Hello. I am presently in the process of writing a report whose subject is the architecture in all the Star Wars movies (EP1 to EP6).
I need all the information I can gather on the subject so please do not hesitate and tell me everything you know about the architecture in Star Wars.

(Web links and book titles are welcome)

    Thank you.

I have to start now (it's for my Master's degree in Art History which has to be completed by summer 2005). Any good tips for the architecture of Ep1-2-4-5-6?

I suggest the Art of Star Wars books for each movie. I'm not sure if the books from the OT movies are still in print, though. Also, The Visual Dictionary books for the OT, TPM and AOTC published by Dorling Kindersley.

Yeah. I like his theories about sounds and colors. Cool guy! He created what a lot of historians consider to be one of the first abstract paintings (can't remember the title sorry). Also, Kandinsky was an important member of the Bauhaus school of art...amazing school, wish I had been able to attend it!

    Bauhaus...now, that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time. [face_laugh]

I was Bauhaused to death in design school. They made a big deal about emulating the Bauhaus teaching philosophy--training in several art and design disciplines besides the one you're interested in. But, like college will do, I got taught a lot of theory and not all that much in the way of practical skills.

Sorry to hear that. The funny thing is I first got into Bauhaus because of the band called Bauhaus...great band!

Meh, no biggie. Instead of coming out as an architect, I came out as a writer. Heh, go figure. :D

I think I remember Bauhaus the band. It kind of mushes together with all of the 80's eurotechno people always played in the studios at school. [face_laugh]

    That is funny....so did I.

Did you get my link when you posted this in the JC community? It was to an article about the influence (maybe) for the Jedi Archives.

Check out The Visual Dictionaries for sure, as well as the Scrapbooks by Ryder Windham (although VERY cut and dry). Try to see some of the techniques and architecture in the Essential Guides.

Incredible Cross-Sections is a very good set that details MUCH on the spacecraft and vehicles of the Star Wars universe.

This is quite possibly the most informational search site on Star Wars, and so it is most certain that you'll find at least SOMETHING helpful.

Good luck on the report! :)

Any ideas on the architecture of EP3?
    Things I've heard so far:

-Tzcheck (sp?) Republic castles have been visited by LFL people...

    -Alderaan...?

    -Mon Calamari?

The Art of Star Wars books are definitely still in print for the OT. Most of the OT architectural designs were concepted by Ralph McQuarrie, I'm not sure if there is any books of his work besides Star Wars. I would look up Ralph McQuarrie on the net. (He died awhile ago.) Ryan Church and Marc Gabbana did alot of the architectural conceptual work for the PT. Gabbana, as well as Doug Chiang actually graduated from the school I go to, CCS in Detroit. I also like Kandinsky's work. He was part of the Blue Riders wasn't he? I just saw one on his works at a museum in Vegas last weekend...amazing stuff.

Like Naccha, I'd definately recommend the Art Of Star Wars books by Ralph MacQuarrie. For the newer stuff, I think there's still Art Of..... books but they'll be credited to Doug Chiang or one of the other main artists on Ep 1 and 2.

I'd also suggest gettting your hands on DVD copies of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and watching them through with the design/pre-production team commentary turned on. That will cover lots of stuff anf there's a million short doco's about the design process as well. I clearly remember Doug Chiang going into detail about the Art Nouveu (sp?) elements in the Gungan civilisation and in some sections of Coruscant, the Roman/Classic influences in the Naboo etc. on The Phantom Menace DVD.

    :)
