Would anybody know how to create a good Star Trek phaser effect in AE 6.5? I've tried using the 'Beam' filter but it doesn't generate good results.

i don't have any star trek stuff here....but i've googled some images...

you're talking about the hand-held phaser right? like this:

    [image=http://nicksagan.blogs.com/nick_sagan_online/images/star_trek_relativity0d118f.jpg]

What about mask --> mask feather --> duplicate/blur appropriately --> adjustment layer w/ fractal noise over it to break up the stream. I dunno how this would look...but was the first thing to enter my head when looking at the above image.

Then take a still frame from a contact flare and track it to where the person's getting hit. This, along with madhorizon's suggestion should get you close to something like that image.

Just don't let loose that I volunteered help to a Trekkie cause.

    I feel cold.

I'm not a Trekkie, but I am making Star Trek vs. Star Wars movie in which the Enterprise get schooled by 4 Y-Wings and one Blockade Runner.

I was talking more about ship lasers, but the same method will work.

Just like star wars characters to gank in groups, probably because their ships are all controlled by little kids.

Plus the creators of the shows favor star wars more obviously, they're totally over powered

    Nerf Star Wars.

I love Star Trek... No matter how cheesy people say it is.

I recommend trying some sort of moving "cloud" filter image in photoshop that is either screened or burned into the basic laser effect in AE.
That will add the "texture" of the phaser beam.

I have developed a pretty good method for creating phaser beams in AE. If you can wait a day or two, I might try to write a mini tutorial for you.

Is this about what your looking for? I spent about 5 minutes monkeying around with AE so it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. If you like it I'll refine it and write a tutorial for you.

Beam on the left is original, beam on the right is mine

You should try adding a little noise to that. But it looks pretty good.

I messed mine up and was too lazy to go back and change it. I'll give it another shot when I have After Effects available...this was done on Photoshop 7:

Looks good, but it's coming out of a transporter emitter, and not out of a phaser bank. [face_mischief]
