Hey everyone, I'm a freshman in college and I'm doing an informative paper titled "The Effects of Star Wars on Movie Technology". I'm wondering if anybody knows of any websites/books/articles/etc. dealing with the groundbreaking special effects in the original Star Wars movies and their effect forever on the way special effects are used in movies. Any help would be useful. Thanks a lot!

Don't know of any offhand, but I'd Google it. Actually, TFN probably has some good material buried somewhere.

You also may want to check out some of the past issues of Insider. I'm also in my first year of college, and I just finished my own personal narrative about SW!

If you want to read it to maybe get some sort of idea on how to set it up or something Here's the link

    It's like the 15th or 16th post

    Good luck! :)

Wait until tomorrow, buy the DVD's, pop in the bonus 4th disc and listen to famous directors talk about how they have benifited from LFL technology.

OK, I've changed my topic to "The Effects of Star Wars on Movies". I need 3 main points. One is going to be the science fiction genre, one is going to be special effects in movies, and I need a third.

I would do that, but I'm concentrating on how Star Wars changed movies. I couldn't find enough on just special effects, so that is just going to be one aspect of my speech. And yes I already watched the "The Force Is With Them" documentary on the DVD's.

you could also do the impact on pop culture, that is a real big one.

like who doesn't know who darth vader is or how princess leia wears her hair? and what about the star wars refences in films?

I suggest the book "Empire Building" but I'm not sure if it's highly reccomended on here.

I could do that, there's got to be a ton of movies with Star Wars references. Anyone have a list of them?

There is SO much stuff out there about the effects of SW.You shouldn't have any problem finding something useful at the library and with google.

I will say, don't forget that George's ILM raised the bar so high that they became the standard to the point that, until recently, they worked on almost every big fx film...same with sound(THX).....also the way George has pioneered the switch from film to digital.

As far as the genre...I believe it was the first, well, the first notably influential one to incorporate the "used Universe" look as opposed to having everything impossibly slick and shiny...now that approach is used all of the time...also,in the era of Women's Lib and the ERA,paved the way for having strong, dominant, realistic, and still very feminine Female characters.

Culturally...that should be an essay in itself! You must be too young to remember the fact that with Jaws/Star Wars/Close Encounters...they virtually created the Hollywood that we know today, with "Summer Blockbusters".Before that,a Sci-fi film was lucky to make 10 million profit....now,just about every single blockbuster is an fx-laden fantasy.

That's good stuff AniKaufman, thanks for the ideas. I hadn't thought of the Princess Leia/female empowerment idea, I'll definetely use that.
