uhura opened up the line to McCoy again and brought him up to speed on the situation.
    "We will have you sent to where Morales is, immediately, in lieu of to Panusconi's office." Spock told him.
    McCoy grumbled. "Blast. Well, there's nothing for it, I suppose, necessary haste."
    “My son, Rinin, help him.”
    Jeran – running after Ker in the hoverchair and with Panusconi following him – arrived to see a man – wearing the same uniform as Panusconi and showing the same rank – keeping a crying child to his chest. The child could be no more than four years and was covered with big ugly bruises. He decided to be very direct when he recognised the symptoms and said with a soothing voice “I am a doctor and can help you. Can you tell me what happened?”
    “I am Alonzo Morales and a doctor myself but this…” The man stopped for a moment before continuing in a soft tearful voice. “I am a psychiatrist. I don’t know that much about what’s ailing him. Yesterday Rinin was playing with his friends and being a bit more tired than usual I put him in his bed after telling him a bedtime story. Julia – uh my wife – came to his room this morning and uh I was already away to my work and uh she contacted me when she couldn’t comfort him. I rushed home and saw these bruises and brought him here. Starfleet Medical will know what’s wrong I hope.”
    “I know what’s wrong and will do all in my powers to save him,” Jeran soothed. “I have to run some tests and…”
    “Starfleet Medical has the resources,” Admiral Panusconi stated. This emergency would give him opportunities to see Djarada and Baldavin at work and enlist them in his program. His laboratory had all the resources and could handle this emergency too. “This way Alonzo,” he reached to the shoulder of his colleague. “We will have your son back home in no time after curing what’s ailing him.” And he started to steer the man and his son towards a turbolift when a transporter beam coalesced into the form of a man clad in a brown jacket and mismatching dark blue trousers. A large lumpy bag was resting between his feet.
    “Dratted atom scrambler. Yeah what’s the matter?” The man observed the crying child and the adults, recognised the two crewmembers he had met earlier. “Ah before I can guide you to your new home you have your first emergency.”
    “McCoy? I want to conduct tests as soon as possible. Starfleet Medical sure will have the isolation wards I will need to treat Rinin Morales.” Jeran saw the father getting a startled look on his sad face. “Alonzo, I am almost sure what’s ailing your son and during his recovery he will need to be isolated. But you will be able to stay with him and visit him with your wife.”
    “I know the way to the isolation ward and will guide you,” McCoy grabbed his bag and dropped it without ceremony in Ker’s lap, flipped open his communicator, held it close to his ear and began to head towards the hall where he had been with Christine and Lionel. He was smirking. Uhura was resourceful and didn't have to be asked to outfox a wily fox.
    “Uh Admiral Panusconi, get our bags to the isolation ward. I have supplies packed and will need them as soon as possible,” Jeran didn’t wait for a reply and began pushing the hoverchair to follow McCoy.
    Ker had to hold the bag from Mc-Coy and was unable to use the controls of the hoverchair.
    “That’s an order Panusconi,” Morales and his son followed the three medics.
    Panusconi stomped back. He had access to the isolation ward but would have liked to make his offer now. Waiting was something he hated.
    Ker began to smile. He heard the very soft commands issued through the communicator. Someone was helping them to get to a place that was not intended by Panusconi but the best for the child.
    Some great medical maneuvers to place Panusconi with the bags so to speak.
    Chapter #8
    Uhura was providing directions.
    "I don't know where these isolation wards are supposed to be." McCoy grumbled. "I don't work here, never have. Took classes here, more years ago than I care to mention."
    She answered softly: "A schematic and entry codes are necessary and only authorized personnel can get in." Her voice lowered further. "Admiral Morales's codes are accessible, which is the most convenient because he is on staff and it's for his own son, so any trail of clues leading back to him wouldn't be suspicious."
    McCoy frowned. "Hold up, Lieutenant. How'd you ever get Morales to ..."
    Uhura's voice became conspiratorial and frankly full of laughter. "Well, as to that, Doctor, we didn't exactly ask. Spock actually sliced into the computer systems and ..."
    A glow filled McCoy's eyes. "Hacked, you mean."
    Uhura's laughter became overt. "He (and I) like to call it slicing."
    McCoy stifled a laugh of his own. "You're a pirate, my girl." He said admiringly.
    She laughed. "Spock told me to tell you this is all highly irregular, but since it is for a good cause..."
    McCoy rolled his eyes and said: "I can just hear him say so."
    As they'd been speaking, Uhura interspersed their banter with directions and finally told him the entry codes. He beckoned to Baldavin, Djarada, and Morales, with a broad wink and nod.
    They disappeared behind the sealed doors, leaving a flustered and frustrated Panusconi in the proverbial dust.
    As the last sight of Panusconi vanished behind them, McCoy thanked his colleagues on the other end of the 'line' and added: "Morales is more grateful than I can put into words."
    "I can imagine." Was the soft and warm response. "You're welcome."
    **
    Uhura put away her communicator and gave a soft whoop. "We did it!"
    Spock raised a brow at her.
    "Helped Admiral Morales and his son first of all and secondly thwarted Panusconi's underhanded schemes." She elaborated.
    He remained silent but merely leaned against the carroll where the computer rested and favored her with a most inscrutable look.
    "Okay, you can act like it's of no account, but you're not fooling me for a second." She smirked.
    He finally relented and let his own mischief shine across to her as he reached to pull her close.
    "You ..." She breathed, before he kissed her, sliding one of his hands under her blouse to stroke her waist and back.
    "Oh!" Nyota now exclaimed with a different sort of pleasure.
    "Ashal-veh," He murmured, "Perhaps we should leave this area before we are noticed."
    Nyota agreed fully with that suggestion, for an even more urgent reason; she wanted they two to be alone and in private.
    Great work by Uhuru and Spock to slice and dice Panusconi to shreds.
